B vitamins for stroke prevention.

Supplementation with B vitamins (vitamin B9(folic acid), vitamin B12 and vitamin B6) lowers blood total homocysteine (tHcy) concentrations by about 25% and reduces the relative risk of stroke overall by about 10% (risk ratio (RR) 0.90, 95% CI 0.82 to 0.99) compared with placebo. Homocysteine-lowering interventions have no significant effect on myocardial infarction, death from any cause or adverse outcomes. Factors that appear to modify the effect of B vitamins on stroke risk include low folic acid status, high tHcy, high cyanocobalamin dose in patients with impaired renal function and concurr

Effect of Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation on the Level of Essential and Toxic Elements in Young Women.

Although simultaneous supplementation of iron and folic acid is justified, the potential interactions between these micronutrients and other elements are poorly known. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of iron and folic acid supplementation on the levels of selected essential and toxic elements in the serum of micronutrient-deficient young women. A total of 40 women participated in this study and were divided into two groups: study group (n = 23) (with iron and folate deficiency) and control group (n = 17). The study group received iron and folic acid supplements for 3 months.

A Randomized Trial of Quadruple-Fortified Salt for Anemia and Birth Defects Prevention in Southern India: Protocol Design and Methods.

BACKGROUND: Women of reproductive age are at an increased risk of anemia and micronutrient deficiencies. Evidence supports the role of periconceptional nutrition in the development of neural tube defects (NTDs) and other pregnancy complications. Vitamin B12 deficiency is a risk factor for NTDs and may modify folate biomarkers that predict NTD risk at the population level. There is an interest in mandatory fortification with vitamin B12 and folic acid for anemia and birth defect prevention. However, there are limited population-representative data needed to inform policy and guidelines. OBJECT

The role of histidine in the anemia of folate deficiency.

The amino acid histidine is metabolized to glutamic acid in mammalian tissue. Formiminoglutamic acid (FIGLU) is an intermediary in this reaction, and tetrahydrofolic acid is the coenzyme that converts it to glutamic acid. A test for folate deficiency concerns the measurement of urinary FIGLU excretion after a histidine load. It was observed that folate-deficient individuals receiving the histidine for the FIGLU test made hematological response that alleviated the anemia associated with this deficiency. This was unusual in that a biochemical test to determine the deficiency results in a benefic

Safe use of high intakes of folic acid: research challenges and paths forward.

Adequate folic acid intake is an effective dietary-based prevention tool for reducing the risk of neural tube defects. Achieving adequate intake for the prevention of neural tube defects frequently requires the consumption of foods fortified with folic acid and/or the use of folic acid-containing dietary supplements. To date, research on the potential for adverse effects of high intakes of folic acid has been limited. Without such research, it is difficult to define a value for high intake. In May 2015, an expert panel was tasked with examining the available scientific literature and making re

Efficacy of twice-weekly multiple micronutrient supplementation for improving the hemoglobin and micronutrient status of anemic adolescent schoolgirls in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Although iron deficiency is a major cause of anemia, other micronutrient deficiencies may also play a role. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether multiple micronutrient supplementation is more efficacious than is supplementation with iron and folic acid alone for improving the hemoglobin and iron status of anemic adolescent girls in Bangladesh. DESIGN: Anemic (hemoglobin < 12.0 g/dL) girls (n = 197) aged 14-18 y from rural schools in Dhaka District were entered into a randomized double-blind trial and received twice-weekly supplements of iron and folic acid (IFA group) or multiple micro

Reduction of incidence of prematurity by folic acid supplementation in pregnancy.

Folic acid administered to pregnant Bantu, whose diet is low in folate, was associated with a significant reduction in the incidence of prematurity. No such effect could be demonstrated in White patients subsisting on an average Western diet. This suggests that folate deficiency may contribute to the "pregnancy wastage" in populations whose dietary folate intake is low, and is a further indication for folic acid supplementation during pregnancy in these groups.

Prevalence and determinants of folate deficiency among urban Indian women in the periconception period.

Maternal folate insufficiency is of particular concern in developing countries due to its association with various adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of folate deficiency and its determinants among urban Indian women in the periconception period. Serum folate concentrations were measured in 584 women in early pregnancy (11 ± 3 weeks of gestation) using microbiological assay. Folate deficiency was detected in 24% women and possible deficiency was detected in 21% women. Multigravidity (aOR 1.84, 95% CI 1.16-2.92) and low education (aOR 1.67, 95% CI 1.06-2.62

Perspective: The High-Folate-Low-Vitamin B-12 Interaction Is a Novel Cause of Vitamin B-12 Depletion with a Specific Etiology-A Hypothesis.

