A new instrument for the assessment of the different levels of gesture processing, as identified by recent cognitive models of apraxia, is presented. The battery comprises thirteen tasks -- eight assess the production of meaningful gestures both on command and on imitation, four tasks assess the ability to recognize and identify gestures, and one task assesses imitation of meaningless gestures. The battery encompasses a novel test of gesture production on visual command. A total of 60 healthy British volunteers were tested with the entire battery. On the whole, participants made more errors wi

BACKGROUND: Hand-leading (HL) gestures used to obtain assistance or direct another person's actions are often reported at elevated rates in autistic children. Yet, their developmental significance and relation to children's broader cognitive and adaptive profiles remain poorly understood. This study examined the presence and developmental correlates of HL gestures in a sample of toddlers and young children referred for autism evaluation.
METHODS: Participants were 156 toddlers and young children aged 18-48 months (111 autistic [86 male, 25 female]; 45 non-autistic with other developmental con

During early vocabulary growth, infants use single words to express complete ideas. Requests ("milk") and protests ("no!") are fundamental ways that infants communicate their needs. However, understanding what an infant wants from a single word can be challenging. Caregivers likely rely on infants' gestures and actions to interpret single-word utterances. How common are requests and protests during everyday activities? To what extent do infants accompany their requests and protests with gestures (e.g., points to request) and/or actions (e.g., flailing arms to protest)? Are caregivers more like

Limb apraxia, a deficit of planning voluntary gestures, is most frequently caused by damage to the left hemisphere, where, according to an influential neurofunctional model, gestures are planned, before being executed through the motor cortex of the hemisphere contralateral to the acting hand. We used anodal transcranial direct current stimulation delivered to the left posterior parietal cortex (PPC), the right motor cortex (M1), and a sham stimulation condition, to modulate the ability of six left-brain-damaged patients with ideomotor apraxia, and six healthy control subjects, to imitate hand

PURPOSE: This project compared how children and caregivers use gestures and objects during play interactions and their relationship to input in the form of nouns and verbs. Observations of play interactions between children with primary or secondary language impairment and their caregivers were used to determine these connections and whether there was any differentiation in how children or caregivers used gestures and/or objects along with models of nouns and verbs within the play context.
METHOD: Observations of parent-child dyads were recorded at a local children's museum. All dyads include

We describe the case of a 58-years-old right-handed women suffering from an occipital-parietal lesion. The administration of a cognitively based assessment tool for limb praxis (Batterie d'Evaluation des Praxies, B.E.P., Peigneux and Van der Linden, 1998) demonstrated bilateral visuo-imitative apraxia. Gesture production was mainly characterised by spatial, errors, and imitation of meaningful gestures was worse than their pantomime on verbal command. Moreover, the imitation of meaningless gestures and their reproduction on a manikin were worse than imitation of their matched meaningful gesture

INTRODUCTION: Gestures are important for nonverbal communication and were shown to be impaired in schizophrenia. Two categories of gestures can be differentiated: pantomime on verbal command and imitation of seen gestures. There is evidence that the neural basis of these domains may be distinct, pantomime being critically dependent on prefrontal cortex function. The aim of the study was to investigate gestural deficits in schizophrenia and their association with frontal lobe function and motor performance.
METHODS: In 30 schizophrenia patients, gesture performance was assessed by the comprehe

Spinal cord injury (SCI) has a devastating impact on the lives of both those with the injury and those surrounding them. Myoelectric control systems have the potential to help control complex assistive technologies and enhance independence for the users, but do not take into consideration the diversity of neurological impairment observed following SCI. The objectives of this study were: 1) demonstrate that optimizing the design parameters of a myoelectric control system (number of gestures, gesture rate) for each participant can increase the information transfer rate (ITR), and 2) characterize

BACKGROUND: Gesticulation (gestures accompanying speech) and pantomime (gestures in the absence of speech) can each be comprehensible. Little is known about the differences between these two gesture modes in people with aphasia.
AIMS: To discover whether there are differences in the communicative use of gesticulation and pantomime in QH, a person with severe fluent aphasia.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: QH performed two tasks: naming objects and retelling a story. He did this once in a verbal condition (enabling gesticulation) and once in a pantomime condition. For both conditions, the comprehensibi

