Self-perceived halitosis and oral hygiene habits among undergraduate dental students.

BACKGROUND: Halitosis or oral malodor is characterized by unpleasant odor arising from the oral cavity. The prevalence of halitosis however is not studied extensively. The aim of this study was to evaluate the self perception of oral malodor and oral hygiene habits amongst dental students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A structured questionnaire consisting of ten questions was administered to 285 undergraduate students of Madha Dental College and Hospital. The questionnaire was designed to evaluate the self perception of halitosis, oral hygiene aids used, presence of dental caries, gingival bleeding…

Correlation between measurements using a new halitosis monitor and organoleptic assessment.

Halitosis is known as unpleasant oral odor and is a health concern among the general public. Previously, we reported on a new portable monitor with a zinc-oxide, thin-film, semiconductor sensor which demonstrated simplicity of handling, high reproducibility and correspondence for organoleptic assessment. The results suggested its usefulness for the diagnosis of halitosis. Using the monitor, oral air samples of 94 subjects were measured in a field survey, and the values were compared with the organoleptic rates of corresponding samples assessed by two judges. A highly significant correlation (r…

Clinical efficacy of photodynamic therapy on halitosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Halitosis is a widespread health problem with complex factors, and therapeutic effects sometimes are unsatisfactory. Plenty of clinical trials have tried to prove the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT), but the results are indeterminate. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of PDT on halitosis. We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus from inception to August 10, 2022, and only studies about the PDT on halitosis were included. The criteria for meta-analysis comprised randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the treatment of PDT with t…

Cysteine challenge test as a novel diagnostic tool to distinguish oral halitosis.

BACKGROUND: The cysteine challenge test is often used to check the H2 S production capacity of the mouth. Patients with oral halitosis group (n = 305) or non-oral halitosis group (n = 191) and healthy individuals (control group, n = 102) were compared with each other to identify any possible relationship between initial and cysteine-induced oral H2 S concentrations. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: The medical records of 598 participants were reviewed retrospectively. Oral H2 S concentrations before (pre-CR) and after cysteine rinse (post-CR) with 5 mL of 20 mmol L-cysteine solution for 30 s were compare…

Association between halitosis and female fecundability in China: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal diseases and poor oral hygiene are potentially associated with decreased female fecundability. Fecundability refers to the probability of conception during a given period measured in months or menstrual cycles. This study aims to examine whether halitosis is associated with female fecundability in a large sample of Chinese women who planned to be pregnant. METHODS: In 2012, a total of 6319 couples came for preconception care in eight districts in Shanghai, China and were followed by telephone contact. Three thousand nine hundred fifteen women who continued trying to be…

[Is there any relation between type 1 halitosis and oral candida colonisation?].

Pathologic halitosis has been classified into 5 types: oral, airway, gastroesophageal, blood-borne and subjective, respectively. Type 1 (oral) halitosis mostly takes origin from anaerobic bacterial activities on oral surfaces. The role of anaerobic bacterial activities is clearly demonstrated, but despite the large number of anectodal claims, the role of Candida in patients with halitosis has not been adequately investigated. The aim of this study was to confirm the relationship between Candida and halitosis. A total of 136 subjects were enrolled and divided into two groups. The study group co…

Untargeted metabolomics of the bacterial tongue coating of intra-oral halitosis patients.

Intra-oral halitosis (IOH) refers to an unpleasant odor from the oral cavity that is mainly caused by the tongue coating. Although the tongue coating microbiome is thought to play an essential role in IOH, the exact aetiology of IOH remains unclear. Here we investigated and compared the metabolic profiles of the tongue coating microbiomes of patients with IOH versus healthy control. The metabolic profiles were significantly different in IOH patients than in healthy controls. Healthy controls showed higher selenoamino acid and nicotinamide metabolism; these metabolic pathways are mainly involve…

[Halitosis management by the general dental practitioner- results of an International Consensus Workshop*].

Clinical investigations on patients suffering from halitosis clearly reveal that in the vast majority of cases the source for an offensive breath odor can be found within the oral cavity (90%). Based on these studies, the main sources for intra-oral halitosis where tongue coating, gingivitis/periodontitis and a combination of the two. Thus, it is perfectly logical that general dental practitioners (GDPs) should be able to manage intra-oral halitosis under the conditions found in a normal dental practice. However, GDPs who are interested in diagnosing and treating halitosis are challenged to in…

Knowledge of different medical and dental professional groups in Switzerland about halitosis.

Although halitosis is a widespread condition, it is still seen as too personal or embarrassing to talk about. The cause of real halitosis can be intraoral or extraoral. In order to determine the level of knowledge of health care providers in Switzerland, a survey was conducted over a period of three years in which 150 family physicians, 150 ear, nose and throat specialists, 154 dentists and 151 dental hygienists were personally interviewed. The survey shows that only 46.7% of the dentists and only 47.0% of the dental hygienists are consulted by patients for their halitosis, whereas 58.0% of th…

Photodynamic therapy as novel treatment for halitosis in adolescents: a case series study.

INTRODUCTION: Halitosis is a common problem that affects a large portion of the population worldwide. The origin of this condition is oral in 90% of cases and systemic in 10% of cases. The foul odor is caused mainly by volatile sulfur compounds produced by Gram-negative bacteria. However, it has recently been found that anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria also produce hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the presence of amino acids, such as cysteine. Light with and without the combination of chemical agents has been used to induce therapeutic and antimicrobial effects. In photodynamic therapy, the antimicro…

[More human than human: halitosis as the hallmark of pathological dental omission].

The theoretical perspective of the analysis conducted is linked to the fact that dental awareness should not be seen as something universal, independent from reality, though participating in its construction. This paper explores the idea symbolized in the colonization of contemporary Dentistry awareness to beyond « the more human than human ». With the example of the increasing pathologization of halitosis, as an objective disorder not only of oral health, but that affects individuals, this work develops an analysis of the (re)invention of pathologies, through visualization technologies in lat…
