The follicular papules subsided following discontinuation of certolizumab pegol. Folliculitis-like lichenoid sarcoidosis should be included among the adverse cutaneous reactions of anti-TNF-α treatment.

Hidradenitis suppurativa/acne inversa is a diverse, enigmatic and distressful disease that has aroused growing interest in specialists from different disciplines. Both names describe its classical manifestations in the intertriginous regions and reflect the historical view of the disease definition, but cause confusions in the understanding of its pathogenesis and classification. In the light of the advance in clinical, histopathological and pathophysiological findings, we propose the term "dissecting terminal hair folliculitis" (DTHF) to characterize its disease nature as folliculitis instead…

Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CAMRSA) infection is a clinical problem of increasing global incidence. CAMRSA most commonly presents as abscess and cellulitis of the skin and soft tissue. However, the lesions of cutaneous CAMRSA infection are pleomorphic and may appear as erythematous pustules of superficial folliculitis. This report presents the cases of 2 patients with CAMRSA skin infection that presented as a superficial folliculitis. The distribution of CAMRSA-related, erythematous, folliculocentric pustules was periumbilical, in contrast to the lesional lo…

Folliculitis decalvans is a rare condition affecting mainly the scalp leading to scarring alopecia. Aetiology of the condition is still unknown, abnormal host response to Staphylococcus aureus has been postulated. We present a retrospective analysis of six cases of folliculitis decalvans presented to National Skin Centre (NSC), Singapore for the past five years, 1995-2000. The mean age of presentation was 39 years and ages ranged from 17 to 62 years. There were five male patients and one female patient. Duration of symptoms at presentation varied from six months to seven years. Occipital and v…

Folliculitis is a common inflammatory skin condition for which non-antibiotic topical management options remain limited. This pilot study reports clinical performance, safety, and feasibility data from the use of a medical device gel containing hyaluronic acid (HA) and hydrogen peroxide used in dermatologic practice. Adults aged 18-45 years with a diagnosis of folliculitis applied the gel for 8 weeks according to the instructions for use. Clinical outcomes included lesion count, Total Severity Score (TSS), Investigator Global Assessment of Performance (IGAP), patient satisfaction, and Dermatol…

This case study investigates the efficacy of tofacitinib, a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor, in treating refractory eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (EPF), a rare dermatological disorder characterized by recurrent pruritic pustules and eosinophilic infiltration. We present a 55-year-old male patient with an 8-month history of progressive facial erythema and pustules. Pre-treatment evaluation revealed extensive erythema, follicular papules, and pustules on both cheeks, accompanied by marked pruritus and an elevated peripheral eosinophil count (0.59×109/L).The patient had failed multiple conventi…

A 9-year-old boy with eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (EPF) was successfully treated with dupilumab. While reported in adult EPF, this is the first case of EPF treated with dupilumab in a child. Our case suggests dupilumab might be a favorable therapeutic option for EPF in children. Further research is needed to fully elucidate the efficacy and safety of dupilumab in children with EPF and to identify predictive factors for treatment response.

INTRODUCTION: Folliculitis decalvans (FD) is a rare scarring alopecia mainly affecting middle-aged men, characterized by recurring episodes of follicular pustules, crusts, erythema, tufted hairs, and scars.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the effectiveness of reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) compared to trichoscopy for diagnosing and monitoring FD.
METHODS: The study involved 24 Caucasian patients diagnosed with FD. Patients were examined using trichoscopy and RCM, with a focus on specific features like erythema and inflammatory cell distribution. A subgroup of 16 patients was follo…

Ichthyosis is a heterogeneous group of inherited skin disorders characterized by a defect of keratinization. Patients diagnosed with lamellar ichthyosis (LI) and some ichthyosiform syndromes, such as the Conradi-Hünermann-Happle syndrome (CHHS), usually present with hair loss. Even though only few dermatologic complaints carry as many emotional overtones as hair loss, there are very few data available in the literature regarding scalp histopathological features in ichthyosis. A better understanding of scalp changes in such context may result in new therapeutic strategies that in turn would enh

Because Malassezia folliculitis (MF) may clinically mimic acne vulgaris (AV), patients usually receive unnecessary and prolonged antibiotic treatment. We aimed to determine the prevalence of MF among patients with AV, and to evaluate its response to antifungal treatment. A total of 217 patients with AV underwent cytologic examination for the presence of Malassezia yeasts. Samples were obtained from lesional and nonlesional skin and stained with May-Grünwald-Giemsa. MF was diagnosed if there were more than six spores in one microscopic field (at ×400 magnification). A modified "lesion-counting"…

Folliculitis is defined as the inflammation of the follicles. The most common cause of folliculitis is infection. Here, we report an unusual cause of suppurative infundibulitis-which had not yet been described in the literature-due to Leishmania infection, and exemplified by 6 cases that occurred in the setting of an epidemic outbreak. The 6 individuals were immigrants from Morocco. Most of them were men (4 men and 2 women), and most of them were less than 30 years old (apart from one 40-year-old woman). In all cases, a cutaneous biopsy was performed. There was a granulomatous folliculitis wit…

An association between adult scalp seborrhoeic dermatitis and cicatricial hair loss has not previously been convincingly established. This study seeks to demonstrate a unique relationship between a clinically identifiable chronic scalp dermatitis-folliculitis with the characteristic histological features of low-grade inflammatory fibrosing alopecia, resulting in a distinctive progressive cicatricial alopecia which we believe is prevalent and hitherto unrecognised, and befits the description of seborrhoeic folliculitis. The clinical, epidemiological and histopathological features of seborrhoeic…

Orthotopic heart transplant recipients need immunosuppressive treatment and are at an increased risk for opportunistic infections such as Malassezia folliculitis. During a 4-month period (July to October 1990), 11 such cases were identified and treated; all were male with mean age of 43+/-9 years and on standard triple immunosuppressive therapy. Skin scrapings in potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation with microscopy and/or culture identified either Malassezia furfur or Malassezia pachydermatis as the etiologic agent. A treatment with topical preparation (clotrimazole 1% and selenium sulfide lo…
