UNLABELLED: The syndrome of haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count (HELLP syndrome) is a severe form of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia associated with poor maternal and neonatal outcome. We report here the case of an infant born to a mother with HELLP syndrome. The infant was initially diagnosed as having nephrotic syndrome but after a follow-up period of 25 days proteinuria and oedema had disappeared.
CONCLUSION: to our knowledge, transient proteinuria with maternal HELLP syndrome has not been previously described in the literature.

A case of the HELLP syndrome is reported that was initially diagnosed as cholecystitis. Much overlap exists between the two diagnoses, and the emergency physician must be aware of the important differences between them. Because the HELLP syndrome and preeclampsia may occur in both the second and third trimesters, they represent serious diagnoses that must be considered when evaluating a pregnant patient with right upper quadrant abdominal pain.

Despite much interest in HELLP syndrome in the last years, the aetiology of this unique form of severe preeclampsia is still unknown. We report the case of a young multipara with HELLP syndrome and Trisomy 18, who had two uneventful pregnancies before and after the case reported here. This case let us presume, that Trisomy 18, as described for Trisomy 13, may be a risk factor for the development of a preeclampsia.

Aggregation und Serotonin-release were investigated depending on plasma magnesium levels. High magnesium levels inhibit the platelet function, which is stimulated in preeclamptic patients. Magnesium-infusions therefore might be of therapeutical use in SIH-patients by reducing the platelet function.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is defined as an autoimmune disorder characterized by recurrent thrombosis or obstetrical morbidity. A 29-year-old woman who was diagnosed with APS underwent emergency cesarean delivery at 23 weeks' gestation. She had a seizure attack and her laboratory findings were: AST/ALT 1459/1108 IU/L, LDH 1424 IU/L, 30% hematocrit, a platelet count of 43 × 10(3)/ml and urine protein (4+). We describe the anesthetic experience of catastrophic HELLP syndrome with antiphospholipid syndrome and we review the relevant literature.

A 33 year-old woman developed eclampsia with HELLP syndrome. Laboratory results revealed lupus anticoagulant and anticardiolipin antibodies. Imaging tests showed liver and spleen infarctions. The patients was given enoxaparin and supportive care and there was a good evolution. We discuss some aspects about liver infarction and its association with toxemia of pregnancy and the antiphospholipid syndrome.

The rare condition known as HELLP syndrome is typified by hemolysis, low platelet counts, and high liver enzymes. We report a case of a 25-year-old primigravida who presented at a previable gestational age with nonspecific symptoms. She was diagnosed with hepatic infarction, a rare but severe complication of HELLP syndrome, and was managed promptly to prevent maternal morbidity and mortality.
