Parathyroid Autofluorescence-How Does It Affect Parathyroid and Thyroid Surgery? A 5 Year Experience.

Injury to parathyroid glands during thyroid and parathyroid surgery is common and postoperative hypoparathyroidism represents a serious complication. Parathyroid glands possess a unique autofluorescence in the near-infrared spectrum which could be used for their identification and protection at an early stage of the operation. In the present study parathyroid autofluorescence was visualized intraoperatively using a standard Storz laparoscopic near-infrared/indocyanine green (NIR/ICG) imaging system with minor modifications to the xenon light source (filtered to emit 690 nm to 790 nm light, les

Differential light intensity and spectral sensitivities of Atlantic salmon, European sea bass and Atlantic cod pineal glands ex vivo.

Photoperiod is perceived by pineal photoreceptors and transduced into rhythmic melatonin signals. These rhythms can be influenced by light intensity and spectral content. In this study we compared the light sensitivity of Atlantic salmon, European sea bass and Atlantic cod by testing ex vivo the effect of different intensities and narrow bandwidth lights on nocturnal melatonin suppression by isolated pineal glands in a flow-through culture system. Using combinations of neutral density and bandpass interference filters we tested a range of light intensities (ranging from 1.22x10(13) to 3.85x10(

Mesoporous NiO/Ni2O3 nanoflowers for favorable visible light photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol.

The present study highlights the treatment of industrial effluent, which is one of the most life-threatening factors. Herein, for the first time, two types of NiO (green and black) photocatalysts were prepared by facile chemical precipitation and thermal decomposition methods separately. The synthesized NiO materials were demonstrated with various instrumental techniques for finding their characteristics. The X-ray diffraction studies (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the presence of Ni2O3 in black NiO material. The transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images engrain

Solvent-Free Synthesis of Ultrabright Carbon Dots With Near-Unity Quantum Yield for High-Performance Light-Emitting Diodes.

Conventional liquid-phase syntheses of carbon dots (CDs) often involve complex solvent-precursor interactions that induce structural and spectral heterogeneities, severely limiting their optoelectronic performance. Herein, we report a highly controlled, solvent-free, single-precursor strategy utilizing 2,6-diaminonaphthalene to synthesize ultrabright, highly uniform green-emissive CDs (DAN-CDs). Through comprehensive thermal analyses and kinetic modeling, we elucidate a spatiotemporally resolved, dual-pathway formation mechanism: a nitrogen-doped core initially assembles within an oxygen-shiel

Sensitising natural wool with green and brown coffee using a facile extraction method to optimise dye process parameters.

Green coffee powder is the raw powder of coffee cherries and all coffee's potential components are held within this green powder. A new natural colourant was extracted from Green Coffee using water as an extractant. To obtain a green-colored solution, a specific amount of green coffee was mixed with distilled water and left for 24 h at room temperature. Furthermore, the colouring performance of extracted colour has been studied using the conventional exhaust dyeing method on wool fabric. Different parameters viz. concentration of Green coffee powder, the temperature of the dye bath, the period

Pigment-Structure Leaf Syndromes in Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ex Klotzsch) Alter Chloroplast Ultrastructure, Biochemical Profiling, and Photosynthetic Quantum Yields.

Colored bracts and leaves are widespread in plants; however, how their pigments and structures jointly control the fate of absorbed light is poorly understood. We used contrasting albino and red Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ex Klotzsch) phenotypes to test how selection for extreme color morphs reshapes chloroplast ultrastructure, photosynthetic quantum yield, and the spectral signatures of colored canopies. We combined hyperspectral and thermal imaging, pigment, biochemical and antioxidant profiling, gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence, and light and electron microscopy acr

Synthesis of Visible-Light-Activated Hypervalent Iodine and Photo-oxidation under Visible Light Irradiation via a Direct S0→Tn Transition.

Heavy atom-containing molecules cause a photoreaction by a direct S0 → Tn transition. Therefore, even in a hypervalent iodine compound with a benzene ring as the main skeleton, the photoreaction proceeds under 365-400 nm wavelength light, where UV-visible spectra are not observed by usual measurement method. Some studies, however, report hypervalent iodine compounds that strongly absorb visible light. Herein, we report the synthesis of two visible light-absorbing hypervalent iodines and their photooxidation properties under visible light irradiation. We also demonstrated that the S0 → Tn trans

ICG-assisted blood vessel detection during stereotactic neurosurgery: simulation study on excitation power limitations due to thermal effects in human brain tissue.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative blood vessel detection based on intraluminal indocyanin-green (ICG) would allow to minimize the risk of blood vessel perforation during stereotactic brain tumor biopsy. For a fiber-based approach compatible with clinical conditions, the maximum tolerable excitation light power was derived from simulations of the thermal heat load on the tissue. METHODS: Using the simulation software LITCIT, the temperature distribution in human brain tissue was calculated as a function of time for realistic single-fiber probes (0.72mm active diameter, numerical aperture 0.35, option

The relationship between anthocyanin accumulation and photoprotection in young leaves of two dominant tree species in subtropical forests in different seasons.

