Mitral annular disjunction is increasingly recognized as an important anatomic feature of mitral valve disease. The presence of mitral annular disjunction, defined as separation between the left atrial wall at the point of mitral valve insertion and the left ventricular free wall, has been associated with increased degeneration of the mitral valve and increased incidence of sudden cardiac death. The clinical importance of this entity necessitates standard reporting on cardiovascular imaging reports if patients are to receive adequate risk stratification and management. We provide a narrative r

Ebstein's anomaly is the most common congenital abnormality of the tricuspid valve and accounts for about 0.5% of cases of the congenital heart diseases. It has occasionally been associated with other syndromes but not with the congenital deafmutism. The first case of Ebstein's anomaly associated with the congenital deafmutism is reported. The patient remained asymptomatic until the age of 35 years and presented with palpitations and dizzy spells. This patient also manifested mitral valve prolapse and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome with right-sided accessory conduction pathway.

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is the most common valvular heart disease, with a reported prevalence of 2-3% in the general population, and represents the leading structural cause of mitral regurgitation in Western countries. MVP has long been considered predominantly a benign condition; however, it may be associated with adverse clinical events, including severe mitral regurgitation, atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, endocarditis, stroke, and ventricular arrhythmias, potentially leading to sudden cardiac death.

Numerous controversies still exist in the diagnosis and management of valvular heart disease, for example, the benefit of treating moderate aortic stenosis (AS) or asymptomatic, severe AS and the appropriate selection criteria for transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair. While numerous imaging parameters have been linked to the risk of sudden cardiac death in mitral valve prolapse, their relative merits are unknown and this is a challenging population to risk-stratify. No large, randomized data exist to guide selection of patients for transcatheter repair of tricuspid regurgitation or v

Infective endocarditis is best characterized as a disease in evolution. The list of patients at risk, which formerly included almost exclusively patients with rheumatic heart disease, is being continuously modified and expanded. Nowadays, patients with prosthetic heart valves, users of illicit intravenous drugs, and patients with mitral valve prolapse rather than patients with rheumatic heart disease account for the majority of cases of infective endocarditis. Moreover, due to the widespread use of indwelling atrial catheters for parenteral nutrition as well as for intensive cytotoxic therapy,

Although both are initially asymptomatic, mitral valve prolapse/myxomatous mitral valve disease (MVP/MMVD) and bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), with its associated aortic disease, are currently the two most common congenital valvular heart diseases. Severe mitral regurgitation due to rupture of chordae tendineae (CTR) prompts surgery for MVP/MMVD. Surgery for BAV is performed for severe aortic stenosis and/or regurgitation, often with management of root and/or ascending aortic enlargement. There may be an association between straight back syndrome (SBS) and MVP/MMVD, which may be a key to earlier

Embolism from the heart causes about one-fifth of ischemic strokes and transient ischemic attacks. Although a potential embolic source may be found in up to one-third of cases, which are actually caused by other mechanisms, in the young patient more than one source of embolism is less likely. The most-important embolic sources are non-rheumatic and rheumatic atrial fibrillation (AF), infective endocarditis, prosthetic heart valves, recent myocardial infarction, dilated cardiomyopathy, intracardiac tumors, and rheumatic mitral stenosis. Uncomplicated mitral valve prolapse should no longer be co

OBJECTIVES: Transapical Neochordae implantation (NC) allows beating heart mitral valve repair in patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation. The aim of this single-centre, retrospective study was to compare outcomes of NC versus conventional surgical (CS) mitral valve repair.
METHODS: Data of patients who underwent isolated mitral valve repair with NC or CS from January 2010 to December 2018 were collected. A propensity score matching analysis was performed to reduce confounding due to baseline differences between groups. The primary end point was overall all-cause mortality; secondary e

BACKGROUND: The use of donor hearts with valvular disease has been considered debatable in heart transplantation for many years. However, few reports indicate successful heart transplantation using donor hearts with mitral regurgitation that underwent mitral valve repair on the back bench.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of a 38-year-old and a 48-year-old woman with implantable left ventricular assist devices who underwent heart transplantation at our institution. Transthoracic echocardiography of donor hearts just before the explant revealed that each donor heart had preserved cardiac

