Individual case photogrammetric calibration of the Hirschberg Ratio (HR) for corneal light reflection test strabometry.

PURPOSE: The HR (prism diopters [PD] per mm of corneal light reflection test [CLRT] asymmetry for strabometry) varies in humans from 14 to 24 PD/mm, but is totally unpredictable. Photo(grammetric) HR calibration in (of) each case facilitates acceptable strabometry precision and accuracy. METHOD: Take 3 flash photos of the patient with both the preferred eye and then the deviating eye fixating straight ahead and then again with the deviation eye fixing at (+/-5-10 PD) the strabismic angle on a metric rule (stick) one meter away from the camera lens (where 1 cm = 1 PD). RESULTS: On these 3 pho

Coherent motion pops out during smooth pursuit.

Stimulus motion is a prominent feature that is used by the visual system to segment figure from ground and perceptually bind widely separated objects. Pursuit eye movements can be influenced by such perceptual grouping processes. We have examined the subjects' ability to detect small amounts of coherent motion in random dot kinematograms during pursuit. We compared performance on tests of coherent motion perception while subjects fixated a stationary spot or while they tracked a moving target. The results indicate that smooth pursuit can improve subjects' ability to detect the presence of cohe

Attending to objects: costs or benefits?

The single-object advantage is said to occur when performance is faster and/or more accurate when the two targets to be compared appear on one object than when they appear on two different objects. The single-object advantage has been interpreted to suggest that attention can select objects rather than unparsed regions of visual space. In five experiments we explored whether directing attention to one object rather than two objects produces a benefit or a minor cost. Participants were required to compare two target features that belonged to one object, to two objects, or did not belong to any

Effect of visual surrounding motion on body sway in a three-dimensional environment.

Unidirectional motion of a uniplanar background induces a codirectional postural sway. It has been shown recently that fixation of a stationary foreground object induces a sway response in the opposite direction (Bronstein & Buckwell, 1997) when the background moves transiently. The present study investigated factors determining this contradirectional postural response. In the experiments presented, center of foot pressure and head displacements were recorded from normal subjects. The subjects faced a visual background of 2 x 3 m, at a distance of 1.5 m, which could be moved parallel to the in

Accuracy of target detection in new-object and old-object displays.

In 4 experiments, the authors investigated accuracy of detecting a target among nontargets. In some experiments, the target was a second-order square of stationary lines on a background of downward-moving lines, and nontargets were second-order squares of upward-moving lines. In other experiments, target and nontarget squares and background were shades of gray. The principal comparison was between "new" and "old" object displays. In new-object displays, search items appeared abruptly and one might be a target. In old-object displays, search items appeared abruptly, and after a delay one might

Recovery of visual field function in the optic neuritis treatment trial.

PURPOSE: To assess the pattern of recovery of the visual field of patients with optic neuritis and to determine whether all affected portions of the visual field recover similarly or certain portions of the visual field have greater recovery. METHODS: We reviewed the Humphrey Visual Field (Allergan-Humphrey Inc, San Leandro, California) data from the initial and 6-month examination for the involved and fellow eyes of patients enrolled in the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial (ONTT). The average threshold for each patient was calculated for the entire tested field and for locations within concent

[The development of occlusion amblyopia following atropine therapy for strabismic amblyopia].

For the treatment of strabismic amblyopia the authors have used atropine in the sound eye under usual optical correction as soon as central fixation of the amblyopic eye is secured by means of proceeding occlusion therapy. Although there may be little effect of occlusion in atropine therapy, six children under five years of age developed amblyopia in their sound eyes. In every case, the first sign of developing amblyopia was the decrease of fixation ability in the sound eye in a binocular fixation test prior to the reduction of visual acuity. On the other hand, fixation ability of the original

Attention and eye movement related activation of neurons in the dorsal prelunate gyrus (area DP).

