In vitro susceptibilities of oral bacterial isolates to spiramycin.

Four hundred strains of oral bacteria were tested for their susceptibility to spiramycin. Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and most species of Lactobacillus were resistant to the antibiotic. All strains of cariogenic Streptococcus mutans and most strains of bacterial species implicated in adult chronic periodontitis (Bacteroides gingivalis, B. intermedius, and Treponema denticola) were susceptible to spiramycin.

Evaluation of biopolymer-producing bacteria deposited in the Microbiological Culture Collection.

Bacteria are important organisms in various industrial processes due to their ability to produce a wide range of enzymes. In this context, the present work evaluates 100 bacteria deposited in the Microbiological Culture Collection of Amazonas State University - UEA, regarding the production of biopolymers such as Polyhydroxyalkanoate - PHA. For the production of biopolymers, a mineral medium was used and staining was done with Sudan black B and Nile Red for observation by optical and confocal microscopy. The production of biopolymers was carried out in 50 mL aliquots using mineral medium, with

Unveiling nanotubes-mediated communication: Enterococcus faecalis countering Salmonella ser. Typhi - In vitro and In vivo insights.

Bacteria communicate with each other through contact-dependent and contact-independent mechanisms. While certain contact-dependent mechanisms, such as Type IV and Type VI, have received considerable attention, nanotubes-mediated communication among gut bacteria remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the presence of nanotube production in both gut commensal and gut pathogenic bacteria. And also aims to show how Enterococcus faecalis utilizes nanotubes to combat Salmonella ser. Typhi (S. Typhi), a pathogen in the gut. The research findings suggest that the formation

Laboratory detection of anaerobic bacteremia.

The possibility that mycobacteria may be found in blood cultures is a relatively recent discovery. Immunocompromised patients, especially those with advanced HIV infection, are often mycobacteremic with Mycobacterium tuberculosis or M. avium complex. Laboratory methods provide sensitive detection options for these pathogens.

Potential Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria with Anti-Penicillium expansum Activity from Different Species of Tunisian Edible Snails.

This study aimed to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from the digestive tract, meat and slime of edible snails (Helix lucorum, Helix aspersa and Eobania vermiculata) and investigate their antagonistic activity against Penicillium expansum. They were then characterized for their probiotic potential. Among 900 bacterial isolates, 47 LAB exhibiting anti-P. expansum activity were identified through matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) as Levilactobacillus brevis (25), Lactococcus lactis (3), Enterococcus faecium (12), Enterococcus faecalis (

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Properties of a Ciprofloxacin and PAMAM-dendrimer Conjugate.

Infections caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotics are an increasing problem. Multivalent antibiotics could be a solution. In the present study, a covalent conjugate between Ciprofloxacin and a G0-PAMAM dendrimer has been synthesized and tested against clinically relevant Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The conjugate has antimicrobial activity and there is a positive dendritic effect compared to Ciprofloxacin itself.

Bacteria surface charge varies across species and is independent of cell wall type.

Variation in the surface charge of the cell envelope across bacterial species is not well understood. The absence of systematic investigations comparing taxonomically diverse bacterial species has led to confusion about the influence of cell wall type (i.e. Gram-negative or Gram-positive bacteria) on surface charge. In this study, dynamic light scattering (DLS) was used to determine surface charge via zeta potential measurements of 12 phylogenetically diverse bacterial species spanning four bacterial phyla. Surface charge of six Gram-positive species (Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus thermophi…

[Comparison of BACTEC and BacT/ALERT systems in evaluation of blood cultures].

Automatized blood culture systems are used widely due to the characteristics such as lower contamination risks, shorter incubation periods and higher isolation rates. In this study, BACTEC 9050 (Becton Dickinson, Ireland) and BacT/ALERT 120 (Organon Teknika Corp, USA) systems were compared for the evaluation of blood cultures obtained from 222 hospitalized patients in intensive care units between September and December 2003. For this purpose, two blood samples obtained from each arms of patients, were inoculated into BACTEC plus aerobic/F (Becton Dickinson, Ireland) and BacT/ALERT FA/aerobic (

Tetrachloroethene-dehalogenating bacteria.

Tetrachloroethene is a frequent groundwater contaminant often persisting in the subsurface environments. It is recalcitrant under aerobic conditions because it is in a highly oxidized state and is not readily susceptible to oxidation. Nevertheless, at least 15 organisms from different metabolic groups, viz. halorespirators (9), acetogens (2), methanogens (3) and facultative anaerobes (2), that are able to metabolize tetrachloroethene have been isolated as axenic cultures to-date. Some of these organisms couple dehalo-genation to energy conservation and utilize tetrachloroethene as the only sou

A bacteriological and histological evaluation of 58 periapical lesions.

