Hydrological inundation threshold regulates the carbon source-sink transition in unvegetated tidal flats.

Unvegetated tidal flats cover extensive areas of global coastlines, but their role in atmospheric CO2 exchange remains poorly understood. Here we investigate how hydrological regimes regulate carbon uptake in these ecosystems through a marsh organ experiment in the subtropical Zhangjiang Estuary, China that integrated sediment-atmosphere CO2 and CH4 flux measurements, porewater geochemistry, and metagenomic sequencing. We identified a site-specific hydrological transition in which sediment-atmosphere CO2 exchange shifted from a weak source to sustained net uptake under more frequent inundation

Redox-stratified macromolecule degradation supports microbial survival in the oligotrophic Kermadec Trench sediments.

Kermadec Trench is a hadal ecosystem in the South Pacific with the water depth 10,047 m. The trench bottom harbors a highly active and populated microbial community, despite the surface sediment is characterized as extremely pressurized, oligotrophic and with low oxygen concentration. It is intriguing, as well as technically challenging, to investigate the microbial adaptation strategies therein. Here we performed the in situ RNA fixation on sediment samples with the assistant of Fendouzhe manned submersible, to approach natural status of microbial metabolisms on both genomic and transcriptomi

Microplastic contamination in coastal environments: Assessing the role of rainfall and stormwater inputs.

Stormwater is increasingly recognised as a contributor to microplastic contamination in aquatic environments. Yet, the contribution of rainfall in flushing microplastics through urban drainage systems into coastal environments remains less quantified. In Australia and other urbanised areas worldwide, stormwater is discharged into coastal areas via river mouths, and directly onto beaches via concrete piped outlets. This study examined microplastic concentrations in stormwater discharged from engineered concrete outlets and natural river mouths before, during and after rain events along the Adel

A Bibliometric Analysis of Redox Species and Bio-Derived Electrodes for the Conversion of Petroleum-Contaminated Sediments into Bioelectricity.

The environmental crisis caused by hydrocarbon-contaminated sediment from the oil industry remains a pressing concern. While sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) offer a potential remediation strategy, they suffer from low power densities and high internal resistance, compounded by a lack of integrated knowledge on electrogenic bacteria. The methodology involved an analysis and systematic mapping of 933 documents retrieved from Scopus (2010-2026) using RStudio (R 4.3.1) with Bibliometrix (4.1.4), VOSviewer (1.6.20), and Plotly Studio (4.10.4), complemented by an analysis of system configurati

Effective nitrogen removal from coastal sediments at 10 °C using sediment microbial fuel cells.

Nitrogen pollution in cold coastal sediments has become increasingly prominent. Sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFC) are efficient at preventing ammonia release and hypoxia, but low temperature conditions may significantly limit their efficiency. In this study, two SMFC systems were constructed and evaluated for their performance and potential microbial functions associated with nitrogen removal at 10 °C and hypoxic conditions. The results showed that both systems achieved efficient nitrogen removal at low temperature, with ammonium (NH4+) removal efficiencies of approximately 84% in the water

How does moisture content regulate EPS dynamics and microbial interactions to mediate erosion resistance in sewer sediments?

The erosion resistance of sewer sediments is a key determinant of hydraulic efficiency and flood risks in urban drainage systems. In real sewer networks, sediment moisture content fluctuates substantially due to intermittent drainage, seasonal variation, and storm inflow pulses, yet its influence on microbially mediated sediment stability remains poorly understood. This study systematically investigated how moisture content regulates extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) dynamics, microbial community structure, and microbial interactions in sewer sediments across a moisture range of 10.10-5

Characteristic and resource potential of water soluble lithium in lithium-rich salt lake sediments from Qaidam Basin, China.

This study investigates geochemical characteristics and resource potential of water-soluble lithium in lithium-rich salt lake sediments from the Qaidam Basin, focusing on the East Taijinar Salt Lake and Bieletan area. Through X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis (ICP-OES), and laser particle size analysis (LPSA), sediment samples were analyzed to assess mineral composition, lithium distribution and its occurrence forms. Results reveal distinct vertical zonation: lithium, boron, and potassium peak in clay-rich layers, contrasting with lower concentrations in halite-dominated layers. Regi

[Differential Responses of Indigenous Microorganisms to Salinity Changes in Lake Sediments: A Case Study of the Baiyangdian Lake and Qinghai Lake].

The impact of salinity stress on methane-oxidizing microorganisms in lake sediments has been recognized as influential in altering both the community structure and function, thereby affecting methane emissions in lake water. Denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) is a crucial process within the lake sediment, involving a consortium of known DAMO characteristic microorganisms and associated carbon and nitrogen-transforming functional bacteria. However, the variations in DAMO flora in lake sediments under diverse salinity conditions and their implications on greenhouse gas production re

Exploring methanogenic archaea and their thermal responses in the glacier-fed stream sediments of Rongbuk River basin, Mt. Everest.

Glacier-fed streams (GFS) are emergent sources of greenhouse gas methane, and methanogenic archaea in sediments contribute largely to stream methane emissions. However, little is known about the methanogenic communities in GFS sediments and their key environmental driving factors. This study analyzed stream sediments from the Rongbuk River basin on Mt. Everest for methanogenic communities and their temperature responses through anaerobic microcosm incubations at 5°C and 15°C. Diverse methanogens were identified, including acetoclastic, hydrogenotrophic, and hydrogen-dependent methylotrophic ty

Enhanced Carbon Sequestration Potential Following Sediment Dredging in River Ecosystems: Insights into CO2 Fluxes, Phytoplankton, and Carbon Fixation Pathway Responses.

