Correlates of pre-exposure prophylaxis amongst transgender women of color taking gender-affirming hormone therapy: Findings from the TURNNT cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The Trying to Understand Relationships, Networks, and Neighborhoods Among Transgender Women of Color (TURNNT) Cohort Study provides a unique opportunity to identify correlates of PrEP use amongst transgender women of color taking gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT). METHODS: We analyzed baseline data from the TURNTT Cohort Study, restricting our sample to those taking GAHT. We examined individual, interpersonal, and structural characteristics in association with current PrEP use using bivariate and multivariable models. RESULTS: Healthcare factors played a critical role among

Persistence of severe global sex-based inequalities in the burden of visual impairment.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Sex-based disparities in vision impairment are a major global health concern. This study quantifies these disparities across major blinding diseases and assesses their association with national-level gender inequality. METHODS: In this repeated ecological analysis of Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 data, we analysed sex-disaggregated age-standardised years lived with disability (YLD) rates and prevalence for major blinding diseases. Temporal trends were assessed using average annual per cent change (AAPC). Linear regression examined associations between sex differences an

Acción PrEP: A Multi-Method Pilot Design to Assess the Feasibility of Community Co-Designed Implementation Strategies to Advance PrEP Uptake Among Latines in the U.S. South.

INTRODUCTION: Despite systemic inequities in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among Latines (a gender-inclusive term for people of Latin American descent, used to promote inclusivity and language justice), clinic-level implementation strategies addressing health equity-related PrEP barriers are underutilized. This multi-method study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of community-co-designed, equity-focused strategies to improve PrEP uptake among Latines in the Southern United States. METHODS: Facilitated by a community-based organization (CBO)/academic partnership, a workgroup

From Awareness to Action: Co-Designing Culturally Safe and Equitable Rehabilitation in Canada - Protocol for the Two-Phase Ireach Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Inequities in access, engagement, and outcomes persist across outpatient rehabilitation services in Canada, disproportionately affecting Indigenous Peoples, newcomers and refugees, gender- and sexually-diverse individuals, and people with lower income. Although rehabilitation professionals report strong awareness of equity, diversity, inclusion, and cultural safety principles, a persistent gap remains between knowledge and day-to-day clinical practice. Existing resources largely focus on education without providing practical, clinic-level tools or aligned patient-facing supports to

Counting what counts: Time for an annual statistical update on neurologic health equity.

BACKGROUND: Neurologic diseases are among the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, yet the magnitude, distribution, and trajectory of neurologic disparities remain difficult to monitor across diseases and populations. OPPORTUNITY: Other fields have established powerful recurring statistical resources that have become essential references for clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and the public. For instance, the American Heart Association has produced an annual Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update for decades, integrating contemporary data on disease burden, ris

Compensatory Effects of Long-Term Care Insurance on Mental Health Among Rural Older Women: Evidence from China.

Background: Rural older women in China face intersecting disadvantages including eroded family support, limited pension coverage, and high social isolation that elevate depressive symptoms. Although Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) has expanded rapidly since 2016 to provide both financial protection and formal care services for older adults, whether it can compensate for depleted informal support and protect mental health among this vulnerable population remains unknown. Methods: We used five waves of CHARLS (2011-2020) with 2193 rural women aged ≥60. We employed a staggered difference-in-diffe

Geographic disparities and health inequality evolution in the disease burden of tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer in Asia: a 33-year longitudinal analysis and future projections.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined geographic patterns, temporal trends, and determinants of tracheal, bronchus, and lung (TBL) cancer burden in Asia (1990-2023), evaluated disparities in health outcomes, and developed projections for targeted prevention initiatives. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023. We estimated age-standardized rates (ASPR, ASIR, ASMR, ASDR). Joinpoint regression assessed temporal trends; age-period-cohort and Das Gupta analyses identified underlying mechanisms and drivers. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) evaluated efficiency relative to

Universal digital mental health interventions for children and youth: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) are increasingly used to support child and youth mental health, yet the scope and characteristics of universal (Tier 1) DMHIs remain poorly defined. METHODS: This scoping review synthesized peer- reviewed studies of universal DMHIs delivered to children and youth aged 0-18 years. RESULTS: Use of online programs and hybrid delivery were prevalent. Many programs used an independent structure, while facilitation varied across self- led, facilitator-led, and both-led models. Outcomes were commonly assessed across multiple domains, includi

Reducing or reproducing inequalities in health? An intersectional policy analysis of how health inequalities are represented in a Swedish bill on alcohol, drugs, tobacco and gambling.