Vitamin B-12 is a water-soluble vitamin that plays important roles in intermediary metabolism. Vitamin B-12 deficiency has many identifiable causes, including autoimmune and other gastrointestinal malabsorption disorders, dietary deficiency, and congenital defects in genes that are involved in vitamin B-12 trafficking and functions. Another putative cause of vitamin B-12 deficiency is the high-folate-low vitamin B-12 interaction, first suspected as the cause for observed relapse and exacerbation of the neurological symptoms in patients with pernicious anemia who were prescribed high oral doses

Nutritional determinants of plasma homocysteine.

The total Hcy, methionine, vitamin B12, folic acid and vitamin B6 blood concentrations were measured in apparently healthy adult subjects aged 20-30 years with three types of nutrition - 52 normal weight subjects of general population on traditional mixed diet (non-vegetarians), 52 normal weight vegetarians and 24 overweight and obese non-vegetarians. In the groups with lower methionine intake (vegetarians, normal weight non-vegetarians; methionine intake 0.45-2.12 g/day), Hcy values are dependent on vitamin B12 and folic acid. Vegetarian Hcy concentration is significantly increased and hyperh

Assessment of the maternal key micronutrient supply and its correlation with cord blood parameters in twin pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: Multiple pregnancy constitutes a large metabolic expense, so women with twin pregnancies and neonates born as twins might be at risk for micronutrient deficiencies. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess the supplementation used and supply with key micronutrients: iron, vitamin B12, folic acid and vitamin D in women with twin pregnancies and the correlations with cord blood indicators. METHODS: Maternal and cord blood samples were collected from 51 patients with twin pregnancies and 102 newborns born from those pregnancies between October 2020 and September 2023. Ferritin,

Pyrexia in a patient with megaloblastic anemia: a case report and literature review.

Deficiency of vitamin B12 and/or folic acid as a cause of pyrexia, though known, is rarely reported in literature. We aimed to report a case in a 51 year old woman, who presented with fever and pancytopenia and was diagnosed to have megaloblastic anemia secondary to vitamin B12 and folate deficiency. The pyrexia subsided following the intramuscular injection of vitamin B12 and oral folic acid administration. All the other infective, inflammatory/autoimmune, endocrine causes of pyrexia were excluded by appropriate investigations. Therefore, we suggest that all physicians be aware of megaloblast

Government-industry partnership in weekly iron-folic acid supplementation for women of reproductive age in the Philippines: impact on iron status.

The effectiveness of weekly iron-folic acid supplements promoted through a government-industry partnership was assessed in pregnant and non-pregnant women in the Philippines. Compliance to both weekly and daily supplementation increased during the year-long study period, but was highest with weekly supplementation. Serum ferritin and hematocrit increased significantly, whereas the hemoglobin level showed minimal change, probably because of lack of other heme-forming nutrients such as vitamin A. Serum ferritin increments were significantly higher in women taking the iron-folic acid supplements

The question is whether intake of folic acid from diet alone during pregnancy is sufficient.

UNLABELLED: PREGNANCY AND FOLIC ACID: Pregnancy is the most important period in life of every woman, partially for the number of physiological adaptations she is going through, partially for the expectance of new life. In addition, pregnancy is the "critical window" for development later in childhood, as a period of foetal programming during which nutrition plays one of crucial roles. Despite the general belief that nutrition through pregnancy is adequate and characterized by better nutritional habits, a number of studies do not corroborate this belief. ROLE OF FOLIC ACID: An adequate folate b

Rethinking folic acid fortification: A call for nuanced strategies and broader investigations.

This comment letter responds to Edward H. Reynolds' comprehensive review on folate, vitamin B12, one‑carbon metabolism, and nervous system health. While commending the review's insights into the potential neurological harms of excess folic acid, especially with vitamin B12 deficiency, we expand on several critical areas. We emphasize distinguishing synthetic folic acid's neurotoxicity from natural folates, urging further comparative studies. We highlight the underexplored long-term consequences of supraphysiological folic acid exposure in children and adolescents during critical neurodevelopme
