Prevalence, risk factors, and genetic diversity of Bartonella henselae infections in pet cats in four regions of the United States.

Blood was collected from a convenience sample of 271 pet cats aged 3 months to 2 years (mean age, 8 months, median and mode, 6 months) between May 1997 and September 1998 in four areas of the United States (southern California, Florida, metropolitan Chicago, and metropolitan Washington, D.C.). Sixty-five (24%) cats had Bartonella henselae bacteremia, and 138 (51%) cats were seropositive for B. henselae. Regional prevalences for bacteremia and seropositivity were highest in Florida (33% and 67%, respectively) and California (28% and 62%, respectively) and lowest in the Washington, D.C. (12% and

Testing the "niche centroid hypothesis" in flea-mammal networks from the palearctic: species' centrality across their environmental niches.

A species' centrality in a network is expected to decrease with distance from the centroid of its environmental niche. We investigated the variation of a species' centrality in flea-mammal networks across the space of its niche for 30 flea and 21 small mammal species occurring in 10-46 networks from different localities in the Palearctic. We characterized the environmental niche of a flea or a host species using the ellipsoid envelope model, based on a species' occurrence points and climatic, soil, and vegetation data. We found significant relationships between centrality in a network and the

Geographic patterns of functional and phylogenetic niche breadth in Holarctic fleas (Siphonaptera).

We studied geographic patterns of functional and phylogenetic niche breadth of 194 flea species. Niche breadth was measured as the functional and phylogenetic diversity and uniqueness of the assemblages of small mammal hosts exploited by these fleas. We asked (a) whether the relationships between niche breadth and geographic range size conform to the 'niche breadth hypothesis', predicting positive correlations, and (b) whether variation of niche breadth along the latitudinal position of geographic range conforms to the 'niche breadth-latitude hypothesis', predicting narrower niche breadth at lo

Highlighting zoonotic importance of synanthropic fleas through microbiome analysis.

The role of domestic and peridomestic animals in vector-borne diseases is critical as they share a common environment with people having the potential to extend the network of pathogen transmission to humans. In the present study, amplicon sequencing was employed to characterize the microbial communities associated with five flea species (Archaeopsylla erinacei, Ctenocephalides felis, Spilopsyllus cuniculi, Pulex irritans and Ctenocephalides canis) collected from dogs, cats, and hedgehogs in Andalusia (Spain). The analysis focused on identifying the presence and infection rate of pathogenic ba

Current knowledge on fleas (Siphonaptera) associated with human plague transmission in Madagascar.

Fleas are ectoparasites of mammals and birds. Some species are known for their medical and veterinary importance. Particularly for humans and domestic animals, fleas are often merely nuisance species, but may also be disease vectors. Some well-known infectious diseases are transmitted from animals to humans by flea bites: murine typhus, spotted-fever, bartonelloses and plague. Particularly for plague, more than 80 species were reported vectors in the world and some are internationally renowned and have been the focus of studies over decades. In Madagascar, fleas are associated with two disease

Microorganisms associated with hedgehog arthropods.

Hedgehogs are small synanthropic mammals that live in rural areas as well as in urban and suburban areas. They can be reservoirs of several microorganisms, including certain pathogenic agents that cause human and animal public health issues. Hedgehogs are often parasitized by blood-sucking arthropods, mainly hard ticks and fleas, which in turn can also carry various vector-born microorganisms of zoonotic importance. Many biotic factors, such as urbanization and agricultural mechanization, have resulted in the destruction of the hedgehog's natural habitats, leading these animals to take refuge

Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) with public health relevance in domestic pigs (Artiodactyla: Suidae) from Argentina.

The presence of fleas can have a great negative impact on the productivity and well-being of the animals, and can contribute towards propagation of causative pathogens of important diseases in animals and humans. Fleas and domestic pigs (Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758) are a known association. However, knowledge about fleas on pigs in Argentina is scarce. In this country, swine farming has become one of the main components of livestock production. This activity is primarily carried out by smallholder farmers, involving a potential risk to humans of acquiring pathogens. Our study was developed in Bu

Intrinsic Activity of IGRs Against Larval Cat Fleas.

Insect growth regulators (IGRs) such as lufenuron, methoprene, and pyriproxyfen have been important tools in the integrated pest management of cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché), for the past two decades. Other IGRs have been registered for the control of termite, dipteran, and lepidopterous pests including chlorfluazuron, cyromazine, dicyclanil, and precocene I, but have been not tested against C. felis. The intrinsic activity of IGRs was determined by exposing larvae to treated larval rearing media. The LC50s of chlorfluazuron, cyromazine, dicyclanil, lufenuron, and precocene I agains

Evidence on the prevalence of emerging and re-emerging tick- and flea-borne rickettsial agents in acute encephalitis syndrome endemic areas of northeast Uttar Pradesh, India.

Outbreaks of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) with unknown aetiology are reported every year in Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh, India, and Orientia tsutsugamushi, the rickettsial pathogen, responsible for scrub typhus has been attributed as the primary cause of AES problem. However, information on the prevalence of other rickettsial infections is lacking. Hence, this study was carried out to assess any occurrence of tick- and flea-borne rickettsial agents in villages reporting AES cases in this district. In total, 825 peridomestic small mammals were trapped, by setting 9254 Sherman traps i

Adherence to veterinary recommendations for ectoparasiticides purchased by cat owners in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Safe and effective flea and tick treatment options for cats are important in companion animal practice because of feline ectoparasite infestation prevalence and the potential for parasitic disease transmission. Retrospective cat owner purchasing transactions at United States of America (USA) veterinary clinics were obtained for three topical feline flea and tick ectoparasiticides. One medication, fluralaner, had a 12-week redosing interval, while two other medications (fipronil/s-methoprene/pyriproxyfen; imidacloprid/pyriproxyfen) were approved for monthly redosing. The annual numb

Plague in a Colony of Gunnison's Prairie Dogs ( Cynomys gunnisoni) Despite Three Years of Infusions of Burrows with 0.05% Deltamethrin to Kill Fleas.

At Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico, US, infusing Gunnison's prairie dog ( Cynomys gunnisoni) burrows with an insecticide dust containing 0.05% deltamethrin killed fleas which transmit bubonic plague. The reduction in the number of fleas per prairie dog was significant and dramatic immediately after infusions, with a suggestion that the reduction persisted for as long as 12 mo. Despite the lower flea counts, however, a plague epizootic killed >95% of prairie dogs after 3 yr of infusions (once per year). More research is necessary for a better understanding of the efficacy of inse

A suburban focus of endemic typhus in Los Angeles County: association with seropositive domestic cats and opossums.

Thirty-three cases of locally acquired murine typhus were reported in Los Angeles County residents from May 1984 through February 1988. Only eight cases were reported over the previous 20-year period. Thirty (91%) cases resided within a suburban area encompassing approximately 50 km2 in northcentral Los Angeles or had contact with an animal from this area. Serologic testing (complement fixation and indirect fluorescent antibody) of selected animals in close association with human cases revealed a high prevalence of seropositivity among domestic cats and opossums. Nine (90%) of 10 resident cats
