Travel associated human coccidioidomycosis in Germany 2011-2023.

This study reviews proven coccidioidomycosis cases in Germany associated with travel between 2011 and 2023 to endemic regions. We characterize clinical presentation, diagnostic practices, antifungal susceptibility, and molecular epidemiology. Fifteen human cases were confirmed by culture (12 cases) and histology (3 cases), with infections caused by Coccidioides posadasii (10 cases) and C. immitis (2 cases). Patients ranged from 23 to 82 years old, mostly without significant comorbidities. Clinical manifestations included pulmonary (6 cases), CNS (2 cases), and disseminated disease (3 cases). S…

Fatal Pneumocephalus Caused by Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae, Germany.

We report a fatal case of pneumocephalus in Germany caused by hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae sequence type 23, confirmed by using clinical, histopathologic, and genomic analyses. The patient reported no travel history, suggesting local emergence. This unusual case reveals an unclear pathogen prevalence and demonstrates the need for increased awareness of global spread.

Hodgkin Lymphoma after Disseminated Mycobacterium genavense Infection, Germany.

Mycobacterium genavense infection, a rare nontuberculous mycobacteria infection, occurs in heavily immunocompromised patients (i.e., those with advanced HIV disease, genetic disorders, or acquired immunologic disorders and those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy). We report a case of disseminated M. genavense infection preceding Hodgkin lymphoma in a patient without obvious risk factors for this infection.

Increased detection of enterovirus A71 infections, Germany, 2019.

We report on the increased circulation of enterovirus A71 in Germany in 2019. Strains were mainly identified in hospitalised patients with suspected aseptic meningitis/encephalitis. Molecular analysis showed co-circulation of EV-A71 sub-genogroups C1 and C4, a signal for physicians and public health authorities to include/intensify EV diagnostic in patients showing signs of aseptic meningitis, encephalitis or acute flaccid paralysis/myelitis.

Mitochondrial genotyping of Fascioloides magna from Bavaria, Germany.

In last few years, a great effort has been made to understand genetic interrelationships of European and North American populations of giant liver fluke Fascioloides magna (Trematoda, Fasciolidae). In Europe, spatial distribution of this parasite is evidently dynamic and ongoing process since new F. magna populations have constantly been emerging. Most recently, occurrence of F. magna in red deer (Cervus elaphus), sika deer (Cervus nippon), fallow deer (Dama dama), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), and wild boar (Sus scrofa) was reported from north-eastern Bavaria in Germany. Fascioloides magna …

Increased prevalence of Trichinella spp., northeastern Germany, 2008.

In 2008, a Trichinella spp. outbreak occurred on a small family-owned pig farm in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in northeastern Germany. To obtain epidemiologic information on this outbreak, we determined that after 2005 the prevalence of Trichinella spp. in wild boars has increased in this region of Germany. We discuss the potential role of the raccoon dog in the increase in Trichinella spp. prevalence in the sylvatic cycle in this region. We believe that this increase could pose a threat to pigs kept in back yard conditions, and we provide recommendations to ensure public health safety.

Neonatal symptomatic thromboembolism in Germany: two year survey.

AIMS: To determine the incidence of neonatal thromboembolism in Germany. METHODS: Diagnostic imaging techniques, therapeutic modalities, and short term outcome were evaluated in a prospective nationwide two year case registry study. RESULTS: The reported incidence of symptomatic neonatal thromboembolism, diagnosed in most cases with Doppler ultrasonography, was 5.1 per 100000 births, with a total of 79 cases registered: renal venous thrombosis (n = 35); venous thrombosis (n = 25); and arterial vascular occlusion (n = 19). Fifty seven of 79 thromboses were associated with additional risk fact…

[Current dermatology guidelines in Germany: selected clinically relevant recommendations].

Dermatological guidelines represent an essential foundation for evidence-based diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of skin diseases. In Germany, they are primarily developed under the leadership of the German Dermatological Society (DDG) in collaboration with the Professional Association of German Dermatologists (BVDD), in accordance with the methodological standards of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF), and are regularly updated. In 2025 and 2026, numerous new or substantially revised guidelines were published, covering a broad spectrum of dermatological d…

Prevalence of Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Perfusion Staff in Germany.

Background: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are highly prevalent among healthcare workers, particularly nurses, with reported prevalence rates ranging from 57% to 93%. Perfusionists are highly specialized healthcare professionals responsible for operating heart-lung machines during cardiac surgery. To date, the prevalence of MSDs in this professional group has not been systematically investigated. To address this gap, perfusionists in Germany were surveyed regarding MSDs. Methods: The German version of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was administered. Pearson's correlation and …

Human Lactococcus garvieae Bloodstream Infection Complicated by Spondylodiscitis, Germany.

Lactococcus garvieae bloodstream infection in a woman in Germany resulted in spondylodiscitis and bioprosthetic mitral valve endocarditis. Six weeks of ceftriaxone followed by 10 days of doxycycline led to sustained clinical and microbiological resolution. This case highlights the need for thorough diagnostic testing and individualized, shared decision-making in infective endocarditis cases.

[Fungal keratitis in Germany : Diagnostics, conservative and microsurgical treatment].

Fungal keratitis is still a relatively rare but very serious ophthalmological condition with a potentially vision-threatening course, possibly including even loss of the eye. Similar to acanthamoeba keratitis, it is often initially misdiagnosed with the slit lamp. For more than 20 years an increase in the incidence of fungal keratitis has been observed, also in Germany possibly due to the increased use of soft contact lenses and climate change. This article provides an overview of the typical clinical signs and symptoms of keratomycosis and presents the latest findings in the field of diagnost…

Addressing diagnostic delays in inflammatory bowel diseases in Germany.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis, are chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract that necessitate timely diagnosis to prevent complications and improve patient outcomes. Despite advancements in medical knowledge and diagnostic techniques, significant diagnostic delays persist, particularly in CD. The study by Blüthner et al, published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, elucidates the diagnostic delays experienced by German patients with IBD and identifies key risk factors contributing to these delays.

Education-based differences in alcohol health literacy in Germany.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol health literacy is critical for informed consumer decision making but has yet received limited attention in public health research. We therefore seek to measure alcohol health literacy and its educational distribution in Germany. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we developed and applied a brief nine-item questionnaire on alcohol health literacy in an adult convenience sample (n = 391; February to April 2023). The association of educational attainment with 'insufficient' alcohol health literacy was tested in adjusted logistic regression models. RESULTS: Insufficie…
