Case Report: an unusual case of a penetrating intracranial metallic foreign body removed via surgery.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Intracranial foreign bodies resulting from criminal assaults that cause penetrating trauma are relatively rare. Such cases are often accompanied by significant complications, including intracranial hemorrhage, cerebral contusion, major vascular injury, and cerebrospinal fluid leakage, which pose substantial challenges in clinical management. Herein, we report a successful case of surgical treatment for an intracranial metallic foreign body, aiming to provide valuable insights for similar clinical scenarios. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old male patient was urgen

A prospective, randomised trial comparing the use of absorbable and metallic screws in the fixation of distal tibiofibular syndesmosis injuries: mid-term follow-up.

Our aim was to compare polylevolactic acid screws with titanium screws when used for fixation of the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis at mid-term follow-up. A total of 168 patients, with a mean age of 38.5 years (18 to 72) who were randomly allocated to receive either polylevolactic acid (n = 86) or metallic (n = 82) screws were included. The Baird scoring system was used to assess the overall satisfaction and functional recovery post-operatively. The demographic details and characteristics of the injury were similar in the two groups. The mean follow-up was 55.8 months (48 to 66). The Baird sc

Intraoral pencil core granuloma with retained pencil lead.

Foreign body impactions can be frequently seen in childhood as children have a habit of putting different objects in the mouth. These impacted foreign bodies if not removed timely, at times can lead to severe reactions leading to granuloma formation. A simple injury, if ignored, can result in severe damage to oral tissue and even loss of the permanent tooth. Therefore, all penetrating injuries should be carefully assessed and treated timely. This study describes a rarest intraoral case of pencil core granuloma with retained graphite lead inside it that led to severe tissue reactions. Pencil co

The role of chemical mediators in the inflammatory response induced by foreign bodies: comparison with the schistosome egg granuloma.

Both divinyl benzene copolymer (plastic) beads and schistosome eggs produce inflammatory reactions after intravenous deposition into the lung of a mouse. As reported previously, the schistosome egg granuloma is an immunologic reaction of the delayed hypersensitivity type; this inflammatory process is prevented by immunosuppressive measures, and characteristically demonstrates an anamnestic response. In contradistinction, the plastic bead granuloma appears to be characteristic of a foreign body reaction; it is unaffected by immunosuppressive measures and does not demonstrate an anamnestic respo

Intraosseous hair-induced cyst-like lesion of the maxilla associated with trichotillomania: first reported case and review of the literature.

Heterotopic hair in the oral cavity is a rare condition, with possible etiologies including prior skin graft reconstruction, oral and maxillofacial trauma, or, in some clinical context, no identifiable cause. We report a case of a patient with trichotillomania who presented with a persistent sinus track opening between teeth #9 and #10 and a well-defined periradicular lesion in the area. Microscopically, it revealed a partially lined cyst-like entity containing terminal hairs, associated with a foreign body-type giant cell reaction. The patient admitted to a habit of repeatedly pulling and plu

Headache and MRI Changes after Endovascular Treatment of a Cerebral Aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: The main complications after endovascular therapy of intracranial aneurysms are aneurysm rupture and thromboembolic events. Yet, the widespread use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in follow-up of these patients also demonstrates other, rarely known complications such as aseptic meningitis and foreign body reaction. CASE PRESENTATION: A small aneurysm in the right posterior communicating artery was treated with endovascular therapy in a 65 year old woman. Two weeks after successful interventional treatment, the patient developed a headache. On MRI performed five months after in

Acute abdomen in the centanary patient, mesh migration into the sigmoid colon after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (TAPP): A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: The complications induced by mesh, such as foreign body reaction, deep-seated infection, mesh migration and perforation into viscera, have been reported sporadically. Colon erosion and penetration by laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) inguinal hernia repair mesh can possibly cause perforation of the colon with acute abdomen. CASE PRESENTATION: A 100-year-old male, who underwent 4 years ago TAPP repair of left inguinal, presented to the emergency department with acute abdomen due to chronic mesh penetration into the sigmoid colon, the migrating mesh generated a free w

Acute Joint Blockage due to Abrasion-Related Dislocation of a Silastic Radial Head Prosthesis: A Histological Examination after 14 Years of Durability.

