The ENT Management of Acute Frontal Sinusitis With Intracranial Complications in Adult Patients.

OBJECTIVES: To describe how adult patients with suppurative intracranial complications of acute frontal sinusitis have been managed across three neurosurgical centers in the northwest of England, United Kingdom. METHODS: A retrospective analysis over a 5-year period investigating adult patients (> 18 years old) presenting with acute frontal sinusitis with intracranial complications. RESULTS: Forty two patients were identified. 76.2% were male with a mean age of 43.1 years. The most common presenting complaint was headache. Subdural collection was the most common intracranial complication. Th…

Maxillary Antrostomy Versus Complete Sinus Surgery for Odontogenic Sinusitis With Frontal Sinus Extension.

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is often necessary when managing odontogenic sinusitis (ODS), but ESS extent for ODS with extramaxillary sinus involvement has been incompletely studied. This study compared outcomes after wide maxillary antrostomy (MA) alone versus complete ESS for ODS with frontal sinus involvement. METHODS: A multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted on patients with uncomplicated ODS (no extrasinus spread) who underwent ESS when computed tomography demonstrated maxillary, anterior ethmoid (AE), and frontal sinus opacification. Multiple preoperative and p

Extensive subgaleal abscess and epidural empyema in a patient with acute frontal sinusitis.

Acute frontal sinusitis can be a serious condition because of its potential life-threatening complications. These complications, including spread of infection to the frontal bone and intracranially, require prompt diagnosis and intervention to avoid morbidity and mortality. We report a case of acute frontal sinusitis in a 16-year-old girl who presented with fever, severe headache, and vomiting of 3 days' duration. Generalized fluctuant swelling of the nasal root, and bilateral supraorbital and frontoparietal regions was noted. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated left pansinusitis, extensive …

Subdural empyema and blindness due to cavernous sinus thrombosis in acute frontal sinusitis.

In this era of antibiotics, the complications of acute sinusitis are much less frequently encountered. Although orbital complications are most common, intracranial complications carry a high rate of mortality and morbidity. We describe a case of acute frontal sinusitis with subdural empyema and blindness due to cavernous sinus thrombosis and carotid artery thrombosis with a discussion of treatment of these complications and the etiology of blindness in sinusitis.

Frontal sinuses as tools for human identification: a systematic review of imaging methods.

The frontal sinuses are potential evidences for human identification because of the inherent distinctiveness of their morphology. Over the last decades, several techniques emerged to enable the visualization and analysis of the frontal sinuses via bi- and three-dimensional imaging. This systematic review aimed to compile different methodological approaches found in the scientific literature to contribute to human identification. Three examiners revisited the scientific literature in order to find imaging techniques for the visualization of the frontal sinuses applied to human identification. T

Frontal sinuses for identification: quality of classifications, possible error and potential corrections.

Many studies have examined the characteristics of the frontal sinuses and their use for forensic purposes, particularly when an individual is edentulous. One of the most widespread classification systems is that proposed by Yoshino et al. The aim of this study was to improve the performance of Yoshino's method for identifying unknown skeletal remains by replacing the first two morphological items, frontal sinus size and bilateral asymmetry, by SOR1 = left frontal sinus area/left orbit area, and SOR2 = right frontal sinus area/right orbit area. According to the bivariate distribution of SOR = (

[Surgical management of inflammatory disease in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses (author's transl)].

The opening microscope became very important in nasal sinus surgery, especially for operating procedures of the ethmoid sinus. For many authors nasal polyposis without putrid secretion is an indication not only for polypectomy, but for ethmoidectomy. Using the operating mikroscope frontal sinus surgery can be performed in a much more delicate way. The best cosmetic results are seen after osteoplastic opening of the frontal sinus. This technique can not be used if ostitis or osteomyelitis is present. There are several ways to treat mucosal changes in the frontal sinus. Its lumen may be drained

Pott's Puffy Tumor: A Case Report of a Rare Complication of Frontal Sinusitis.

Among complications of frontal sinusitis, Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is one of the rare complications, which is characterized by the occurrence of subperiosteal abscess and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. Primarily, infection or trauma is the causative agent and is often seen in late childhood and adolescence. If left untreated for a longer period of time, further intracranial complications such as subdural empyema, epidural abscess, cerebral abscess, and meningitis may occur. We report a case of a 13-year-old male who presented with a history of a fall 15 days ago, and the clinical query was…

Primary Extradural Meningioma Presenting as Frontal Sinusitis with Extensive Bony Changes: Case report.

Primary extradural meningiomas are rare tumours and calvarial meningiomas with extensive bony changes and frontal sinusitis are rarer still. We report a 40-year-old female patient who presented to the otorhinolaryngologist at the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital in Muscat, Oman, in October 2013 with headaches and frontal swelling. She was diagnosed with frontal sinusitis complicated by osteomyelitis. Further clinical examination and imaging revealed a left frontal calvarial meningioma with extensive bony changes and extracalvarial extension into the frontal sinus. She underwent a left frontal…