Periapical tissue from 58 cases requiring periapical surgery was examined histologically and cultured for the presence of microbes. Twenty-nine had a possible oral cavity communication and 29 did not. Approximately one-half of each biopsy was submitted for culture while the other portion was examined histologically. Cultures were positive for the presence of bacteria in 51 of 58 cases while bacteria were seen histologically in only 8 of 58 cases. A total of 50 different species of bacteria were isolated from the 58 cultures of periapical tissue. Of 133 isolates, 87 were strict anaerobes, 37 we

Susceptibility of contemporary isolates to fosfomycin: a systematic review of the literature.

The aim of this review was to evaluate the susceptibility of contemporary Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria to fosfomycin. PubMed and Scopus databases were systematically searched to identify studies published in print or electronically from January 2010 until June 2015. In total, 84 studies were selected. Susceptibility to fosfomycin of Staphylococcus aureus ranged between 33.2% and 100% (frequency=91.7%, 95% confidence interval 88.7-94.9%), of Enterococcus spp. from 30% to 100% (Enterococcus faecium 92.6%, 85.2-100%; Enterococcus faecalis 96.8%, 92.5-100%), of extended-spectrum β-lact

[Antimicrobial susceptibility and frequency of occurrence of clinical blood isolates in Sfax-Tunisia (1993-1998)].

Antimicrobial susceptibility and frequency of occurrence of clinical blood isolates in Sfax-Tunisia (1993-1998). The choice of antimicrobial therapy for the treatment of bacteremia is often empirical and based on the knowledge of susceptibility profiles of the most common bacteria causing such infections. This study determines the bacterial etiology of bacteremic episodes and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns recorded at a teaching hospital, from January 1993 to December 1998. We collected 2979 strains responsible for bacteremia. Gram negative bacteria were predominant (60%). The organisms

Brucella Species Staining as Gram-Positive Rod and Gram-Positive Cocci in Chains.

Two cases of Brucellosis were identified at a hospital in Rhode Island. In both cases, the organisms were isolated from the blood cultures. The bacteria did not appear as the classical textbook description of Brucella spp. as short, Gram-negative rods; instead, Gram-positive rods and Gram-positive cocci in chains were observed. Due to the atypical Gram stain morphology, Brucella spp. were not initially considered as a possible pathogen. Antimicrobial prophylaxes were offered to the technologists who were exposed to the organisms.

Thymol as a natural monoterpenoid antibacterial agent: a comprehensive review of applications and current advances.

Thymol, a monoterpenoid phenolic compound, exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and is gaining increasing attention as a natural alternative to synthetic agents. Thymol appears to demonstrate high antibacterial efficacy against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, particularly resistant pathogens, through disruption of bacterial cell membranes, protein and enzyme inhibition, influencing DNA synthesis, and triggering oxidative stress mechanisms. Given these reported mechanisms and its broad-spectrum activity, thymol has been the subject of increasing research interest in recent y…

The microbiology of the acute dental abscess.

The acute dental abscess is frequently underestimated in terms of its morbidity and mortality. The risk of potential serious consequences arising from the spread of a dental abscess is still relevant today with many hospital admissions for dental sepsis. The acute dental abscess is usually polymicrobial comprising facultative anaerobes, such as viridans group streptococci and the Streptococcus anginosus group, with predominantly strict anaerobes, such as anaerobic cocci, Prevotella and Fusobacterium species. The use of non-culture techniques has expanded our insight into the microbial diversit

Anaerobic infections in children.

Anaerobic bacteria commonly cause infection in children. Anaerobes are the most predominant components of the normal human skin and mucous membranes bacterial flora and are therefore a common cause of bacterial infections of endogenous origin. Because of their fastidious nature, they are difficult to isolate from infectious sites and are often overlooked. Anaerobic infections can occur in all body sites, including the central nervous system, oral cavity, head and neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, skin, and soft tissues. They colonize the newborn after delivery and have been recovered from several

A visible-light activated ROS generator multilayer film for antibacterial coatings.

The current scenario of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and pandemics caused by viruses makes research in the area of antibacterial and antiviral materials and surfaces more urgent than ever. In this regard, salicylideneimine based tetracoordinate boron-containing organic compounds are emerging as a new class of photosensitizers for singlet oxygen generation. However, the inherent inability of small organic molecules to be processed limits their potential use in functional coatings. Here we show the synthesis of a novel polymer functionalized with diiodosalicylideneimine-boron difluoride (PEI-BF

Human α-Defensin 6: A Small Peptide That Self-Assembles and Protects the Host by Entangling Microbes.

Human α-defensin 6 (HD6) is a 32-residue cysteine-rich peptide that contributes to innate immunity by protecting the host at mucosal sites. This peptide is produced in small intestinal Paneth cells, stored as an 81-residue precursor peptide named proHD6 in granules, and released into the lumen. One unusual feature of HD6 is that it lacks the broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity observed for other human α-defensins, including the Paneth cell peptide human α-defensin 5 (HD5). HD6 exhibits unprecedented self-assembly properties, which confer an unusual host-defense function. HD6 monomers self-as
