Percutaneous bladder catheterization in microgravity.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary obstruction (UO) or failure to void has been observed during several episodes of short-duration spaceflight, necessitating bladder catheterization. It should be considered a possible medical condition in long-duration space missions as well. Antiemetics used early in space flight add to the risk and severity of voiding problems, along with the sensory and psychological peculiarities of voiding without gravity and in the unusual setting of a spacecraft. Urolithiasis due to the above-normal calcium excretion increases the risk of UO in long duration space missions. Finally,

An explicit analytical model for passive twist and systematic optimization of membrane flapping wings.

The hovering performance of membrane flapping-wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) is governed by numerous coupled parameters, making rapid forward optimization difficult via traditional empirical trials or localized fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis. This paper proposes a systematic design framework based on a decoupled parametric configuration and an explicit twist formula. First, a parametric wing design method is developed, in which the wing planform and dominant vein constraints are reduced to a small set of geometric variables, thereby simplifying the design space while preserving t

The effect of eave and window modifications on house entry behavior of Anopheles gambiae.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes transmit malaria parasites to humans mostly by biting them indoors at night, entering houses predominantly through ventilation openings such as open eaves and windows. In the study reported here, we studied how flying An. gambiae approach and enter a house, and whether barriers to reduce mosquito house entry alter mosquito flight patterns. METHODS: Stereoscopic high-speed videography was used to reconstruct nearly 70,000 three-dimensional tracks of mosquitoes flying around a house during 30 experimental nights, with five combinations of closed or scree

Gliding flight in Chrysopelea: turning a snake into a wing.

Although many cylindrical animals swim through water, flying snakes of the genus Chrysopelea are the only limbless animals that glide through air. Despite a lack of limbs, these snakes can actively launch by jumping, maintain a stable glide path without obvious control surfaces, maneuver, and safely land without injury. Jumping takeoffs employ vertically looped kinematics that seem to be different than any other behavior in limbless vertebrates, and their presence in a closely related genus suggests that gap-crossing may have been a behavioral precursor to the evolution of gliding in snakes. Mating biology of the leaf-cutting ants Atta colombica and A. cephalotes.

Copulation behavior has often been shaped by sexually selected sperm competition or cryptic female choice. However, manipulation of previously deposited ejaculates is unknown in the social Hymenoptera and the degree to which sperm competes after insemination or is actively selected by females has remained ambiguous. We studied the mating process in the leaf-cutting ants Atta colombica and A. cephalotes, which belong to one of the few derived social insect lineages where obligate multiple mating has evolved. As copulations often occur at night and in remote places, direct observations were impo

Dispersive flight by Triatoma sordida.

One hundred and thirty-two male and female Triatoma sordida were marked with fluorescent paint and released at an experimental site on the salt flats of central Argentina, distant from any inhabited dwellings. Flight by these bugs commenced just after sunset, and the bugs were then systematically searched for using portable ultraviolet lights. There was no apparent tendency for the bugs to fly in any particular direction, but those whose flight could be observed directly all seemed to fly in approximately straight lines at a height of 0.5-1 m. Of the 86 bugs that flew from the release point, 1

Identification of Trueperella bernardiae isolated from peking ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) by phenotypical and genotypical investigations and by a newly developed loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay.

Trueperella (T.) bernardiae is a well-known bacterial pathogen in infections of humans, rarely in animals. In the present study, five T. bernardiae isolates, isolated from five Peking ducks of four different farms, were identified by phenotypic properties, by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis, and genotypically by sequencing the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene, the superoxide dismutase A encoding gene sodA, and the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase encoding gene gap. In addition, the T. bernardiae isolates could be identif

Surveillance of Rift Valley Fever Virus in Mosquito Vectors of the Republic of Korea.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an acute mosquito-borne viral zoonotic disease that affects mainly domestic ruminants and humans. RVF virus (RVFV) was first identified in Kenya in 1931 and was reported to be endemic in Africa but has recently spread to the Arabian Peninsula. With increasing climate change and globalization of trade in animals and animal products, there is great concern that the disease will spread worldwide to regions such as Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Although RVFV has not been reported in the Republic of Korea (ROK), the possibility of RVFV introduction is increasing because

Wing structure and neural encoding jointly determine sensing strategies in insect flight.

Animals rely on sensory feedback to generate accurate, reliable movements. In many flying insects, strain-sensitive neurons on the wings provide rapid feedback that is critical for stable flight control. While the impacts of wing structure on aerodynamic performance have been widely studied, the impacts of wing structure on sensing are largely unexplored. In this paper, we show how the structural properties of the wing and encoding by mechanosensory neurons interact to jointly determine optimal sensing strategies and performance. Specifically, we examine how neural sensors can be placed effect

The organization of defensive behavior elicited by optogenetic excitation of rat lateral or ventrolateral periaqueductal gray.

Rodents display characteristic defense responses to predators that are influenced by predatory imminence. The midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG) serves an important role controlling these responses. The most influential model states that variations in defensive topography are due to distinct PAG regions: ventrolateral PAG (VLPAG) controls postencounter defense, such as freezing and immobility, whereas lateral PAG (LPAG) controls circa-strike defense, such as escape and flight. Here we used channel rhodopsin (ChR2) stimulation to probe the structure of defensive behavior controlled by LPAG and

Acute bronchopneumonia with Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteremia in an immunocompromised patient with bronchiectasis: A case report and review of the literature.

