Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) continues to plague our hospitals. With the appearance of isolates that are resistant to vancomycin, now, more than ever, we must direct our efforts to controlling its development and spread. New antimicrobials have become available for treatment, but may only be a short-term answer. Our efforts towards control must be directed towards infection control measures such as improved hand hygiene with user-friendly products, such as alcohol-based hand disinfectants. Intranasal mupirocin may have a place in prevention of surgical site infection, alt

A clinical strain of the opportunistic pathogen Serratia rubidaea, a known contaminant of healthcare environments and an emerging cause of invasive infections, is described. The studied isolate, recovered from a nurse's hand skin swab during routine screening, exhibits a broad profile of antibiotic resistance combined with reduced susceptibility to several disinfectants. Phenotypic susceptibility testing using a tablet-based microdilution and disk diffusion method was employed to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of antimicrobial agents from different classes, while broth

Measures to control SARS-CoV-2 often include the regular disinfection of public surfaces. The frequency of SARS-CoV-2 detection on surfaces in the surrounding of confirmed cases was evaluated in this systematic review. Overall, 26 studies showed 0 and 100% rates of contamination with SARS-CoV-2 RNA on surfaces in the surrounding of patients. Seven studies with at least 100 samples mostly showed detection rates between 1.4 and 19%. Two other studies did not detect infectious SARS-CoV-2 on any surface. Similar results were obtained from surfaces in the surrounding of confirmed SARS- and influenz

A selected group of 142 hospital "wet" workers with hand eczema was studied. 91% were female. Atopy (58%), metal dermatitis (41%), and hand eczema prior to the current wet work (67%) were more common than in the total cohort to which these patients belonged. Patch tests were carried out on 120 patients and prick tests on 41 with a history of contact urticaria. Water, cleaning agents, hand disinfectants, the wearing of gloves and other trivial irritant factors were claimed to have elicited the current episodes of hand eczema in 92.3% of cases. In 35%, a considerable part of the exposure to irri

Between March 15 and April 5, 2025, an outbreak of Candidozyma auris, a multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen, was detected in the intensive care unit of a tertiary care center in Thiruvananthapuram, India. Five patients were affected-three with bloodstream infections and two with asymptomatic colonization. Interventions included patient screening, cohorting, enhanced hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, and disinfection of shared equipment. C. auris was identified using MALDI-TOF, but antifungal susceptibility testing could not be performed. The probable index case was a colonized patient with

Human enterovirus 71 (EV71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16) are the two major etiological agents in major outbreaks of hand, foot, and mouth disease. Transmission of these viruses is facilitated by prolonged environmental survival and their resistance to biocides, and effective disinfection is crucial to interrupt the cycle of environmental spread. We tested the virucidal efficacy of sodium hypochlorite against both EV71 and CVA16, performed according to the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) test criteria and methods approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Our resul

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare associated infections not only cause morbidity and mortality, but also drain the resources in the hospitals across the globe. It has been shown repeatedly that practicing hand hygiene is a deterrent to hospital acquired infection. It is essential for the infection control committee and the hospital administrators to have a fair idea of the prevailing hand hygiene practice in the healthcare facility. This is commonly obtained direct observation, self-reporting by healthcare workers and indirect calculation based on hand hygiene disinfectant product usage.

It is essential that nurses recognise the consequences of patients acquiring a healthcare-associated infection (HCAI). This article outlines how handwashing continues to be the most important factor in reducing HCAI, but that the use of an aseptic technique will further cut the risk of infection. Because most aseptic techniques do not require a surgical aseptic technique, emphasis is placed on the use of an aseptic non-touch technique, which is required for many procedures in hospital and the community.

INTRODUCTION: Inadequate surgical scrubbing is a key risk factor for surgical site infections (SSIs). Visual documentation of errors during training enhances learning while the Semmelweis Scanner provides objective quality control. This study hypothesized that displaying graphic images of severe SSIs in the scrub room would improve students’ surgical scrub discipline and effectiveness. By serving as a stark visual reminder of the consequences of poor hand hygiene, this approach was expected to enhance adherence to proper scrubbing protocols, especially among Generation Z students, who respond

INTRODUCTION: The virulence binding factor, protective antigen (pag) and poly-D-γ-glutamate capsular (cap) genes, peculiar to Bacillus anthracis are located in the pXO1 and pXO2 plasmids which are transferable horizontally to related species called "cereus group". The cereus group are usually isolated from the environmental/food samples and have been implicated in debilitating human and animal anthrax-like diseases. This study was designed to investigate the presence of the anthrax virulence genes in different Bacillus spp. isolated from handwashing facilities during COVID-19 pandemic in Lagos

In the absence of potent antimicrobial agents, it is estimated that bacterial infections could cause millions of deaths. The emergence of COVID-19, its complex pathophysiology and the high propensity of patients to coinfections has resulted in therapeutic regimes that use a cocktail of antibiotics for disease management. Suboptimal antimicrobial stewardship in this era and the slow pace of drug discovery could result in large-scale drug resistance, narrowing future antimicrobial therapeutics. Thus, judicious use of current antimicrobials is imperative to keep up with existing and emerging infe

During the COVID-19 pandemic, prolonged usage of personal protective equipment (PPE) and frequent handwashing has exacerbated or caused skin diseases, particularly amongst frontline workers. Skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, and hand eczema, affect patients’ quality of life and their ability to work. These conditions can be managed by frequent moisturization and washing with gentle cleansers. In this review, we discuss the properties of effective moisturizers and cleansers for patients with skin diseases related to enhanced infection control procedures.
