Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease that affects various organs, including the musculoskeletal system. Tenosynovitis is a common manifestation of sarcoidosis involving the synovial sheaths surrounding the tendons. Sarcoid tenosynovitis is a rare form of tenosynovitis that has been reported in different locations, including the hand, wrist, and ankle. However, only a few foot cases have been reported in the literature. This report presents a case of sarcoid tenosynovitis in the foot and reviews the existing literature on this rare entity.

The increasing prevalence of diabatic foot ulcers (DFUs) is not only costly, but carries a large mortality burden. In this article, we discuss important traditional concepts in the management of DFUs and elaborate on how new technologies have expanded our ability to treat DFUs effectively. New supplies and wound care products have been developed to target the following traditional areas of focus: tissue, infection/inflammation, moisture, and edge. Offloading strategies have grown from standard orthotics or insoles to total contact casting and three-dimensional-printed orthotics to produce the …

Tendinopathies of the foot and ankle, including posterior tibial, peroneal, and tibialis anterior, are commonly overlooked by primary care physicians. The posterior tibial tendon is the main dynamic stabilizing muscle of the medial longitudinal arch. Patients who have posterior tibial tendinopathy present with medial ankle pain, pes planovalgus deformity, and a positive too many toes sign. Nonoperative treatment options include support for the medial longitudinal arch and physical therapy focusing on eccentric exercises. Surgical treatment is considered for patients who do not respond to nonop…

We describe the case of an 18-year-old male Army reservist presenting with left lower extremity pain for which he was initially diagnosed with a stress injury. After failing conservative treatment, a radiograph was obtained showing a "lacelike" appearance of the medullary bone in the foot and ankle. Magnetic resonance imaging subsequently demonstrated widespread polyostotic marrow replacement with coarsened trabeculations. A biopsy was obtained which diagnosed the patient with polyostotic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma which is the most common malignant vascular tumor of bone. The patient ul…

A systematic clinical examination of the foot, including a structured medical history, is essential for the diagnostics of foot disorders. The foot and ankle, with a total of 28 bones and numerous joints, require a variety of musculotendinous and neuromuscular structures for stabilization and faultless gait. Almost all anatomical structures of the foot are easily accessible for a manual clinical examination due to the sparse soft tissue covering. This requires differentiated and well-founded anatomical knowledge as well as examination experience to be able to distinguish a normal finding from …

A 68-year-old man with a slow-growing lesion in the distal medial band of the plantar fascia of the left foot is presented. Clinical photographs, ultrasound and magnetic resonance images, histologic results, and immunochemical staining are disclosed. This case study presentation aims to highlight the importance of including angioleiomyoma in the differential diagnosis of plantar foot soft-tissue masses.

Background and purpose - Preaxial polydactyly of the foot is a rare malformation and clinicians are often unfamiliar with the associated malformations and syndromes. In order to give guidelines for diagnostics and referral to a clinical geneticist, we provide an overview of the presentation using a literature review and our own patient population. Patients and methods - The literature review was based on the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) project. From the HPO dataset, all phenotypes describing preaxial polydactyly were obtained and related diseases were identified and selected. An overview wa…

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Based on a retrospective analysis, the authors present their experience with treatment of subtalar dislocation of the foot.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 1999 and 2011 six patients, all of them men, with the average age of 31 years were treated for subtalar fractures. Five patients were diagnosed with medial dislocation and one with lateral dislocation. In one patient with medial subtalar dislocation it was an open injury. The clinical and radiographic results of the patients followed up for 1 to 12 years (average, 7.8 years) were retrospectively evaluated.
RESULTS: The…

Diabetic foot ulcerations result from different physiopathological mechanisms; a clear understanding of them is crucial to reduce their incidence, provide early care, and finally delay the amputation risk. The three main diabetes complications involved in foot ulcerations are neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease, and infection. The most common pathway to ulceration is peripheral sensorimotor and autonomic neuropathy, leading to loss of sensitivity, foot deformities, high foot pressure, and dry skin. Peripheral arterial disease is more frequent and more serious in the diabetic population. It…

The Charcot foot (osteoarthropathy) is a significant lower extremity complication of diabetes mellitus that can result in significant deformity, ulceration, and subsequent limb loss. A result of even unrecognized trauma to an insensitive foot, continued weight bearing on the injured foot promotes the evolution of the disorder that is often diagnosed only after significant deformity has occurred. Although this entity is considered a rare complication of the diabetic population, it has profound implications for those persons affected. Greater awareness of the frequency, distribution, determinant…

Charcot foot is a serious problem that causes considerable morbidity and may lead to limb loss. Arriving at a definitive diagnosis can be challenging. Given the progressive, destructive nature of Charcot's arthropathy, this delay can result advancing deformity, ulceration, infection, and place the limb at risk for amputation. Although clinical signs and symptoms and historical information are crucial, this article focuses on the imaging modalities that can aid practitioners in arriving at an early diagnosis, and how to differentiate Charcot's arthropathy from osteomyelitis of the feet.