Apraxia is a disorder that involves impaired ability to execute previously learned movements that cannot be attributed to basic sensory or motor disturbances. A thorough assessment of apraxia typically entails both pantomiming and imitation of transitive (tool-related), intransitive (communication-related), and meaningless gestures, presented in an array of different, process-dependent sensory conditions. Precise and detailed assessment tools are often time-consuming and a shorter screening tool may be desirable for efficient surveillance of this disorder in stroke patients. In the present stu

Previous examinations of manual performance asymmetries have utilised relatively simple movements such as goal-directed aiming and rapid finger-tapping. In the present research, three-dimensional kinematic analyses were employed to examine manual asymmetries in the production of transitive limb gestures. Transitive limb gestures involve the use of tools and/or objects and are complex movements used in the evaluation of limb apraxia. Ten healthy right hand dominant participants produced two transitive limb gestures in response to verbal command both with (tool-use) and without (pantomime) the a

The authors have studied the bucco-facial apraxia (BFA) in 20 aphasic patients, examining 10 isolated oral gesture (IOG) and 10 combined oral gesture (COG). The heterogeneity of the BFA is indicated by the qualitative analysis of the types of errors in COG in relation to IOG. It is probably that the BFA due to the posterior lesions might base on the motor programming disorders of oral gestures, and that the BFA due to the anterior lesions on the motor realization disorders of oral gestures. It remains unsolved whether there is a continuity or some varieties between two types of BFA.

On an influential model of limb praxis, ideomotor apraxia results from damage to stored gesture representations or disconnection of representations from sensory input or motor output (Heilman & Gonzalez Rothi, 1993; Gonzalez Rothi et al., 1991). We report data from a patient with progressive ideomotor limb apraxia which cannot be readily accommodated by this model. The patient, BG, is profoundly impaired in gesturing to command, to sight of object, and to imitation, but gestures nearly normally with tool in hand and recognizes gestures relatively well. In addition, performance is profoundly im

We assessed the prediction that object structural cues could benefit the learning of object-action relationships in ideomotor apraxia (IMA). A total of 15 patients with left-hemisphere stroke, 11 of whom exhibited IMA, and 10 healthy subjects were trained to match novel gestures to novel tool pictures that were either High- or Low-Afforded by their associated tools. Learning was assessed with recognition and production tests. Only IMA patients demonstrated better recognition of High- than Low-Afforded gestures, and their recognition of High-Afforded gestures was statistically comparable to the

In this work, we describe a new method to detect periods of eating by tracking wrist motion during everyday life. Eating uses hand-to-mouth gestures for ingestion, each of which lasts a few seconds. Previous works have detected these gestures individually and then aggregated them to identify meals. The novelty of our approach is that we analyze a much longer window (0.5-15 min) using a convolutional neural network. Longer windows can contain other gestures related to eating, such as cutting or manipulating food, preparing foods for consumption, and resting between ingestion events. The context

Imitation tests encompassing intermingled meaningful and meaningless items are normally used to assess ideomotor apraxia, implicitly assuming that they would test the lexical and the non-lexical route, respectively. However, these mixed lists might induce a "list composition" effect similar to that found in word recognition studies where familiar material can be processed via the non-lexical route. This hypothesis was put to test by examining praxis skills of 23 left-hemisphere damaged patients using the same gestures in two formats: pure and mixed lists (i.e., meaningless or meaningful gestur

'Choral' speech or speaking in unison is an undeniable phenomenon that immediately induces fluent and natural sounding speech in almost all people who stutter, regardless of linguistic content, situation or audience size. We propose that the choral speech effect is a form direct imitation, a primitive and innate human capacity that is possibly mediated at the neuronal level by 'mirror neurons'. Mirror systems link observations and actions are considered by many to be a neuronal substrate for gestural language acquisition, as well as forming the basis for many learned behaviors, thus possibly p
