Early life programming of hemispheric lateralization and synchronization in the adult medial prefrontal cortex.

Neonatal maternal separation (MS) in the rat increases the vulnerability to stressors later in life. In contrast, brief handling (H) in early life confers resilience to stressors in adulthood. Early life programming of stress reactivity may involve the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a region which modulates various stress responses. Moreover, hemispheric specialization in mPFC may mediate adaptive coping responses to stress. In the present study, neuronal activity was examined simultaneously in left and right mPFC in adult rats previously subjected to MS, H or animal facility rearing (AFR).

Functional observational battery comparing effects of ethanol, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, ether, and flurothyl.

Several recent reports have demonstrated that acute solvent exposure in animals produces a profile of neurobehavioral effects similar to that of classical CNS depressant drugs such as the barbiturates and ethanol. The present investigation further delineated the behavioral pharmacology of three solvents [1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCE), ether, and flurothyl] using a functional observational battery (FOB) composed of 21 qualitative and quantitative measures of behavior. The profiles of acute effects produced by TCE and ether were similar to one another and similar to the profile of effects produced

Multi-Modal Depression Recognition Via Label-Aware Contrastive Learning and Cross-Modal Alignment.

The diagnostic accuracy of depression is hindered by its heterogeneous presentation and the insufficiency of unimodal data. To address this, we introduce a novel framework, Multi-Modal Depression Recognition via Label-Aware Contrastive Learning and Cross-Modal Alignment (MMDR-LCA). Our core technical contribution is a cross-modal alignment mechanism that systematically models the dyadic relationships between text-audio, text-video, and audio-video modalities. Unlike conventional fusion, this mechanism explicitly mitigates latent modality conflicts, such as positive facial expressions deceptive

Real-World Analysis of Organ Transplantation-Specific Agent Based on Large Language Model in Post-Transplant Self-Management During Off-Hours: A Mixed-Methods Study.

OBJECTIVE: A significant gap exists in medical support for organ transplant patients during out-of-hours (OOH). General large language models (LLMs), affected by AI hallucinations, are unsuitable for complex post-transplant care. We built the first post-transplant AI agent based on LLMs to address these issues. METHODS: We constructed a specialized "post-transplant AI agent" (named Doctor Xiao Yi) and conducted a mixed-methods study comparing it to a hospital-wide general AI agent (named Nan Xiao Yi). Data included 20,176 real-world logs (June-December 2025) and a cross-sectional survey of 15

[Parental Distress of Patients Who Refuse to Eat: Toward a Deeper Understanding and Greater Support for Parents of Children Suffering from an Eating Disorder].

Parental Distress of Patients Who Refuse to Eat: Toward a Deeper Understanding and Greater Support for Parents of Children Suffering from an Eating Disorder Abstract: Many parents experience their role as parents of a daughter/son with anorexia nervosa as very troublesome and demanding. In several departments of child and adolescen psychiatry in Germany, the contact between parents and adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa is still restricted because parents are often judged responsible for the eating disorder of their child - or at least seen as troublemakers during their child's inpatien

Developing a prognostic model for stress reduction in patients with prolonged work-related stress.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is a 9-session group-treatment programme for managing stress. Research suggests variability in the outcomes of MBSR among participants. This prognostic (not causal) study develops a multivariable model that may support clinicians in forecasting expected MBSR outcomes. We used data of 763 patients collected from MBSR programs conducted between October 2015 and March 2022. Candidate prognostic factors at baseline included psychosocial work environment, sociodemographic, and clinical information. Multiple imputation was used to handle missing data (imputa

Emotional Dysregulation in Children and Adolescents With Psychiatric Disorders. A Narrative Review.

Background: Emotional dysregulation (ED) is a transdiagnostic construct defined as the inability to regulate the intensity and quality of emotions (such as, fear, anger, sadness), in order to generate an appropriate emotional response, to handle excitability, mood instability, and emotional overreactivity, and to come down to an emotional baseline. Because ED has not been defined as a clinical entity, and because ED plays a major role in child and adolescent psychopathology, we decided to summarize current knowledge on this topic based on a narrative review of the current literature. Methods:

When affordances are not universal: The negative compatibility effect is modulated by task type and spatial association.

Humans prepare motor actions when perceiving objects that afford specific behaviors, highlighting the tight link between perception and action. For example, seeing a graspable object like a mug can trigger hand movements aligned to its handle - a phenomenon known as the object affordance effect. Vainio et al. (Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology 64, 1094-1110, 2011) demonstrated this can produce a negative compatibility effect (NCE). This occurs when a spatially compatible prime object eliciting an affordance (e.g., a mug), but to be ignored, precedes a target requiring a spatial resp

Stacked artificial neural network to predict the mental illness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The individual's mental health crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic lead to mental disorders. The transmission of the COVID-19 virus is associated with the levels of anxiety, stress, and depression in individuals, similar to other factors. Increases in mental illness cases and the prevalence of depression have peaked after the pandemic struck. The limited social intervention, reduced communication, peer support, and increased social isolation during the pandemic resulted in higher levels of depression, stress, and anxiety which leads to mental illness. Physiological distress is associated with the

Behavioral Modeling for Mental Health using Machine Learning Algorithms.

Mental health is an indicator of emotional, psychological and social well-being of an individual. It determines how an individual thinks, feels and handle situations. Positive mental health helps one to work productively and realize their full potential. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Many factors contribute to mental health problems which lead to mental illness like stress, social anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, drug addiction, and personality disorders. It is becoming increasingly important to determine

From evidence-based to hope-based medicine? Ethical aspects on conditional market authorization of and early access to new cancer drugs.

There is a strong patient demand for early access to potentially beneficial cancer drugs. In line with this authorization agencies like the European Medicines Agency are providing drugs with conditional market authorisation based on positive interim analyses. This implies that drugs are used with insecure evidence of efficacy and adverse side-effects. Several authors have pointed to ethical problems with such a system but up to date no indepth ethical analysis of this system is found which is the aim of this article. Drawing of the four generally accepted principles of medical ethics: benefice

Appropriate training based on Balint groups can improve the empathic abilities of medical students: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: Although empathy is critical in a doctor-patient relationship, empathic abilities seem to decline throughout medical school. This study aimed at examining changes in empathic abilities of fourth-year medical students who participated in an optional certificate based on Balint groups. METHODS: Thirty-four students were included in the "Balint group" certificate and compared with 129 participating in other certificates. Before the training sessions and 4 months later, they filled up the interpersonal reactivity index (IRI) and were asked to rate their emotional reactions in response

Who's there and who cares: age as an indicator of social support networks for caregivers among people living with motor neurone disease.

This paper explores the social support networks available to the informal carers of people living with motor neurone disease (MND). An ethnographic case study was undertaken using eco mapping, observation and conversational interviews to collect data from 18 primary carers of people living with MND. Interviews took place in participants' homes in metropolitan, regional and rural locations. Participants discussed the content of their support network and drew lines between individuals to indicate the type and strength of relationship. Changes to the network were depicted on eco maps during subse

TAC-TIC therapy with premature infants: a series of investigative studies.

This article provides a synopsis of a series of studies exploring the effects of TAC-TIC (Touching And Caressing-Tender In Caring) therapy with premature infants. Study 1 looked at the short and long-term effects and found enhanced mental development in the stroked infants at 15 months. In study 2 the physiological effects of an abbreviated version of TAC-TIC with high-risk ventilated infants were examined and it was concluded that TAC-TIC exerted no harm to these vulnerable infants. The behavioural reactions of a sample of premature and low birthweight infants to TAC-TIC and parental response
