OBJECTIVES: This study sought to evaluate the impact of patient-prosthesis mismatch (PPM) on the risk of perioperative, early-, mid- and long-term mortality rates after surgical aortic valve replacement.
METHODS: Databases were searched for studies published until March 2018. The main outcomes of interest were perioperative mortality, 1-year mortality, 5-year mortality and 10-year mortality.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular diverticula are a rare congenital cardiac disorder presenting with an extremely low incidence. The presence of an apical diverticulum of the right ventricle has been associated with other congenital heart diseases such as tetralogy of Fallot. An important defining characteristic of ventricular diverticula that separates them from aneurysms through imaging techniques, is that they possess myocardial contraction synchronous to the adjacent walls, contributing to the ventricular stroke volume, so they do not usually require surgical treatment.

Corynebacterium is a skin commensal bacterium that can contaminate blood cultures. It is however also a rare cause of infective endocarditis (IE). Here we report a case of Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii aortic prosthesis IE in a 76-year-old man where only a single blood culture bottle was positive initially. In 14 patients aged 5-329 (mean 131) months a CarboMedics valve was implanted because of congenital heart disease. The preoperative NYHA function class was III-IV in ten cases. 171 children aged 2-17 years underwent cardiac valve replacement between 1969 and December 1979. Valve lesions were of rheumatic origin in 160 and congenital in 11 cases. Single valve replacement of the mitral valve was performed in 116 cases, of the aortic valve in 18 cases and of the tricuspid valve once. Reiter's syndrome is characterized by multiple joint arthropathy, and can affect the heart. One manifestation of cardiac involvement is aortic insufficiency that may require valve replacement. Herein is reported a case with rapidly progressive and severe calcification of a bovine pericardial prosthesis seven years after implantation, in the setting of Reiter's syndrome. Based on this experience, it is suggested that echocardiographic evaluations be scheduled more frequently than usual if a bioprosthetic rather than mechanical valve is chosen for a patient with Reiter's syndrome.
