Phylogenetic and phenotypic relationships among Triatoma carcavalloi (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) and related species collected in domiciles in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil.

Triatoma carcavalloi is considered a rare Chagas disease vector often collected inside domiciles in Rio Grande do Sul State. In this Brazilian state, T. carcavalloi has been collected in the same ecotope (rock piles) with two other species (T. rubrovaria and T. circummaculata), with which it also shares morphological characteristics. Previous morphological studies placed T. carcavalloi in the same species complex ("infestans complex") and subcomplex ("rubrovaria subcomplex") as T. rubrovaria, whereas T. circummaculata was placed in the "circummaculata complex." The phylogeny of a group compose

Citizen science to complement the surveillance of Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) with data of Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastea: Trypanosomatidae) infection and spatial distribution models in northeast Mexico.

The primary transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease, to humans and animals is through the feces and urine of Triatominae. Therefore, knowledge of their ecology and distribution is crucial for establishing effective surveillance programs with citizen participation. This is coupled with geographic distribution models to predict the risk of transmission in the areas most affected by Chagas disease. Therefore, this study aims to: a) document and validate citizen participation on the iNaturalist in the collection and observation of triatomines, as well as exploring risk

Unraveling acetamiprid resistance in Aphis craccivora (Hemiptera: Aphididae): resistance risk assessment, fitness costs, cross-resistance, biochemical and molecular characterization, and in silico docking study.

Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a major sucking pest of legumes. Neonicotinoid insecticides are extensively utilized for A. craccivora control. The extended use of neonicotinoids, including acetamiprid (ACP) to manage A. craccivora, has led to the development of resistance. However, the potential to delay the development of ACP resistance in A. craccivora has not yet been investigated. Our study aimed to examine the development of ACP resistance in A. craccivora over 20 generations, and the associated heritability (h2), fitness costs, biochemical mechanisms, and potential cross…

Identification, Synthesis, Behavioral Activity, and Field Assessment of Components of the Female-Produced Sex Pheromone of Helopeltis theivora (Hemiptera: Miridae), a Devastating Pest of Tea.

Helopeltis theivora is a major pest of tea, cocoa and cashew, and increasing insecticide resistance highlights the need for sustainable alternatives such as pheromones. Previous studies failed to identify female pheromone components attractive to males in the field. Re-examination of female extracts by gas chromatography with electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) revealed a single active compound, identified by GC-MS as octyl 3-(butanoyloxy)butanoate (III). Enantioselective analysis showed females produce both (3R)-and (3S)-enantiomers. Two related but EAD-inactive compounds, hexyl (3R)-3-(

Integrated analysis of lethal and sublethal effects of rice pesticides on the natural predator Microvelia pulchella (Insecta: Hemiptera: Veliidae): insights into direct and indirect effects.

This study examines the lethal and sublethal effects of the commonly used rice crop pesticides cypermethrin, butachlor, and carbendazim on the broad-shouldered water strider, Microvelia pulchella. Conducted under controlled conditions, the research aimed to elucidate the direct and indirect impacts of these pesticides on key life-history traits of this aquatic predatory insect. Initial dose-response bioassays revealed that cypermethrin was the most toxic, with a median lethal concentration (LC50) of 0.79 ppm, followed by butachlor (LC50 = 2.53 ppm) and carbendazim (LC50 = 15.63 ppm). Quantitative imagery analysis of spot patterns for the three-haplogroup classification of Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), an important vector of Chagas disease.

BACKGROUND: Spots and coloring patterns evaluated quantitatively can be used to discriminate and identify possible cryptic species. Species included in the Triatoma dimidiata (Reduviidae: Triatominae) complex are major disease vectors of Chagas disease. Phylogenetic studies have defined three haplogroups for Mexico and part of Central America. We report here our evaluation of the possibility of correctly discriminating these three T. dimidiata haplogroups using the pattern of the dorsal spots. METHODS: Digital images of the dorsal region of individuals from the three haplogroups were used. Im

Limb Regeneration and Interference Competition Consequences on Foraging Efficiency of Coccinella undecimpunctata and Hippodamia variegata (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) to Their Prey, Aphis craccivora (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Regeneration of limbs lost during development has been recorded in a large number of species of hexapoda including many Coccinellids. Although regeneration has obvious survival and fitness benefits, it has also been demonstrated to impose costs on development, reproduction, and behavior. To investigate consequences of regeneration on foraging behavior, Coccinella undecimpunctata L. and Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) larvae were treated to remove one limb, allowed to pupate and regenerate and then prey searching ability assessed. Different densities of adults were placed in Petri dishes with aphi

The contact toxicity of indoxacarb and five other insecticides to Orius insidiosus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) and Aphidius colemani (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), beneficials used in the greenhouse industry.

The contact toxicity of indoxacarb, abamectin, endosulfan, insecticide soap, S-kinoprene and dimethoate to Orius insidiosus (Say) and Aphidius colemani Viereck were studied in the laboratory. These beneficials are often used in the greenhouses to manage various insect pests. Indoxacarb is slow acting and therefore, to estimate lethal dosages, observations should be continued for several days until data stabilize. Seven days after treatment, the LC50 was 0.119 g AI litre(-1) for O insidiosus adults and 0.019 g AI litre(-1) for A colemani. At that time, the recommended field concentration was 0.

Roles of SfHSP70-7 in Thermal Tolerance, Insecticide Adaptability, and Reproductive Performance Under Combined Environmental Stress of the Rice Pest Sogatella furcifera (Hemiptera: Delphacidae).

Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) regulates the stress tolerance and reproductive ability of insects. In this study, the SfHSP70-7 gene was cloned and identified from the rice pest Sogatella furcifera. SfHSP70-7 encodes a typical cytoplasmic HSP70 protein that has a conserved functional domain and is highly similar to the HSP70 homologous protein of Laodelphax striatellus. SfHSP70-7 was found to be widely expressed across all developmental stages, with the highest levels in nymphs and female adults. In terms of tissue distribution, it was particularly abundant in the gut and ovaries. Its expressio

Revisiting the hybridization processes in the Triatoma brasiliensis complex (Hemiptera, Triatominae): Interspecific genomic compatibility point to a possible recent diversification of the species grouped in this monophyletic complex.

Triatomines are hematophagous insects of great epidemiological importance, since they are vectors of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease. Triatoma brasiliensis complex is a monophyletic group formed by two subspecies and six species: T. b. brasiliensis, T. b. macromelasoma, T. bahiensis, T. juazeirensis, T. lenti, T. melanica, T. petrocchiae and T. sherlocki. The specific status of several species grouped in the T. brasiliensis complex was confirmed from experimental crossing and analysis of reproductive barriers. Thus, we perform interspecific experimental
