Food insecurity, mental distress and suicidal ideation in rural Africa: Evidence from Nigeria, Uganda and Ghana.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, mental and substance-related disorders account for 19% of all years lived with disability, yet the intersection between poverty and mental distress is poorly understood since most psychiatric research is conducted in high-income countries. AIMS: To examine the prevalence of and associations between food insecurity, mental distress and suicidal ideation in three rural village clusters in sub-Saharan Africa. METHOD: Cross-sectional multivariate analysis of sociodemographic variables associated with mental distress and suicidal ideation in three countries. The…

Cigarette Smoking among Women Who Are Homeless or Unstably Housed: Examining the Role of Food Insecurity.

Smoking prevalence remains high among individuals who are homeless, partly due to stressors related to homelessness. Beyond housing insecurity, homelessness involves financial stresses and unmet subsistence needs. In particular, food insecurity contributes to negative health outcomes and other health risks. This study examined associations between food insecurity severity and smoking among homeless and marginally housed women in San Francisco, California. We used data from 247 women from a longitudinal cohort study. Generalized estimating equations were used to estimate longitudinal associatio…

A pilot study examining food insecurity and HIV risk behaviors among individuals recently released from prison.

Annually 700,000 individuals are released from U.S. prison, many at risk for food insecurity and HIV. The association between food insecurity and HIV risk behaviors has been established but not in this population. To investigate this association, we recruited 110 recently released prisoners to participate in a survey. Ninety-one percent of our sample was food insecure; 37% did not eat for an entire day in the past month. Those who did not eat for an entire day were more likely to report using alcohol, heroin, or cocaine before sex or exchanging sex for money compared to those who had at least …

Experiences of food insecurity among urban soup kitchen consumers: insights for improving nutrition and well-being.

Adequate nutrition is an essential determinant of health. Disadvantaged individuals within the cities of developed countries continue to have poor health, yet the role of food insecurity in such groups is poorly understood. This cross-sectional study describes such experiences among 22 randomly selected participants who participated in interviews at a charity-run soup kitchen in urban Sydney, Australia. Interviews explored four constructs of food insecurity (quantitative, qualitative, psychological, and social), identifying related barriers and coping strategies. Reliable access to food was li…

Food insecurity among Latina women in Idaho and Washington: structural vulnerability, psychosocial factors, and cardiometabolic risk.

INTRODUCTION: Latina women in the United States face overlapping nutritional, social, and cardiometabolic vulnerability, yet how food insecurity, excess weight, and cardiometabolic risk co-occur in underrepresented communities remains insufficiently characterized. We examined food insecurity among Latina women in Idaho and Washington as a marker of vulnerability and situated it within a broader context of excess weight, prediabetes risk, and structural and psychosocial disadvantage. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey data were collected from 199 self-identified Latina women recruited through a s…

Food insecurity and at-home vegetable and sugar-sweetened beverage availability: TX Sprouts randomized controlled trial.

Food insecurity and the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages both influence dietary intake. However, most research on food insecurity and the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages is cross-sectional, which is problematic as both change frequently. Therefore, this study assessed how changes in food insecurity were associated with changes in the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages among those in the intervention and control groups of TX Sprouts. Parents who participated in TX Sprouts, a gardening, cooking, and nu…

Linking Food Insecurity and Coping Strategies to Children's Dietary Intake in Urban Areas in Surabaya, Indonesia.

Background: Food insecurity continues to pose a significant public health challenge in urban low-income communities, where limited resources and unstable food systems may negatively relate to children's nutrition. Although prior studies have linked food insecurity with inadequate dietary intake, the role of coping strategies in this relationship remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated the associations between household food insecurity, coping strategies, and children's dietary intake in densely populated urban areas of Surabaya, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study wa…

Food insecurity and youth suicidal behaviours: Evidence from the Canadian Health Survey of Children and Youth.

OBJECTIVE: Youth suicide, a major cause of death, is linked to poverty and other adverse experiences. Evidence of its association with food insecurity is unclear due to inadequate controls for household income in previous research. This cross-sectional study used independent reports of household income, food insecurity, and suicidal behaviours to examine these associations in a population-based sample. METHODS: The 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth surveyed 6735 youth (15-17 years), gathering data on sadness/hopelessness, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. Adults provide…

Hungry for connection: associations between social isolation, mental health, and food insecurity in regional Australian adults.

Food insecurity is increasingly recognized as a public health issue with social and psychological dimensions. However, evidence on its association with mental health and social isolation in regional Australia remains limited. A cross-sectional online survey among adults (≥18 years) living in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions of Australia assessed food insecurity using the 18-item USDA Household Food Security Survey Module, categorized into 'food secure' (score = 0) or 'food insecure' (score = 1+). Self-rated mental health and physical health (excellent/good vs. fair/poor) and reported diagn…

Novel intervention to improve food insecurity among individuals with opioid use disorder: A randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Food insecurity (FI) is 4-7 times greater among individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) than the general population and is associated with increased risk for licit and illicit drug use, sexual and drug risk behaviors, infectious disease, and a two-fold odds of premature death. In this randomized study, we evaluated a novel, mail-based meal delivery intervention for improving household FI and other outcomes among individuals with OUD. METHODS: Fifty adults with FI and OUD were randomized to one of two 12-week experimental conditions: Nutritional Education (NE) involved brief educ…

Prior incarceration and food insecurity trajectories through older adulthood: findings from the Health and Retirement Study.

INTRODUCTION: Prior cross-sectional research has identified incarceration as a risk factor for food insecurity across the life course. However, there is a lack of longitudinal studies on the relationship between prior incarceration and food insecurity over time. METHODS: This study uses biennial data across 10 time points from the Health and Retirement Study (years 2012-2022) to examine the association between prior incarceration and longitudinal trajectories of food insecurity among adults aged 55 and older in the USA (N=8229). Group-based trajectory modelling was used to assess patterns of …

"Everyone's struggling right now": Impact of COVID-19 on addressing food insecurity in rural primary care.

BACKGROUND: Primary care practices can address food insecurity (FI) through routine screening, practice-based food programmes, and referrals to community resources. The COVID-19 pandemic had disproportionate impacts on health outcomes for food-insecure households. OBJECTIVE: To describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on FI screening and interventions in rural primary care practices in northern New England. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with thirteen providers and staff regarding changes to FI screening and interventions, community resources and partnerships, and patie…

Perceived implications of COVID-19 policy measures on food insecurity among urban residents in Blantyre Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Malawi is at the brink of experiencing food insecurity amidst the COVID-19 pandemic as the vast majority of its population lives in extreme poverty. While measures are being implemented to avert the spread of COVID-19, little is known about how COVID-19 policy measures have impacted food insecurity in urban Malawi. This study addresses this gap by exploring the implications of COVID-19 policy measures on food insecurity in low-income areas of Blantyre in Malawi. METHODS: We used Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory to explore the implications of COVID-19 policy measures on peoples' …

Food Insecurity Among Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Individuals in the Southeast United States: A Qualitative Study.

Purpose: Transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people experience high rates of poverty, joblessness, and homelessness, which drive risk for food insecurity. TGNC people also face discrimination due to transphobia and cissexism, which may contribute to these drivers. Minimal empirical evidence describes experiences with food insecurity among TGNC people. This project investigated food insecurity among TGNC people and how these experiences relate to their physical and mental health. Methods: Semistructured telephone interviews were conducted with 20 TGNC people residing in the Southeast Un…