BACKGROUND: According to post-structural policy analyses, policies and interventions aiming at reducing social inequalities have been found to be part in producing and reifying such inequalities themselves. Given the central role of health inequalities on the public health policy agenda globally it seems important to examine the way policy on health inequalities may potentially counteract the goal of health equity. The aim of this intersectional policy analysis, was to critically analyze the representation of health inequalities in a government bill proposing a national strategy on alcohol, dr

Broadening dementia risk models: building on the 2024 Lancet Commission report for a more inclusive global framework.

The 2024 Lancet Commission Report on dementia prevention has identified 14 modifiable risk factors that account for approximately 45% of global dementia cases. We used a global multidimensional approach that integrates gender equity considerations, poverty, wealth shocks, income inequality and HIV infection rates to identify additional risk factors beyond those reported in 2024 report. This methodological framework aims to enhance equitable prevention strategies to mitigate the global burden of dementia. We demonstrate that adding four additional risk factors: poverty, wealth shocks, income in…

Understanding Gender Gaps in Tobacco Consumption among Middle-Aged and Elderly Indians: Decomposition Analysis of LASI 2017-18.

BACKGROUND: While India is among the top consumers of tobacco globally, research is mostly limited to younger age groups. The present study aims to estimate the distribution of gender disparities in tobacco consumption across states and union territories. Further, our objective was to estimate socioeconomic inequalities of tobacco consumption as per wealth index across gender, and to determine the contribution of different demographic, socioeconomic, health related and behavioural factors to the gender disparities in tobacco consumption. METHODS: We did a secondary analysis of the data from 6

Are female-dominated cancers underfunded?

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, which accounts for one in sixth deaths. Given this substantial burden, funding agencies have invested heavily in cancer research over recent decades. However, the allocation of research funding does not always align with the burden of different cancers. This paper investigates the underfunding of research on female-dominated cancers in Europe and explores the mechanisms underlying the unequal distribution of research grants. Using a novel hand-collected dataset of 1078 projects funded by the European Commission between 2007 and 2023, we sh

Awareness and use of pre-exposure prophylaxis in a United States national sample of young sexual and gender minority men.

Young sexual and gender minority (SGM) men remain disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic. Although pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in preventing HIV acquisition, uptake among SGM men in the United States (US) remains suboptimal. To better understand disparities in PrEP awareness, use, and adherence, we examined baseline survey data from the Limited Interaction Targeted Epidemiology (LITE-2) cohort, which included 3,148 young SGM men (age 17-29) across the US and its territories. Bivariate chi-square with pairwise post-hoc comparisons with effect sizes were used to

Addressing gender-based disparities in liver transplantation: A global analysis of surgical access and donor organ allocation.

BACKGROUND: Sex- and gender-based inequities remain a persistent challenge in liver transplantation (LT), influencing referral pathways, waitlist outcomes, donor organ allocation, and post-transplant survival. Differences in body size, model for end-stage liver disease (MELD)-based prioritization, disease etiology, and structural healthcare factors have contributed to disparities in surgical access and organ distribution worldwide. Recent policy modifications, including MELD 3.0 implementation, aim to mitigate longstanding inequities. AIM: To synthesize global evidence from 2000-2026 evaluati

Who is placed, heard, and seen? Gendered opportunity pathways in Ghanaian senior high school choirs and marching bands.

Choirs and marching bands are important sites of musical learning, school representation, and youth leadership in Ghanaian senior high schoo … d identity safety. Findings are interpreted as exploratory and associative. The study suggests that gender equity in school music ensembles requires attention not only to access, but also to allocation procedures, visibility opportunities, feedback practices, and identity-safe rehearsal climates.

Representation matters: advocating for increased diversity in the pediatric surgical workforce to address health inequity.

Equitable health is the state in which all have the opportunity to attain full health potential and no disadvantage from achieving this because of social position or another socially defined circumstance [1]. One measure of society is marked by how vulnerable populations, like children, are treated, including the right to achieve and access good health. Focusing on health equity helps to address the social determinants of health which can adversely affect pediatric care and threatens surgical outcomes for the most vulnerable children in society [1-5]. Inextricable from attaining health equity