Neurons in area DP, the dorsomedial portion of the prelunate gyrus of awake monkeys (Macaca mulatta and Macaca sylvana), responded only little if at all to stationary or moving light stimuli. Circumscribed receptive fields could not be determined in the majority of cells. About 25% of the units became active at a certain gaze position, mostly ipsilateral to the recording site, and with a latency of 70-150 ms after the eye had attained this position with a saccade. About 70% of neurons were activated vigorously when the monkey looked attentively at an object, such as a face, a glove, a hand or

Effect of monocular visual loss upon stability of gaze.

Using the eye-coil/magnetic field method, we measured horizontal and vertical movements of both eyes in four patients with monocular loss of vision while they attempted steady, binocular fixation of a visual target. We also measured gaze stability in two normal subjects while they fixed upon a target monocularly, and in one patient with congenital, bilateral blindness. In the patients with monocular visual loss, gaze instability was greater in the blind eye, both vertically and horizontally, compared either with their seeing eye or with nonviewing eyes of control subjects. Gaze instability due

Effect of reading in low illumination on fixation disparity.

Fixation disparity has been shown to be produced by prism stress, and it has therefore been proposed that its presence constitutes a sign that binocular vision is under stress (decompensated heterophoria). Fixation disparity can be present in the absence of any other indication of stress, and therefore may have a physiological basis. This study investigates the effect on fixation disparity and visual discomfort of placing the visual system under a different type of stress, that of requiring the subject to read under conditions of inadequate illumination. In 50 young adults, it was found that f

Millimetric cover test--a linear strabismometric technique.

In ten normal subjects we measured the angular rotations of the globe, both in adduction and in abduction, corresponding to limbus shifts from 1 to 7 mm. Our study demonstrated that to each millimeter of temporal limbus shift corresponds an average adduction of about 4.6 degrees and to each millimeter of nasal limbus shift an average abduction of about 4.8 degrees. These experimental results give a sound foundation to the clinical evaluation of the strabismic angle by measuring, with a millimeter ruler, the limbus shift of the nonfixating eye by assuming fixation. This technique appears partic

C-arm assisted zygoma fracture repair: a critical analysis of the first 20 cases.

PURPOSE: Currently used open reduction and internal fixation techniques of zygoma fracture repair are not optimal. Surgical exposure of those sites needed to allow for accurate reduction and for rigid fixation has a high possibility of negative consequences. The objective of the present study was to present a single-incision, single-fixation site zygoma fracture repair technique using a single zygoma c-arm view to quantitatively determine its accuracy, complication rate, and practical aspects in a clinical series. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a prospective study, consecutive patients with isolat

Blinks are strategically coupled with head movements in unconstrained natural gaze behavior.

Blinks are a ubiquitous yet largely unnoticed aspect of human vision, despite causing frequent interruptions of visual input that can amount to up to 10% of waking time. By leveraging a large dataset of unconstrained gaze behavior during two natural tasks, we found a behavioral strategy to limit the impact of blinks: blinks were strategically coupled with head movements, which minimizes information loss due to unreliable visual input during head movements. Specifically, blink probability increased with higher head velocities and showed strong temporal modulation relative to head movement onset

Changes in Foveal Fixation Axis Position Between Seated and Supine Postures and Their Potential Applications in Refractive Surgery.

The correct centration of the ablation in laser refractive surgery is an unresolved classic challenge. This is usually performed at the pupillary center or corneal vertex, but ideally should be done with the point through which the patient's eye truly aligns when looking. Aligning the ablation with this axis is believed to yield the most accurate and effective refractive outcomes. This study proposes the use of a new device designed to center ophthalmic lenses, specifically progressive addition lenses, with the foveal fixation axis (FFA). This device showed an acceptable repeatability and user

When, where, and for how long: What drives gaze behavior during goal-directed motor action?

Vision typically plays a vital role in our ability to navigate through a cluttered world, negotiate varying terrain, and interact with objects and other individuals. Our understanding of what determines how people decide where, when, and for how long to direct gaze to guide their motor behaviors continues to evolve. This narrative review first summarizes the behavioral evidence for a core assumption about these decisions: gaze behavior serves to reduce task-relevant uncertainty of environmental features and the decision landscape. Next, it expands on this simplistic viewpoint by capitalizing o
