Making Connections: Understanding How Screening, Triage, and Referral Processes Can Promote Veteran Housing Stability.

To improve understanding of the screening, triage, and referral processes within social determinant of health-Electronic Medical Record (EMR) integration, we explored how Veterans connect with needed resources following screening for housing instability using three data sources: administrative Homelessness Screening Clinical Reminder (HSCR) data, administrative Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) data, and chart review data. The cohort included Veterans who had responded to the HSCR in the 90 days prior to presenting for SSVF services between October 2012 and 2015 (N = 134); chart

Cutting Care: How Changes to the 340B Drug Pricing Program Impact Patients Served by Federally Qualified Health Centers.

The high cost of medication is a common challenge for many Americans. This is particularly true for patients served by Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) that often have low income and are medically vulnerable. In this article I discuss the history and purpose behind the creation of the 340B drug pricing program, legislation enacted to limit the cost of drugs used by patients covered by Medicaid that requires drug manufacturers to enter into discount agreements with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and how for years this program has been used to finance health c

Child abuse and neglect in Turkey: professional, governmental and non-governmental achievements in improving the national child protection system.

Since ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1995, significant efforts were made in Turkey to improve protection of children from abuse and neglect. The government took steps to amend relevant laws. Several state departments recognized the need for professional in-service training of relevant governmental agency staff. University hospitals established numerous hospital-based multidisciplinary child protection centres. The government established an Interministerial Higher Council, which has been overseeing the foundation of 13 child advocacy centres for a mu

How can we value what is not measured: the need for better data on women's health and primary care.

Decisions about healthcare funding and delivery in Aotearoa New Zealand, as well as the monitoring of health service performance and outcomes, are driven by readily available data, in particular from administrative health datasets. Most of these national health data collections are generated through the delivery of secondary health services. Further, apart from hospitalisation and mortality collections, these lack diagnostic coding, rendering the burden and cost of chronic health conditions predominantly managed in primary care largely invisible. Many of these types of health conditions dispro

Impact on hospital functions following the 2010 Chilean earthquake.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the impact of the 2010 Chilean earthquake on hospital functions and services. Hospitals functioning in a post-disaster environment must provide emergency medical care related to the event, in addition to providing standard community health services. This study focused on damage to both structural and nonstructural components, as well as to utility services. METHODS: Site visits were made to every hospital in a single province (Bio-Bio). Engineers conducted damage assessments while interviews of hospital administrators were conducted. The su

Adult Medicaid Coverage for Periodontal Treatment: A State-to-State Comparison.

Dental care remains an optional benefit for adults with Medicaid, with coverage varying across states. Recent expansions increased periodontal service coverage, but the scope of coverage and the policies that govern that scope remain unknown. This study analyzed coverage policies and fees for four periodontal services across 43 Medicaid programs between January and March 2024. Frequency limitations were the most common coverage policies identified, followed by prior authorization requirements, clinical requirements, and quadrant limitations. Veteran Health Administration fees were roughly thre

Combatting the opioid epidemic: Baltimore's experience and lessons learned.

In the midst of a national opioid crisis, Baltimore City witnessed 393 deaths from drug and alcohol overdose in 2015. With an estimated 25 000 residents who are addicted to heroin or other opioids, Baltimore has been profoundly affected by the opioid epidemic. The Role of Community Health Workers in Increasing Access to Essential Health and Social Services During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Objectives. To describe the health care and social services needs addressed by community health workers (CHWs) through referrals in the Community Health Workers for COVID-19 Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) program. Methods. We performed a descriptive analysis of national performance measure data from 67 CCR recipients from 2021 to 2024 documenting referrals, alongside 2 web-based surveys of 63 program administrators and 689 CHWs in the United States in early 2024. Results. CHWs made 464 158 social and 323 769 health referrals, with 282 596 referrals completed. Referrals included servi

Veteran Characteristics Associated With Risk of 30-Day Inpatient Mental Health (IMH) Readmissions.

Repeated admissions to psychiatric inpatient services affect patients' quality of life and may be indicative of the quality of care received during the previous inpatient admissions and/or follow-up outpatient care. Therefore, identifying patient characteristics associated with higher risk of readmission is critical to facilitate appropriate inpatient and follow-up outpatient care to reduce readmissions. In this study, we investigated veteran socio-economic and clinical characteristics associated with the odds of 30-day readmission to Veterans Health Administration Inpatient Mental Health serv

Framing gynaecological health: A landscaping of health policy and services in India.

Gynaecological health requires a health systems approach through the life course to address the interlinked nature of common gynaecological conditions or symptoms. This narrative review, following the READ approach, examined how the public health system in India addresses gynaecological health, as reflected in policies, services and data. A multi-disciplinary team searched government policies, service guidelines and standards across relevant Ministries and national institutions, Parliamentary Questions, government surveys and administrative data sources between 2005 and 2025. Examining Gender as a Correlate of Self-Reported Pain Treatment Use Among Recent Service Veterans with Deployment-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Women veterans with chronic pain utilize health care with greater frequency than their male counterparts. However, little is known about gender differences in the use of specialty pain care in this population. This investigation examined gender differences in self-reported use of opioids, interventional pain treatments, rehabilitation therapies, and complementary and integrative health (CIH) services for chronic pain treatment both within and outside of the Veterans Health Administration in a sample of veterans who served in support of recent conflicts. METHODS: Participants includ

Evaluating the "right@home" randomized trial of nurse home visiting using linked administrative data at school transition.

INTRODUCTION: Nurse home visiting (NHV) is designed to redress child and maternal health inequities, but long-term evaluation is hampered by sample attrition. Evaluation using administrative data has the potential to overcome attrition through provision of a more complete outcome profile. Australia's "right@home" trial is the only long-running evaluation of NHV designed for a population with universal healthcare. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of the NHV program on children's health and development outcomes and service use, compared with usual care (comparator), using linked administr
