The epidemiology and public health importance of toxocariasis: a zoonosis of global importance.

Toxocariasis, caused by infection with larvae of Toxocara canis, and to a lesser extent by Toxocara cati and other ascaridoid species, manifests in humans in a range of clinical syndromes. These include visceral and ocular larva migrans, neurotoxocariasis and covert or common toxocariasis. Toxocara canis is one of the most widespread public health and economically important zoonotic parasitic infections humans share with dogs, cats and wild canids, particularly foxes. This neglected disease has been shown through seroprevalence studies to be especially prevalent among children from socio-econo

[Global health situation with emphasis on selected parasitic infections in Poland].

The evolution of some attempts to improve the global health situation is reviewed and realisation of the declaration of Millenium Developmental Goals is being discussed. Improved health care and education have been finally accepted as the mile stones of the global development. However, the obstacles to achieve better global health are as follows: global health services crisis, optimal health development strategy in various countries still discussed, insufficient population education and involvement in health matters. In Poland endemic malaria and Taenia solium infections have been eradicated. …

Global variations in funding and use of hemodialysis accesses: an international report using the ISN Global Kidney Health Atlas.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of contemporary data describing global variations in vascular access for hemodialysis (HD). We used the third iteration of the International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA) to highlight differences in funding and availability of hemodialysis accesses used for initiating HD across world regions. METHODS: Survey questions were directed at understanding the funding modules for obtaining vascular access and types of accesses used to initiate dialysis. An electronic survey was sent to national and regional key stakeholders affiliated with the

Rediscovering cytisine: Why the WHO's decision matters for global public health.

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the inclusion of cytisine in its Model List of Essential Medicines (EMLs). Owing to its efficacy, tolerability profile, and low cost, cytisine represents a valuable addition to the smoking cessation toolkit. This followed approval by the UK MHRA, with regulatory review by the US FDA in process. However, this milestone came over half a century after an initial large-scale randomized controlled trial demonstrated its efficacy. The recognition of cytisine is both a triumph for global health equity and an indictment of the political, economic…

Global health perspectives on diet patterns micronutrients and climato-economic factors.

Global dietary patterns and micronutrient deficiencies are key modifiable risk factors for disease, with complex relationships to geographical, climatic, and economic conditions. This study evaluates the global disease burden attributable to these factors. Using the Köppen climate classification and World Bank income groups as a descriptive framework, we analyze the geographical distribution of this burden. Dietary risks and nutrient deficiencies collectively account for 10.32% of global deaths and 5.74% of DALYs. High sodium (2.65%), low fruit (2.40%), and low whole-grain intake (2.21%) are l

Moral distress of primary health care workers during the global pandemic.

This study investigated the prevalence and intensity of moral distress among family health workers in Istanbul during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as its association with the perceived ethical climate within family health centers. This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in Istanbul between November 2021 and June 2022. Using Turkish versions of the "Measure of Moral Distress for Healthcare Professionals" and "Hospital Ethical Climate Survey-Shortened" scales, data were collected from three districts with the highest and three with the lowest mortality rates due to infectious dis

Plastid-Based Production of Recombinant Proteins: Advancing Toward Global Health Applications.

Plastid-based production of recombinant proteins has emerged as a transformative platform for global health applications, offering high-yield, low-cost, and scalable alternatives to conventional microbial and mammalian systems. Chloroplasts facilitate exceptional transgene expression (often exceeding 40% of total soluble protein (TSP)), due to leveraging high genome copy numbers per cell, precise multi-gene stacking, minimal position effects, and maternal inheritance for biocontainment. Critically, recent advances have progressed beyond proof-of-concept. Edible crops, such as lettuce, have bee…

Evaluating global health programmes targeting under-5 mortality: problems and recommendations.

Reducing the under-5 mortality rate (U5MR) is a key public health priority and remains a persistent challenge in low- and middle-income countries. Many interventions have been developed in attempts to lower U5MR through partnerships between governments, funding partners, researchers, product developers and non-governmental organisations. The well-intentioned desire to use data to set priorities has led to many large-scale evaluations that specify U5MR as a primary outcome. The results of these evaluations are then used to inform investments, policies and advocacy efforts. While important insig

Anthropogenic nitrogen impacts on global PM2.5-O3 co-pollution health burden.

The growing recognition of the adverse health impacts posed by ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) has driven global efforts to implement stricter regulations on reactive nitrogen emissions, including nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia (NH3). Nevertheless, effective mitigation strategies remain constrained by the gap between precursor emissions and health effects, especially in regions facing compounded PM2.5-O3 pollution. This work models the synergistic health burden from PM2.5-O3 co-exposure and its complex responses to anthropogenic nitrogen emission controls. Our modelin

COVID-19 in retrospect: Public health lessons from a global crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic, emerging in late 2019, rapidly evolved into a global health crisis of unprecedented scale. Initially marked by widespread transmission and severe illness, the pandemic overwhelmed healthcare systems, disrupted economies, and exposed deep-rooted inequalities. Over 775 million cases and an estimated 18-33 million global deaths were recorded by 2024. The crisis illuminated critical vulnerabilities in pandemic preparedness, healthcare infrastructure, and public health communication. Key lessons included the need for resilient supply chains, robust data systems, equitable hea…

Hypervirulent and carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae: A global public health threat.

The evolution of hypervirulent and carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae can be categorized into three main patterns: the evolution of KL1/KL2-hvKp strains into CR-hvKp, the evolution of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (CRKp) strains into hv-CRKp, and the acquisition of hybrid plasmids carrying carbapenem resistance and virulence genes by classical K. pneumoniae (cKp). These strains are characterized by multi-drug resistance, high virulence, and high infectivity. Currently, there are no effective methods for treating and surveillance this pathogen. In addition, the continuous horizonta