River systems play crucial roles in the global carbon balance; however, the environmental consequences of sediment dredging on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and carbon sequestration potential remain poorly understood. This study presents the first systematic investigation linking sediment dredging to long-term carbon sequestration dynamics in river ecosystems, addressing critical uncertainties in anthropogenic impacts on aquatic carbon balance. Over a three-year period, dredging significantly altered CO2 flux (fCO2) and dissolved CO2 partial pressure (pCO2), with pronounced seasonal variabili

Influence of the source and molecular weights on sulfathiazole/sulfadiazine binding in sedimentary dissolved organic matter.

Sedimental dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in the migration of antibiotics in a lake environment, which is strongly associated with its physicochemical properties influenced by temporal and spatial variations. This study systematically investigated the binding behavior of sulfathiazole (ST) and sulfadiazine (SD) to DOM across different molecular weights (MWs) in sediments from Poyang Lake using multiple spectroscopic techniques. Results showed that the MW fractions of DOM from the onset of the dry season were higher than those before flooding. Additionally, key carbon param

Vertically stratified microbial diversity and keystone species driving element cycling in the Magellan seamount sediments.

Deep-sea polymetallic nodules, rich in cobalt, nickel and titanium, are valuable for electronics, aerospace and energy industries. However, the vertical distribution and ecological functions of prokaryotic communities in sediments beneath nodules from the Magellan seamounts, a unique microbial habitat characterized by ultra-slow sedimentation rates (0.4-4 mm ky-1) and heterogeneous metal gradients, remain poorly characterized. In our research, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and metagenomic analyses of sediment cores (0-20 cm) from the western Pacific polymetallic nodule province revealed st

Flourishing chemosynthetic life at the greatest depths of hadal trenches.

Hadal trenches, some of the Earth's least explored and understood environments, have long been proposed to harbour chemosynthesis-based communities1,2. Despite increasing attention, actual documentation of such communities has been exceptionally rare3,4. Here we report the discovery of the deepest and the most extensive chemosynthesis-based communities known to exist on Earth during an expedition to the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench and the western Aleutian Trench using the manned submersible Fendouzhe. The communities dominated by siboglinid Polychaeta and Bivalvia span a distance of 2,500 km at dep

Shallow-lake sediments release nutrients by complete destratification events.

The development of phytoplankton communities in hypereutrophic shallow lakes, often used for aquaculture, is not fully understood and can sometimes be unpredictable. Focusing on the abiotic factors that regulate their succession, we recorded short-term mixing events in a shallow lake and examined their relationship with nutrient release from sediments in the lab. In situ measurements reveal a dynamic cycle of mixing and stratification during summer, when the lake mostly stratifies during the day and mixes at night, depending on wind conditions. The studied lake was stratified 45% of the time a

Microbial drivers of biogeochemical cycles in deep sediments of the Kathiawar Peninsula Gulfs of India.

Deep marine sediments are rich in microbial diversity, which holds metabolic repertoire to modulate biogeochemical cycles on a global scale. We undertook the environmental microbiome inhabiting the Gulf of Kathiawar Peninsula as a model system to understand the potential involvement of the deep marine sediment microbial community and as a cohort in the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur biogeochemical cycles. These gulfs are characterized by dynamic tidal variations, diverse sediment textures, and nutrient-rich waters, driven by coastal processes and the interaction between natural coastal dynamics

The role of tidal range and seawater pollution in shaping mangrove biomass and carbon stocks.

Understanding the mechanisms that regulate carbon accumulation in mangrove ecosystems remains critical for supporting coastal climate-mitigation strategies. In this study, we integrate high-resolution airborne LiDAR data, sediment geochemistry, and hydrodynamic modeling to quantify the multi-scale controls on biomass and sediment carbon stabilization across 14 representative mangrove stands in subtropical and tropical China. Unlike previous regional assessments that emphasize latitudinal patterns, our approach focuses on how forest structural complexity, root-zone redox conditions, and hydrolo

Seasonal dynamics of bacterial communities in a highly polluted coastal lagoon: Dominance of sulfur bacteria in response to elevated H2S levels.

This study aims to evaluate the effects of different environmental gradients and seasonality on the bacterial communities of an impacted coastal lagoon. While the community compositions were homogenous in surface waters with the dominance of Candidatus Pelagibacter, diversity showed high vertical variation due to salinity and dissolved oxygen gradients. Anoxic conditions occurred at deeper parts of the lagoon, particularly at 14 m and 18 m, where nutrient enrichment and high H2S concentration were detected resulting in a shift of bacterial community to anoxic species. A spatio-temporal sand mining pressure index to support the management of estuary health.

Sand mining is ubiquitous given the universal demand for aggregate materials for construction and other manufacturing industries. This demand is mostly met by mining fluvially derived sediment from rivers and estuaries, resulting in extensive, enduring changes to the morphological, physico-chemical and biological characteristics of aquatic ecosystems. The extent of these activities in South Africa is largely unknown due to the dynamic, ephemeral, and often clandestine operations, which are mainly located in remote or inaccessible areas. This study used freely available remote sensing imagery t
