Grief after the death of a close relative: a study of associated factors and perceptions of bereavement support.

BACKGROUND: While experiencing grief following the death of a close relative is a universal experience, the grieving process and the perceived value of bereavement support vary between individuals. While research suggests that most grief reactions are considered normal and diminish over time, some individuals experience prolonged or complicated grief. Knowledge regarding which factors are associated with grief and how bereavement support is perceived by bereaved individuals is limited. AIM: This study aimed to explore factors associated with grief reactions after the death of a close relative

Experiences of Loss, Grief and Support Needs of Adults on Haemodialysis and Families: A Qualitative Explorative Study.

BACKGROUND: The burdensome life of haemodialysis impacts both patients and their families. It often leads to a stressful life marked by experiences of loss and grief. Nurses report a lack of knowledge and skills in providing grief support, as well as insufficient time for existential conversations with patients and families. OBJECTIVES: To explore the experiences of loss, grief and support needs of both adults on haemodialysis with no option of a kidney transplant and their family members. DESIGN: A qualitative explorative study, using a phenomenological-hermeneutical approach and semi-struc

Learning to live with the unresolved grief of migration: The ambiguity of leaving behind after the earthquake and adaptation.

AIM: This research examines the ambiguity of the migration process experienced by earthquake victims who had to migrate following the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquake disaster in 2023 and their adaptation to their new lives. BACKGROUND: The post-earthquake migration process can leave people with uncertainty and the problems that come with it. The uncertainty experienced by these individuals has not been addressed in the literature, and these experiences are important. METHODS: In this study, which was conducted using the phenomenological research design, the snowball sampling method, one of

Quality of end-of-life care, quality of dying and death, and grief in bereaved family caregivers.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization approximates that around 56.8 million individuals require palliative care annually, with 25.7 million of them being in the final stage of life. Ensuring high-quality care, particularly towards the end of life, can significantly enhance the quality of dying and death (QODD) for terminally ill patients. This, in turn, may alleviate grief among their loved ones following their passing. This descriptive study seeks to explore the correlation between the quality of end-of-life care (EOLC), QODD, and the experience of grief among bereaved family caregivers.

Individual and systemic variables associated with prolonged grief and other emotional distress in bereaved children.

Most children confronted with the death of a loved one do not experience persisting psychological problems. However, for some, acute grief reactions develop into prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and other mental health problems. Research findings suggest that bereavement outcomes in children are associated with negative cognitions and avoidant coping and with different parenting behaviours. However, knowledge about factors influencing grief in children is still limited and few studies have examined the relative impact of psychological (individual-level) variables and systemic (family-level) vari

Assessment of Quality of Life, Grief, and Psychosocial Need Among Bereaved Caregivers of Children with Cancer.

Cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death for children in the United States; however, limited data exists on caregivers' needs and evidence-based bereavement interventions are lacking. This is a cross-sectional study of primary caregivers of children who died from cancer. Participants completed five surveys assessing well-being and an optional semi-structured, in-depth qualitative interview. Caregiver's greatest unmet needs were finding meaning in the death, personal wellness, and social activities. Bereaved caregivers with greater unmet needs reported poorer quality of life in the

Grief, Tragic Death, and Multiple Loss in the Lives of Irish Traveller Community Health Workers.

Recent data on the inequities in mortality, health, and access to health services experienced by the Traveller community in Ireland show higher rates of death by suicide and other sudden causes among members of this marginalized minority group than in the general population. Psychological literature on bereavement suggests that traumatic deaths and multiple deaths within a close network may be more likely to lead to complicated grief reactions. The aim of this study is to add to our understanding of the effects of the differential mortality rate by exploring how grief is experienced within the

Grief rumination mediates the association between self-compassion and psychopathology in relatives of missing persons.

Background: The disappearance of a loved one is a unique type of loss, also termed 'ambiguous loss', which may heighten the risk for developing prolonged grief (PG), depression, and posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms. Little is known about protective and risk factors for psychopathology among relatives of missing persons. A potential protective factor is self-compassion, referring to openness toward and acceptance of one's own pain, failures, and inadequacies. One could reason that self-compassion is associated with lower levels of emotional distress following ambiguous loss, because it might

Long-term effects of the Entre-os-Rios tragedy on grief and traumatic stress symptoms.

In 2001, in Entre-os-Rios, Portugal, a bridge fell on Douro River; all 59 passengers from 1 bus and 3 cars died and 36 bodies have never been recovered. The objective is to reveal the cumulative risk from multiple losses and unrecovered bodies, 10 years after, compared with grievers from road accidents. There are 2 groups of relatives of victims: from this tragedy (n = 20), with at least 1 unrecovered body; and from road traffic accidents (n = 20), with the same time after loss. The prevalence of prolonged grief was 95% and for traumatic stress was 70%. The associated factors of multiple losse

Internet-Based Exposure and Behavioral Activation for Complicated Grief and Rumination: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

This study examined the effectiveness and feasibility of therapist-guided Internet-delivered exposure (EX) and behavioral activation (BA) for complicated grief and rumination. Forty-seven bereaved individuals with elevated levels of complicated grief and grief rumination were randomly assigned to three conditions: EX (N=18), BA (N=17), or a waiting-list (N=12). Treatment groups received 6 homework assignments over 6 to 8weeks. Intention-to-treat analyses showed that EX reduced complicated grief, posttraumatic stress, depression, grief rumination, and brooding levels relative to the control gro

Grief, mental health, historical trauma, and alcohol use among American Indian and Alaska Native populations.

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities experience disproportionately high rates of alcohol-related mortality, which stems from colonization, systemic oppression, and intergenerational historical trauma. Complicated grief and historical trauma have been implicated in health disparities among AI/ANs, including disparities related to alcohol and other drug (AOD) use. However, limited research has examined the relationship between grief and alcohol use among AI/ANs. This study aimed to explore this association using data from a national sample of 600 AI/AN adults who had recently ex

Navigating grief and healthcare: Mixed-methods study on patient experiences of miscarriage during COVID-19.

This paper aims to understand the patient experiences of women who suffered a miscarriage during the COVID-19 pandemic and examine the relationships of patient experience with miscarriage management, psychological distress, and COVID-19-related stressors. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design combined cross-sectional survey data and qualitative descriptive interviews. Seventy-one women in North Carolina who experienced a miscarriage during the COVID-19 stay-at-home mandates were assessed on patient experience, miscarriage management, perceived stress, anxiety, depression, posttraumatic st

Culturally Embedded, Gendered, and Iterative Grief Among Adult Sons Following Paternal Loss: A Qualitative Study.

The death of a father is a major transition for adult sons, particularly in cultures emphasizing filial duty and masculine norms. This qualitative study explored how 24 bereaved sons in Chinese society experienced paternal loss using in-depth interviews and reflexive thematic analysis. Findings revealed a non-linear, iterative grieving process: sons assumed family responsibilities, maintained relational bonds, managed paradoxical emotions, reflected on father-son relationships, and engaged in recursive coping. Grief was culturally mediated, relational, and identity-transforming, highlighting t

ICD-11 prolonged grief disorder: Prevalence, predictors, and co-occurrence in a large representative sample.

The International Classification of Diseases has recently defined Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) with symptoms such as longing, worry, and intense emotional pain that exceed sociocultural norms more than 6 months after the loss. This study aims to (a) estimate the prevalence of this new diagnostic category, (b) identify its sociodemographic and loss-related predictors, and (c) assess the co-occurrence of PGD with other psychological disorders and substance abuse. A large representative sample of Spanish adults (N = 1498) participated. Several multivariate binary logistic regression and multiva
