Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus with the potential to cause large outbreaks, as well as serious complications, hospitalization, and death. Receipt of 2 doses of measles vaccine is 97% effective at preventing disease and is recommended for all persons aged ≥12 months to ensure high levels of population immunity and reduce the risk for outbreaks. In January 2025, a large measles outbreak began in a west Texas community and quickly spread to nearby jurisdictions, including New Mexico. The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) eventually reported 99 outbreak-related measles case

Unlike research on "associative" hard-to-reach populations, such as those at risk of AIDS, which has been subject to extensive methodological scrutiny, few studies have explored strategies for researching nonassociative hard-to-reach populations: those whose members do not normally have contact with other members. This article contributes toward rectifying this imbalance. The literature review includes issues of representativeness, use of membership lists or other centralized sources of information, innovative ways of gaining access to nonassociative population members, and an overview of mult

Parechoviruses (PeVs) are RNA viruses that belong to the Picornaviridae family. PeV-A is known to cause human disease, particularly in neonates and young infants. The symptoms of infection can range from mild febrile and respiratory illnesses to severe sepsis-like conditions and central nervous system (CNS) infections. In 2022, clusters of PeV infections were reported in various parts of the world, prompting public health agencies to issue a health advisory to alert physicians about circulating PeVs causing CNS infections in children. Reports of PeV infections in Gulf Council countries are sca

After the 1988 World Health Assembly resolution to eradicate poliomyelitis, the Global Laboratory Network for Poliomyelitis Eradication (the laboratory network) was established by the World Health Organization (WHO). The laboratory network is one component of an international surveillance system for detecting polioviruses through laboratory investigation of stool samples from persons with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). This infrastructure is critical for guiding strategies to eradicate polio globally. This report summarizes the laboratory network's performance and describes the location and ch

The mid-level practitioner movement is no longer experimental; nurse practitioners and physician's assistants in California have proved to fill a necessary and viable professional role in the delivery of primary health care. The physician's assistant law (AB2109) and the Experimental Manpower Act (AB1503) have facilitated the training and functioning of these new health care professionals; more comprehensive laws are still needed to permit optimal utilization. National agencies for approval of teaching programs and testing of individual graduates will play an increasing role in the accreditati

As endocrinologists we have focused on biological contributors to disparities in diabetes, obesity and other endocrine disorders. Given that diabetes is an exemplar health disparity condition, we, as a specialty, are also positioned to view the contributing factors and solutions more broadly. This will give us agency in contributing to health system, public health, and policy-level interventions to address the structural and institutional racism embedded in our medical and social systems. A history of unconsented medical and research experimentation on vulnerable groups and perpetuation of eug

UNLABELLED: Policy Points This study highlights health care leaders' use of lean management practices to advance equity and scale initiatives supporting the delivery of high-quality care for all patients. As a next step in this work, there is a need to develop new measurement systems with clearly defined performance metrics that ensure accountability to equity standards. Standards can be reinforced by government agencies, professional associations, and accrediting bodies. Examples include building equity-specific metrics into Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' Medicare Advantage STAR

This paper describes a sudden increase of meningococcal notifications in the Australian Capital Territory within a 3 month period, and the public health strategies used to manage it. There were 15 cases of meningococcal disease notified to the Communicable Disease Control (CDC) section, Australian Capital Territory Health (ACT Health), between 6 November 2003 and 5 February 2004. This was much higher than the annual average of 6 cases. The cases were notified in 2 clusters. The first cluster of 8 cases, all serogroup C, was notified between 6 November to 8 December 2003. Seven of these cases h

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is estimated to have infected more than a million people in the United States and millions more in other countries. Even though there is no vaccine or effective treatment, HIV infection can be prevented through behavioral change. As the lead Public Health Service Agency for disease prevention, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has designed and implemented information and education activities with the ultimate goal of preventing HIV infection and AIDS in the United States. The target populations include the general public, school- and college-aged popu

Recurring outbreaks of infectious diseases have characterized the West African region in the past 4 decades. There is a moderate to high risk of yellow fever in countries in the region, and the disease has reemerged in Nigeria after 21 years. A full-scale simulation exercise of the outbreak of yellow fever was conducted to assess preparedness and response in the event of a full-scale outbreak. The exercise was a multi-agency exercise conducted in Lagos, and it involved health facilities, points of entry, state and national public health emergency operation centers, and laboratories. The Hispanic population in the United States is growing rapidly but this population has many health care needs that are not being met. The findings from recent research on the current health status of Hispanic people who live in the United States are presented. An assessment of how accessible and available medical care services are to Hispanic people is made. Serious gaps exist in the delivery of medical care services to this group. Human service providers, particularly social workers, can help make the current health care system more responsive to the needs of this group by helping Hispanic i

INTRODUCTION: Menstrual health and menstrual inequity have been neglected in social, economic, healthcare and political spheres. Although available evidence is scarce, it already suggests a link between experiencing menstrual inequity (which refers to the systematic disparities in accessing menstrual health and education, menstrual products and spaces for menstrual management, among other aspects) and menstrual health outcomes. The aim of this study was to explore experiences of menstrual health and menstrual inequity among women and people who menstruate aged 18-55 in Barcelona and surroundin

This article seeks to examine the impact of technology importation on occupational health and safety in both Saudi Arabian and U.S. oil refining industries. Technologies imported to the Saudi oil industry take two forms: hardware (sophisticated equipment to run oil facilities) and software (policies and regulations pertaining to workers' health and safety, and employment rights installed by Aramco's founding multinational companies). This study utilizes qualitative, historically oriented, cross-national case studies to compare and assess workers' health, safety, and rights in Saudi Aramco with

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) co-infection in Nigeria are medical conditions of public health importance because they double the country's and its citizens' burden. Several management measures, including artificial intelligence (AI), are crucial for properly diagnosing and preventing these diseases. This study explores the role of AI in managing HIV and TB co-infection in Nigeria. A comprehensive literature search strategy was developed using the keywords "HIV," "TB," "co-infection," "artificial intelligence," and "Nigeria" across six electronic databases: PubMed, Go

Lyme disease is an infectious illness that arises from the spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi transmitted via a bite by Ixodid ticks. There were 768 cases in the United Kingdom (incidence 1.46/100,000) identified by the Health Protection Agency in 2006. Clinical manifestations of Lyme disease can be multi-systemic. It is important for the acute physician to be aware of this condition. Its relative infrequency and unusual presentation can result in delayed diagnosis with potential for suboptimal outcome. Here, we present a case of Lyme disease presenting with abdominal pain and intestinal dysmoti

Health systems in developed countries face escalating challenges, including rising costs, workforce crises, safety concerns and persistent inequities. Despite widespread recognition of the need for transformation, progress has been slow and fragmented. The Canadian experience underscores this reality: a decade after the federal health minister's Advisory Panel on Healthcare Innovation released its landmark report, many of its key recommendations - including a $1-billion innovation fund and a national healthcare innovation agency - remain unfulfilled. During this period, system pressures have i

INTRODUCTION: Solid waste management (SWM) has become a major environmental and public health challenge in urban areas due to rapid urbanization, population growth, and changing consumption patterns. Conventional centralized waste management systems have led to frequent environmental issues. In response to these challenges, many urban local bodies have implemented decentralized SWM that focuses on processing waste closer to the point of generation.
AIM: This study aimed to explore the implementation, stakeholder perceptions, practices, and challenges associated with SWM in the Thiruvananthapu