Increasing amounts of experimental evidence show that anthocyanins provide physiological protection to plants under stress. However, the difference in photoprotection mediated by anthocyanins and other photoprotective substances in different seasons is still uncertain. To determine the relationship between anthocyanin accumulation and the photoprotective effects in different seasons, Castanopsis chinensis and Acmena acuminatissima, whose anthocyanin accumulation patterns differ in different seasons, were used as materials to explain how plants adapt to different seasons; as such, their physiol

[The effect of light with various wavelengths and impulse times on nocturnal suppression of N'acetyltransferase activation by serotonin in the pineal gland of the chick].

PURPOSE: Chick pineal gland synthesise melatonin in circadian rhythm, with peak values in the dark phase of an imposed light-dark illumination cycle. Light is the most important environmental factor regulating the melatonin-generating system in this gland. Exposure to light causes a dramatic decline of the night-time levels of the melatoninergic parameters. Effect of white and monochromatic lights of various wavelength on the night-time pineal gland serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity were examined in chicks. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Male chicks (white leghorn: 3-4-week old) were used.

Modulating depressive-like behaviors, memory impairment, and oxidative stress in chronic stress rat model using visible light therapy.

Chronic stress has been linked to significant cognitive impairments, which are exacerbated by oxidative stress and neuronal damage in brain regions such as the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. This study investigates the therapeutic effects of different visible light wavelengths (white, red, green, and blue) on cognitive dysfunction and oxidative stress in a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced rat model using stressors such as cold-water swimming, tail pinching, food and water deprivation, cage tilting, shaking, continuous illumination, wet cages, heat stress, and restraint. Shedding Some Light in the Dark-A Comparison of Personal Measurements with Satellite-Based Estimates of Exposure to Light at Night among Children in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to light at night (LAN) can perturb the biological clock and affect sleep and health. Previous epidemiological studies have evaluated LAN levels measured by satellites, but the validity of this measure as a proxy for personal LAN exposure is unclear. In addition, outdoor satellite-measured LAN levels are higher in urban environments, which means that this measure could potentially represent a proxy for other, likely urban, environmental exposures. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated correlations of satellite-assessed LAN with measured bedroom light levels and explored correlations w

Coenzyme-functionalized photo-redox catalysis for low-energy click labeling.

Photo-redox catalysis has emerged as a new generation of biochemical protocols in proximity labeling, noninvasive therapy, ultrafast activation. However, the well-developed photocatalysts cannot simultaneously possess low-energy absorption and high excited potentials to initiate photochemical reactions. Herein, we develop new Ru-PCs as bio-photocatalyst exhibiting both green-light absorption and high Ered*. Ru-PCs cooperatively function with natural coenzyme riboflavin (RF) via an integrated proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process to in situ transform Ru-PCs with two distinct ligands a

Eco-friendly carbon-nanodot-based fluorescent paints for advanced photocatalytic systems.

Fluorescent carbon nanomaterials, especially zero-dimensional (0D) carbon nanodots (CDs), are widely used in broad biological and optoelectronic applications. CDs have unique characteristics such as strong fluorescence, biocompatibility, sun-light response, and capability of mass-production. Beyond the previous green CD obtained from harmful natural substances, we report a new type of fluid-based fluorescent CD paints (C-paints) derived from polyethylene glycol (PEG; via simple ultrasound irradiation at room temperatures) and produced in quantum yields of up to ~14%. Additionally, C-paints pos

Conserved DNA architect couples chloroplast development to cell cycle in developing cotyledons.

Light orchestrates cotyledon greening and growth by coordinating chloroplast development with cell division and expansion, yet the molecular integrator of these processes remains unknown. Here we identify RDE (REGULATOR OF DG1 EXPRESSION), a conserved DNA architectural factor that synchronizes thylakoid protein complex biogenesis during chloroplast development with the G1-S transition of cell cycle progression in Arabidopsis thaliana. RDE mediates promoter DNA bending to sequester DPa in stable nucleoprotein complexes, precluding DPa-E2Fa heterodimer formation. This repression mechanism contro