The implantation of a radial head prosthesis can take place as a therapeutic option after radial head fracture. There are various implants for this purpose. Many studies and case reports about silastic radial head prosthesis implantation describe foreign body reactions with accompanying synovitis and poor functional results. A few studies have investigated the reason for the material failure and the accompanying synovitis. The case report presented shows an unusually long durability of an in situ 14-year silastic radial head prosthesis. 14 years after implantation, a previously full-time worki

[Post-traumatic cyst of the scaphoid--a case report].

Carpal bone cysts are very uncommon and they are usually occasionally diagnosed during radiological examination of the wrist after trauma. Some carpal bone cysts are symptomatic and then they are revealed on routine X-ray investigation. We present a case of 14 years old boy, in whom a scaphoid bone cyst developed around the foreign body (a splinter), stacked into the wrist when he fell on the wooden board. Because of pain, swelling and reduction of active range of motion of the wrist occurred at the load of the hand and lasted 3 months, patient was given radiological examination which was nega

An intestinal volvulus caused by multiple magnet ingestion: an unexpected risk in children.

It has been reported that ingested magnets can cause intestinal fistula formation or perforation, leading to intestinal obstruction. However, there are no previous case reports that magnet ingestion additionally caused an intestinal volvulus. We report herein the case of a 1-year-old boy in whom the ingested magnets caused a volvulus of part of the small intestine leading to the resection of the necrotic portion. We think that if more than one magnet is found as a foreign body in the intestine, they should be removed immediately by laparotomy. Clinicians who care for children should be aware o

Systemic Allergic Response in the Setting of a Metallic Intraorbital Foreign Body With Intraoperative Magnet-Assisted Retrieval.

A 12-year-old boy with a past medical history of nickel allergy was referred to our service after sustaining an air rifle injury with a retained BB in his left inferior orbit. On examination, he had a palpable orbital mass and systemic urticaria. Plain films demonstrated a spherical metallic foreign body adjacent to the left inferior orbital rim. Given his worsening systemic reaction despite oral antihistamine therapy, decision was made to remove the foreign body. In the operating room, the Allergan Magna Finder-a prepackaged, sterile device normally used for retrieval of a port used in tissue

Cytomorphological spectrum of pilomatricoma - A series of 28 cases.

BACKGROUND: Pilomatricoma is a benign tumour that originates in the outer sheath of the hair follicle root. The clinical diagnosis of this rare entity is often missed, possibly due to a lack of awareness. Its characteristic cytomorphological features are sheets of ghost cells, basaloid cells, calcification and foreign body giant cell reaction. However, the above features may not all be present in all cases, rendering cytological diagnosis difficult. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included all cases of pilomatricoma diagnosed on fine needle aspiration over a period of 4 years.

Surgical Removal of Hearing Aid Earmold Impression Material in the Middle Ear.

When fitting hearing aids, patients are required to make an earmold impression material for device fixation. It usually causes no problems, although in rare cases, the earmold passes through the middle ear through tympanic membrane perforations.1-3 Foreign bodies may cause a delayed inflammatory reaction and deterioration of aeration, especially in the Eustachian tube. Herein, we report a rare case of earmold impression material as a foreign body in the middle ear that required surgical removal.

Possible relationship between chronic inflammation and pyloric metaplasia in a patient with lobular endocervical glandular hyperplasia.

BACKGROUND: Lobular endocervical glandular hyperplasia (LEGH) is a rare entity of a pseudoneoplastic benign condition of the uterine cervix, and its histogenesis and pathological significance including a connection with carcinogenesis of the endocervical gland has not yet been fully recognized. CASE: We describe a rare case of localized LEGH, which developed adjacent to a cesarean section scar. A 53-year-old premenopausal woman presented with a recent onset of abdominal distention and menorrhagia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple uterine myomas including submucosal myoma and local