Bordetella bronchiseptica rarely causes human disease, and bloodstream infection is exceptional. We describe a 69-year-old man with follicular lymphoma on lenalidomide-rituximab, complicated by hypogammaglobulinemia and bronchiectasis, who developed acute bronchopneumonia with B. bronchiseptica bacteremia. Despite pre-admission oral levofloxacin, he presented with fever and productive cough. Computed tomography of the chest revealed new ground-glass and consolidative opacities. Two aerobic blood-culture bottles yielded slender Gram-negative rods; direct matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionizat

A Spinosad-Based Formulation Reduces the Survival and Alters the Behavior of the Stingless Bee Plebeia lucii.

The decline in bee populations worldwide has been associated with the use of pesticides in crop systems where these insects forage. The use of biopesticides, like spinosad, is preferred as an alternative method to control pests, because it is considered safer to non-target insects. In this study, we evaluated the lethal and sublethal effects of the spinosad-based formulation Tracer® on foragers of the stingless bee Plebeia lucii Moure (Apidae: Meliponini). Groups of bees were fed a pure diet (negative control) or a diet at different concentrations of spinosad. Positive control groups consisted

Prenatal development in pterosaurs and its implications for their postnatal locomotory ability.

Recent fossil finds in China and Argentina have provided startling new insights into the reproductive biology and embryology of pterosaurs, Mesozoic flying reptiles. Nineteen embryos distributed among four species representing three distinct clades have been described and all are assumed to be at, or near, term. We show here how the application of four contrasting quantitative approaches allows a more precise identification of the developmental status of embryos revealing, for the first time to our knowledge, the presence of middle and late developmental stages as well as individuals that were

Circadian control of migratory restlessness and the effects of exogenous melatonin in the brambling, Fringilla montifringilla.

Circadian pacemakers control both "daytime" activity and nocturnal restlessness of migratory birds, and the daily rhythm of melatonin release from the pineal has been suggested to be involved in the control of migratory activity. To study the phase relations between the two activity components during entrainment and when free running, locomotor activity of bramblings (Fringilla montifringilla) was recorded continuously under a 12:12 "cool light" to "warm light" cycle (CL:WL, ca. 5,000 K and ca. 2,500 K, respectively) or blue light to red light cycle (BL:RL. maxima at 440 and 650 nm, respective

Ventilation and respiratory evaporation in the flying crow, Corvus ossifragus.

Tidal volume (VT), respiration frequency (f) and respiratory evaporation (mre) were measured in the passeriform fish crow, Corvus ossifragus (mass 0.28 kg), during steady state, horizontal, wind-tunnel flight, at air speeds of 7.4-11.0 m-sec-1 and air temperatures (TA) of 12-28 degrees C. Ventilation (V1) of the respiratory system was calculated as f-VT. All parameters were independent of speed. Respiration frequency was independent of TA. VT and V1 were independent of TA below 23 degrees C, but above 23 degrees C increased linearly, as did mre. Oxygen extraction (E), the fraction of available

The fate and migration of microfilariae of a Guatemalan strain of Onchocerca volvulus in Simulium ochraceum and S. metallicum, and the role of the buccopharyngeal armature in the destruction of microfilariae.

The migration and fate of microfilariae of a Guatemalan strain of Onchocerca volvulus in Simulium ochraceum and S. metallicum was studied. The anatomical distribution of microfilariae at various times after ingestion was recorded from a study of histological sections of the flies. S. ochraceum showed higher microfilarial intakes than S. metallicum which is probably attributed to an inherent difference in their ability to ingest. The migration of microfilariae out of the mid-gut took place essentially through the expanded part (the stomach). Despite the high microfilarial intakes by S. ochraceu

A Proteomic Glance at the Bovine Intervertebral Disc.

Trauma- or age-inflicted intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration (IVDD) is a leading cause of chronic and severe low back pain. Raising interest in regenerative, cell-based therapies depends on a solid understanding of cell identities and their natural habitat, most importantly the extracellular matrix (ECM) composition. We and others previously proposed IVD biomarkers to characterize IVD cells. To complement our transcriptome data, we also investigated the proteome of the annulus fibrosus (AF) and nucleus pulposus (NP) bovine coccygeal tissue via nano liquid chromatography electrospray ionizat

Hypothalamus-sympathetic-liver axis mediates the early phase of stress-induced hyperglycemia in the male mice.

Rapid glucose supply is crucial for animal survival during stress response. How the timescale of stress-induced glucose release precisely controlled by hypothalamic corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) neurons remains unclear. Here, we show that stress-induced hyperglycemia can be divided into at least two stages in male mice: the first fast stage is mediated by hypothalamus (paraventricular to ventromedial hypothalamus)-sympathetic (raphe pallidus nucleus to intermediolateral nucleus)-liver (HSL) axis activity; the second delayed stage is mediated by adrenal activity. Blocking the activity o
