Low postpartum rubella vaccination rates in high-risk women, Miami, Florida, 2001.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate adherence to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' recommendations on postpartum rubella vaccination in hospitals with a high proportion of foreign-born Latina mothers, the highest risk group for congenital rubella syndrome. METHODS: In four large hospitals in Miami-Dade County, maternal medical records for births in 2001 were randomly selected. Using demographic information from birth certificates, vaccination information from medical records, and policy information from a hospital survey, postpartum rubella vaccination rates were characterized among women

Prevalence and risk factors for heartworm infection in cats from northern Florida.

Necropsies were performed on 630 adult cats in northern Florida to determine the prevalence and risk factors for heartworm infection in cats of this region. Heartworms were identified in 4.9% of cats, and serological evidence of heartworm exposure was present in 17% of cats. Not all cats from which heartworms were recovered were seropositive for heartworm antigen or antibody. There was no association between heartworm infection and co-infection with feline leukemia virus (FeLV) or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Male cats were at higher risk of infection with heartworm, FeLV, or FIV than …

Lymphoma and lymphoid leukemia incidence in Florida children: ethnic and racial distribution.

BACKGROUND: Incidence reports for pediatric lymphoma and lymphoid leukemia in Hispanic subpopulations in the United States are rare. The authors hypothesized that Florida's Hispanic children would have higher risks of lymphoma and lymphoid leukemia compared with non-Hispanic white children. METHODS: All cases of lymphoid leukemia, Hodgkin, non-Hodgkin, and Burkitt lymphoma (SEER International Classification of Diseases for Oncology codes) in children (< 15 years) in the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS) from 1985 to 1997 were studied. Cases were classified as: 1) white, 2) Hispanic, or 3) bla…

Characterization of kidney epithelial cells from the Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris.

The West-Indian manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris, is a herbivorous marine mammal found in the coastal waters of Florida. Because of their endangered status, animal experimentation is not allowed. Therefore, a cell line was developed and characterized from tissue collected during necropsies of the manatees. A primary cell culture was established by isolating single cells from kidney tissue using both enzymatic and mechanical techniques. Primary manatee kidney (MK) cells were subcultured for characterization. These cells were morphologically similar to the cell lines of epithelial origin.…

Mercury bioconcentration factors in American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) in the Florida everglades.

Alligators inhabiting the Florida Everglades contain elevated levels of mercury within their tissues due to accumulation of mercury in the sediments. The objective of this study was to determine the mercury bioconcentration factors (BCFs) in the alligators based on mercury concentrations in the alligator tissues and mercury levels in the water column. Data from studies on mercury concentrations in the Everglades alligator tissues and water quality were used to determine the mercury bioconcentration factors. The BCFs for juvenile and adult alligators were found to be very high, with liver and k…

Antibodies to arthropod-borne encephalitis viruses in small mammals from southern Florida.

From 1987 through 1991, blood samples were collected from 10 species of small mammals in Indian River Country, Florida (USA). Sera from 1,347 animals were analyzed for hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibody to St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) and eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) viruses. Of these, 75 (5.6%) were positive for HI antibody to SLE virus and 121 (9.0%) were positive for EEE antibody. Sera from five mammalian species were tested for neutralizing (NT) antibody to SLE, EEE, Highlands J (HJ a member of the western equine encephalitis virus complex), or Everglades (EVE, a member of the …

Increasing frequency of heterosexually transmitted AIDS in southern Florida: artifact or reality?

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) cases reported as the result of heterosexual contact have been increasing in the United States, with Florida reporting a disproportionate number. We investigated 168 such AIDS cases from southern Florida. After follow-up, 50 (30%) patients were reclassified into other transmission categories. The data suggest that the increased rate of heterosexually acquired AIDS cases reported from southern Florida was partially related to misclassification of risk.

Epidemic early syphilis--Escambia County, Florida, 1987 and July 1989-June 1990.

In Escambia County, Florida, the average number of early syphilis cases reported per quarter increased from 15 in 1987 to 75 in 1990 (Figure 1). To identify potential reasons for this epidemic, the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services and CDC used patient interview records to compare characteristics of patients with syphilis diagnosed before and during the epidemic. This report summarizes the characteristics of 82 patients diagnosed and treated from January through December 1987 (the preepidemic period) and 256 patients diagnosed and treated from July 1989 through June 1990…

Cysticerci (Cestoda: Taeniidae) from white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, in southern Florida.

Metacestodes (cysticerci) of Taenia omissa Lühe, 1910, and Taenia hydatigena Pallas, 1776, were found in 9 and 1 of 124 white-tailed deer, respectively, in southern Florida in 1984-1986. Intensities of T. omissa varied from 1 to 15 (mean = 4.6); only 1 cysticercus of T. hydatigena was collected. No significant difference in the prevalences of T. omissa according to sex, age, or locality was observed.

Clinical, clinicopathologic, and epidemiologic features of anhidrosis in central Florida Thoroughbred horses.

A group of 834 Thoroughbred horses was surveyed on four central Florida farms for clinical and epidemiologic features of anhidrosis. In addition, comparative analysis was made of serum thyroxine, serum electrolytes, and fractional urinary electrolyte excretion ratios. An overall disease prevalence of 6.12% was observed. Training horses and nonpregnant broodmares had a predilection for the disease. Adolescent horses were infrequently affected. There was no correlation with sex or color. Comparative clinical signs, related to thermoregulatory compromise, included tachypnea and hyperthermia. Long…

Endemic eastern equine encephalomyelitis in Florida: a twenty-year analysis, 1955-1974.

Research and surveillance programs relating to the circulation of eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) virus in Florida between 1955 and 1974 are summarized. All available data suggest that EEE virus is 1) endemic in many Florida fresh water swamps and waterways, 2) active in a continuous cycle throughout the year with a peak between May and August, and 3) circulating in Culiseta melanura. It has been isolated also from eight other mosquito species.

Geographic Distribution of Florida's Orthopedic Surgery Workforce: A County-Level Analysis.

BACKGROUND: As Florida's population growth surges, access to orthopedic care is increasingly important, yet statewide geographic accessibility remains underexplored. This study aims to conduct a county-level analysis of the distribution and availability of orthopedic surgeons serving Florida's rural and urban populations. METHODS: Orthopedic surgeons licensed to practice in Florida were identified using the Florida Department of Health Practitioner Profile database, including primary clinical practice address and residency training state. Counties were categorized as metropolitan (Rural-Urban…

Chagas disease in Florida: An emerging one health challenge in the United States.

Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, poses an underrecognized public health risk in the United States, especially in states like Florida with both imported and potential for autochthonous transmission. Florida's ecological, demographic, and climatic factors-along with the presence of infected vectors and animal reservoirs-make it a high-risk region. However, limited surveillance, diagnostic infrastructure, and clinical awareness have led to significant underdiagnosis. Drawing on a One Health framework, this article highlights Florida's vulnerability in the national Chagas disease lands…

A Systematic Review of Zoonotic Enteric Parasites in Synanthropic Mammalian Species in Florida.

Florida is home to a vast number of wildlife species that come into close contact with residents and domestic animals. As mammals are competent hosts for many zoonotic diseases, it is important to understand what exposure risks are present for both people and animals. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, this review analyzed published literature spanning 1963 through 2023 documenting zoonotic enteric parasites in synanthropic wild mammals of Florida, excluding mice and rats. Between an initial search conducted in 2022 and updated search …
