BACKGROUND: Lingual ASPS is extremely rare and aggressive tumor. rearrangement is typically detected in ASPS patients using FISH analysis. … wever, molecular analysis using FISH was negative for TFE3 rearrangement. Patient underwent partial glossectomy with postoperative radiotherapy.
CONCLUSION: Clinical and pathological correlation of ASPS is very useful to reach a proper diagnosis.

We report a 10-month-old girl who, at 4 months, developed a small, reddish, plaquelike lesion on her tongue. This lesion began to enlarge ra … s then refused this treatment. After the tumor size was reduced by chemotherapy, a partial anterior glossectomy was performed. After 30 months of follow-up she has had no recurrences.

The repair of small to medium-sized tongue defects is controversial among surgeons. This can be achieved using various local, regional, and microvascular free flaps. In this Technical Note, the authors introduce a new classification system for tongue defects based on the subunit principle and describe a technique using a modified local rhomboid flap, which is aimed at restoring both the volume and function of the anterior tongue.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Tongue base reduction surgery is the only minimally invasive technique that can be performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, especially to treat obstructive sleep apnea caused by hypopharyngeal obstruction. Studies reported that various devices could be used for tongue base reduction, but comparisons of these methods are limited in the literature. Our study aimed to compare the histological effects of tongue base reduction methods performed with the Celon radiofrequency, monopolar cautery, Coblator, and Sutter devices on the tissue.
METHODS: This study i

PURPOSE: Muscle groups within the tongue in healthy and diseased populations show different behaviors during speech. Visualizing and quantif … ed MRI. Data were acquired, and this pipeline was run on a cohort of eight healthy controls and two glossectomy patients.
RESULTS: The crossing muscle fibers reconstructed by the deep network show orthogonal patterns. The strain analysis results demonstrate consistency of muscle behaviors among some healthy controls during speech production. The patients sho …

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the potential utility of intra-oral ultrasound (IOUS) in guiding deep margin clearance and measuring depth of invasion (DOI) of oral tongue carcinomas (OTC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review of consecutive patients with T1-T3 OTC who underwent intraoperative ultrasound-guided resection and a comparator group that had undergone resection without the use of IOUS both by a single surgeon. Data was extracted from operative, pathology and radiology reports. Deep margins and DOI were reviewed by a dedicated head and neck pathologist. Correlation between h

BACKGROUND: To propose a classification of transoral base of tongue (BOT) procedures able to provide uniform terminology in order to better define postoperative results.
METHODS: The classification resulted from the consensus of the different authors and is based on anatomical and surgical principles.
RESULTS: The classification comprises three types of BOT resections: type 1 is the resection of the entire lingual tonsil to the muscular plane; type 2 is performed by removing the entire lingual tonsil and part of BOT muscles; type 3 is performed by removing the entire lingual tonsil and the e

Teratomas of the tongue are rare, and often accompany other anomalies within the head and neck. We describe a combination of anomalies in a 6-week-old infant with teratoma and bifid tip of the tongue, severe tongue tie, and polydactyly. The teratoma was excised and the tongue tie released with no complications.

To reduce a large amount of mandibular setback and to prevent pharyngeal airway space narrowing when correcting a severe anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy, a mandibular step osteotomy is often combined with 2-stage orthognathic surgery. This case report describes a successful 2-stage orthognathic treatment combined with a mandibular step osteotomy. A 20-year-old man had severe mandibular protrusion, facial asymmetry, and macroglossia. Phase 1 surgery included the mandibular step osteotomy and a partial glossectomy; then we performed phase 2 surgery with a 2-piece LeFort I segmental osteotom…

We present a case which describes a 29-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus who was treated aggressively with cytotoxic immunosuppression. Five years later and approximately 12 weeks pregnant, she is confirmed as having carcinoma of the tongue. Not wishing to consider termination of her pregnancy, she underwent surgical resection, which included partial glossectomy with microvascular reconstruction. Good oral function (speech and swallowing) was restored within 2 weeks. The pregnancy proceeded relatively uneventfully to 37 weeks gestation when proteinuric hypertension necessitated …

Pediatric patients with persistent obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) after adenotonsillectomy often have additional sites of upper airway obstruction such as the tongue base or larynx. Sleep endoscopy and cross-sectional, dynamic imaging can be used to direct the surgical management of persistent OSA. The tongue base is one of the most common sites of obstruction in children with persistent OSA, especially for patients with Trisomy 21. Lingual tonsillectomy, tongue suspension, and/or posterior midline glossectomy may be used to address lingual tonsil hypertrophy and tongue base obstruction. Epiglo…

Head and neck surgeons must have a thorough knowledge of head and neck vascular anatomy and its variations. This case report documents a variation in the superior thyroid artery encountered during a neck dissection and discusses the surrounding literature. A 55-year-old female with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue underwent a partial glossectomy, right level I-IV neck dissection and reconstruction with a radial forearm free flap. During the procedure, an arterial branch was encountered arising 2-3cm caudal to the common carotid bifurcation. This variant branch was shown to represent the s…

The patient was submitted to glossectomy under general anesthesia using the "keyhole" technique, with objective to provide reduction of the lingual length and width. INTRODUCTION: This article presents the case of a 26-year-old woman with tongue cancer. The median age at the diagnosis of the tongue's cancer is 61 years. Only approximately 2% of patients are diagnosed before the age of 35.
CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient survived acute myeloid leukemia (AML) before her second year. She had been having recurrent, poorly healing aphtae on the right side of the tongue for a period of months before the symptoms of the tongue cancer appeared. As a treatment a partial glossectomy was conducted on the right side and a neck dissection of levels I-III. Than a recons…

BACKGROUND: Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a congenital disorder that involves a somatic overgrowth during the patient's first years of life. Exomphalos, macroglossia and gigantism are the main clinical symptoms.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors describe a 15-year follow-up in a patient with BWS. They focus on a multidisciplinary approach to treating the patient's oral manifestations from age 9 months. The approach included an initial physiotherapy treatment, a partial glossectomy, a first phase of orthopedic treatment with a tongue crib and chin cap, and a second phase of orthodontic trea…

Postoperative macroglossia is a very rare complication associated with neurosurgical procedures. There have only been 16 cases reported in t … yndrome with basilar invagination preoperatively. Postoperative macroglossia was treated by partial glossectomy, because medical management (anti-edema therapy) failed. This complication is a life-threatening complication and must be treated promptly. Diverse etiologic mechanisms are discussed along with preventive and therapeutic measures.

Subtotal or total glossectomies performed for malignancies or other afflictions of the tongue are fraught with great disabling problems postoperatively. Recently the introduction of myocutaneous flaps has aroused new interest in surgical procedures to reconstruct the tongue following major resections. A new approach to functional reconstruction of the tongue is presented utilizing the sternocleidomastoid myocutaneous flap based superiorly. Neurorrhaphy between the hypoglossal nerve on the resected side of the tongue and the nerve to the sternocleidomastoid muscle is easily achieved without und
