Care for burn patients is defined in most developed countries as an independent multidisciplinary specialty (burn medicine) and it is concentrated to specialized units, which are sufficiently staffed with appropriate space area and equipment. Since the 50s of the previous century in the former Czechoslovakia, there were five such units, three of which were in the Czech Republic (Prague, Ostrava, Brno). The specialty successfully developed and achieved prestige also abroad, mainly due to uninterrupted contacts with the foreign units. Until approximately mid 90s of the previous century, an incre

Over the past two decades, there has been a continuous improvement in outcome for patients with indolent lymphoma (iNHL) resulting in a gradual accumulation of survivors. While life expectancy in the current era approaches that of the lymphoma-free population, patients continue to experience lifelong complications of the disease and its treatment affecting general health, emotional, psychological and social wellbeing, relationships, employment, finances, and fitness. Contemporary care models while suited to the management of lymphoma are often lacking when it comes to identification and manage

Self-care is an essential component of health and can increase autonomy, improve access to health information and treatment, and support more appropriate use of formal healthcare services. This editorial focuses on medicine-related self-care. For clarity, self-medication refers here to the selection and use of medicines without a prescription or direct clinician instruction, whereas pharmacist-supported self-care refers to structured pharmacist assessment, advice, safety-netting, and referral within the broader self-care pathway. However, the expansion of medicine-related self-care also create

This narrative review examines the evolution, implementation, and impact of Community-Based HIV Testing (CBT) across Europe and Central Asia (ECA), a region where late diagnosis remains a persistent challenge and key populations continue to face substantial structural, legal, and social barriers to accessing conventional healthcare. This review synthesises evidence from academic studies, surveillance reports, and European initiatives to describe the diverse modalities of CBT, as well as their contribution to earlier diagnosis, improved case-finding among first-time testers, and more timely lin

New adult tuberculosis (TB) vaccines are in clinical trials and may be licensed as soon as 2028. However, vaccine rollout requires addressing multiple contextual factors beyond clinical trial findings. This study explored stakeholders' perspectives on the introduction of a new TB vaccine in Indonesia. We used a mixed-methods approach combining a stakeholder consultation in Jakarta (13/03/2025) among 28 participants with diverse expertise and follow-up interviews with two of those participants. Participants completed a structured questionnaire (via Slido) consisting of closed- and open-ended qu

The COVID-19 pandemic affected people with disabilities in different aspects, including their access to physical rehabilitation (PR). Despite a significant global surge in the need for PR, it has not been prioritized and is under-resourced, even in the non-COVID era, in many countries. This study aimed to explore the challenges of delivering PR services during the COVID-19 pandemic in Iran and potential solutions to these challenges. This qualitative study was done using a thematic approach from November 2023 to March 2024 in Iran. 45 PR professionals and faculty members from three fields-phys

BACKGROUND: Financial hardship is among the significant challenges in the utilization of maternal healthcare services in India. It is further aggravated by the issue of inequality in the distress financing (DF) for institutional delivery (ID) which pushes the poor into a vicious cycle of poverty. The paper examines the pattern of inequality and regional variation in DF for ID in India. It also determines the factor contributing to the inequality in the DF for ID among a few selected states.
METHODS: The paper uses unit-level data from the fifth National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) round con

In 2013, Kenya implemented free maternity services, later expanded in 2016 into the 'Linda Mama' policy to provide essential health services for pregnant women. This study explored the policy formulation background, processes, content, and actors' roles in formulation and implementation. Using a convergent parallel mixed-methods case study design, we reviewed documents and conducted in-depth interviews with national stakeholders, county officials, and healthcare workers. We applied a theoretical framework capturing the background and context, processes, content, and actors. The study spanned n

Private providers play an important role in health systems in low-and middle-income countries. In many such contexts, markets are characterized by a high number of relatively small private facilities. The potential risks from highly concentrated healthcare markets are well-researched, and feature in the "Theories of Harm" investigated by competition regulators. However, there is limited evidence on markets that exhibit substantial harms as a result of very low concentration. This paper explores the risks associated with such market fragmentation, drawing on the example of Georgia, which has a

The aging population is considered to be one of the major factors driving the cost of healthcare upward in industrialised countries. However, several analyses show that expenditure has increased mainly because of other factors. Expenditure is expected to increase when an aging population is combined with technical progress. In addition, the growing proportion of the population who are elderly means that there is an increasing proportion of people who do not work, creating further problems in the financing of healthcare. These problems make it imperative to provide medical care to the elderly i

BACKGROUND & AIMS: More than 292 million people are living with hepatitis B worldwide and are at risk of death from cirrhosis and liver cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) has set global targets for the elimination of viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. However, current levels of global investment in viral hepatitis elimination programmes are insufficient to achieve these goals.
METHODS: To catalyse political commitment and to encourage domestic and international financing, we used published modelling data and key stakeholder interviews to develop an investment framewor