OBJECTIVES: To investigate biomechanics and failure mechanisms of unbalanced right-dominant common atrioventricular valves (CAVVs) across stages of single-ventricle palliation (SVP).
METHODS: A patient-specific adjustable valve testing mount was developed, and size-matched porcine tricuspid and mitral valves were combined to construct CAVVs (n = 5). Valves were tested in a heart simulator under hemodynamic conditions replicating Norwood, Glenn, and Fontan physiologies. Papillary muscles were displaced vertically and horizontally to simulate chordal prolapse, shortening, and ventricular dilata

An 82-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of severe mitral valve regurgitation( MR)with symptoms of heart failure. Preoperative transesophageal echocardiography( TEE) showed P2 prolapse due to chordal rupture, severe calcification of P2, and mild tricuspid valve regurgitation. The patient underwent mitral valve replacement using the MITRIS RESILIA mitral valve and tricuspid annuloplasty. Intraoperative TEE showed a mild regurgitation from the cuff on the A1P1 side at the mitral valve position. After the second aortic declamping, 4-0 prolene felted mattress suture was placed on

Mature heart valves are complex structures consisting of three highly organized extracellular matrix layers primarily composed of collagens, proteoglycans and elastin. Collectively, these diverse matrix components provide all the necessary biomechanical properties for valve function throughout life. In contrast to healthy valves, myxomatous valve disease is the most common cause of mitral valve prolapse in the human population and is characterized by an abnormal abundance of proteoglycans within the valve tri-laminar structure. Despite the clinical significance, the etiology of this phenotype

BACKGROUND: Diseases of the heart valves constitute a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) being the dominant form of valvular heart disease (VHD) in developing nations. The current study was undertaken at a tertiary care cardiac center with the objective of establishing the incidence and patterns of VHD by Echocardiography (Echo).
METHODS: Among the 136,098 first-time Echocardiograms performed between January 2010 and December 2012, an exclusion criterion of trivial and functional regurgitant lesions yielded a total of 13,289 case

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The high mortality rate and increasing prevalence of heart valve diseases globally warrant the need for rapid and accurate diagnosis of such diseases. Phonocardiogram (PCG) signals are used in this study due to the low cost of obtaining the signals. This study classifies five types of heart sounds, namely normal, aortic stenosis, mitral valve prolapse, mitral stenosis, and mitral regurgitation.
METHODS: We have proposed a novel in-house developed deep WaveNet model for automated classification of five types of heart sounds. The model is developed using a total of 10

We describe a 29-year-old male, previously in good health, with no history of angina pectoris and no risk factors for ischemic heart disease presenting with biventricular failure and severe mitral valve regurgitation. There were no signs or serological test results to suggest infective endocarditis. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) revealed severe anterior mitral valve prolapse secondary to papillary muscle rupture, severe mitral valve regurgitation, as well as an anterior myocardial wall hypokinesis. Parasternal short-axis view showed an anomalous left coronary artery arising from the pul

Fulminating active rheumatic carditis has been observed for over three decades in this environment with no recent alteration in either the incidence or the pattern of presentation. Heart failure (in this context defined as 'an inadequate circulation at rest together with a raised pulmonary venous pressure, with or without an associated high systemic venous pressure in the absence of haemodynamically significant tricuspid valve disease or pericardial effusion') is prevalent but occurs only when a haemodynamically important left-sided valve lesion supervenes. Regurgitation is the predominant val

Mitral valve disease is a frequent cause of heart failure and death. Emerging evidence indicates that the mitral valve is not a passive structure, but--even in adult life--remains dynamic and accessible for treatment. This concept motivates efforts to reduce the clinical progression of mitral valve disease through early detection and modification of underlying mechanisms. Discoveries of genetic mutations causing mitral valve elongation and prolapse have revealed that growth factor signalling and cell migration pathways are regulated by structural molecules in ways that can be modified to limit

OBJECTIVE: Mitral valve surgery for posterior mitral leaflet prolapse consists mostly of leaflet resection, but implantation of premeasured polytetrafluoroethylene neochordae (ie, loops) is another option. The aim of this prospectively randomized trial was to determine how preservation of leaflet structure in combination with premeasured neochordae compares with the widely adopted technique of leaflet resection.
METHODS: A total of 129 patients with severe mitral regurgitation, with a mean mitral regurgitation grade of 3.6 +/- 0.6, underwent minimal invasive mitral valve surgery through a rig
