Brain-heart connection and the risk of heart attack.

Autonomic functions, such as increased sympathetic and parasympathetic activity and the brain's suprachiasmatic nucleus, higher nervous centres, depression, hostility and aggression appear to be important determinants of heart rate variability (HRV), which is, itself, an important risk factor of myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, sudden death, heart failure and atherosclerosis. The circadian rhythm of these complications with an increased occurrence in the second quarter of the day may be due to autonomic dysfunction as well as to the presence of excitatory brain and heart tissues. While incr

Vagal response is involved in the occurrence of ventricular fibrillation in patients with early repolarization syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patients with early repolarization syndrome (ERS) and Brugada syndrome (BruS) have comparable clinical symptoms. In both conditions, ventricular fibrillation (VF) is experienced often near midnight or in the early morning hours when the parasympathetic tone is augmented. However, differences between ERS and BruS regarding the risk of VF occurrence have recently been reported. The role of vagal activity remains especially unclear. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine the relationship between VF occurrence and autonomic nervous activity in patients with ERS and BruS.

Alterations of autonomic nervous activity and energy metabolism by capsaicin ingestion during aerobic exercise in healthy men.

We investigated whether capsaicin ingestion (150 mg) enhances substrate oxidation associated with thermogenic sympathetic activity as an energy metabolic modulator without causing prolongation of the cardiac OT interval during aerobic exercise in humans. Ten healthy males [24.4 (4.3) y] volunteered for this study. The cardiac autonomic nervous activities evaluated by means of heart rate variability of power spectral analysis, energy metabolism, and ECG QT interval were continuously measured during 5-min rest and 30-min exercise at 50% of maximal ventilatory threshold (50% VT(max)) on a station

Intense sympathetic nerve activity in adults with hypopituitarism and untreated growth hormone deficiency.

Perturbations in the sympathetic nervous system may be anticipated in adults with hypopituitarism and untreated GH deficiency, because the syndrome is associated with both peripheral and central factors known to modulate sympathetic traffic. The higher prevalence of hypertension and increased cardiovascular morbidity/mortality reported in GH-deficient patients may suggest increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system. We recorded muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in 10 hypopituitary adults with adequate hormonal replacement therapy except GH and in 10 healthy controls matched for

Brain activity during a public-speaking situation in virtual reality in patients with irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial stress plays a central role in the pathophysiology of disorders of gut-brain interactions (DGBI), including functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Brain activity during psychosocial stress in patients with DGBI has not been adequately investigated. In this prospective study, we aimed to explore brain activity during psychosocial stress in patients with DGBI. METHODS: Situations in an unmanned room, public space without attention, and public speaking were simulated in a virtual reality (VR) environment. Subjective stress, emotional state, and gas

Effects of consciously controlled slow breathing on cardiac parasympathetic nervous activity postexercise in young healthy males.

The purpose of the present study was to clarify the effects of consciously controlled slow breathing on cardiac parasympathetic nervous activity Postexercise. Fifteen young healthy adult men participated in this study. They exercised on the bicycle ergometer at 50% of peak oxygen uptake for 10 min and then rested on the chair for 10 min. Two conditions were performed, namely slow breathing at 6 breaths per minute (SLOW) and spontaneous breathing (CON) at recovery phase in randomized order. We measured the oxygen uptake (V̇O2), respiratory rate (RR), minute ventilation (V̇E), tidal volume (VT),

Brain distribution and metabolic profiling of 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone in rats investigated by UHPLC-HRMS/MS following peripheral administration.

4-(Methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) is known to be a tobacco-specific N-nitrosamine and has peripheral carcinogenic properties. It can also induce oxidative stress, glial cell activation, and neuronal damage in the brain. However, the distribution and metabolic characteristics of NNK in the central nervous system are still unclear. Here, a sensitive and effective UHPLC-HRMS/MS method was established to identify and investigate the metabolites of NNK and their distribution in the rat brain. In addition, the pharmacokinetic profiles were simultaneously investigated via blood-bra

Chemistry-based molecular signature underlying the atypia of clozapine.

The central nervous system is functionally organized as a dynamic network of interacting neural circuits that underlies observable behaviors. At higher resolution, these behaviors, or phenotypes, are defined by the activity of a specific set of biomolecules within those circuits. Identification of molecules that govern psychiatric phenotypes is a major challenge. The only organic molecular entities objectively associated with psychiatric phenotypes in humans are drugs that induce psychiatric phenotypes and drugs used for treatment of specific psychiatric conditions. Here, we identified candida

GERD and obesity: is the autonomic nervous system the missing link?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common chronic condition that not only impairs the quality of life of those who are affected by it but also poses a significant economic burden. It encompasses a wide spectrum of symptoms as a result of gastric content moving into the esophagus. The most common cause of GERD, other than a hiatus hernia, is considered to be transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) normally has a higher resting tone than the stomach, thus preventing the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. The greater prevalence of

Sex differences in Black Veterans with PTSD: women versus men have higher sympathetic activity, inflammation, and blunted cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity.

PURPOSE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with greater risk of incident hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Inflammation and autonomic derangements are suggested as contributing mechanisms. Women and Black adults have higher CVD risk associated with stress; however, whether there is a sex difference in autonomic and inflammatory mechanisms among Black individuals with PTSD is not known. We hypothesized that Black women with PTSD have higher inflammation, sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity and impaired baroreflex sensitivity (BRS). METHODS: In 42 Black Vete

Central nervous system monoaminergic activity in hip osteoarthritis patients with disabling pain: associations with pain severity and central sensitization.

INTRODUCTION: Monoaminergic activity modulates nociceptive transmission in the central nervous system (CNS). Although pain is the most disabling symptom of osteoarthritis (OA), limited knowledge exists regarding the CNS mechanisms that amplify pain and drive sensitization processes in humans. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study was to evaluate associations between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) monoamine metabolites, pain severity, and central sensitization in patients with OA undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). METHODS: Patients with OA (n = 52) and pain-free controls (n = 30) prov

The elderly psychiatric patient with positive syphilis serology: the problem of neurosyphilis.

OBJECTIVE: Older patients have a high prevalence of neurological and psychiatric disorders. They also have a baseline prevalence of late latent syphilis or positive syphilis serology. Thus the clinical question arises as to whether a neuropsychiatric disorder in a geriatric patient is neurosyphilis or if the positive serology is incidental. METHOD: An illustrative case example is used to illustrate this dilemma. The relevant literature is reviewed. RESULTS: The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein is an important indicator of inflammatory activity in the central nervous system and is used as a

IL-4/IL-13-dependent alternative activation of macrophages but not microglial cells is associated with uncontrolled cerebral cryptococcosis.

Both interleukin (IL)-4- and IL-13-dependent Th2-mediated immune mechanisms exacerbate murine Cryptococcus neoformans-induced bronchopulmonary disease. To study the roles of IL-4 and IL-13 in cerebral cryptococcosis, IL-4 receptor alpha-deficient (IL-4Ralpha(-/-)), IL-4-deficient (IL-4(-/-)), IL-13-deficient (IL-13(-/-)), IL-13 transgenic (IL-13(T/+)), and wild-type mice were infected intranasally. IL-13(T/+) mice displayed a higher fungal brain burden than wild-type mice, whereas the brain burdens of IL-4Ralpha(-/-), IL-4(-/-), and IL-13(-/-) mice were significantly lower as compared with wil

Studies on the nonspecific central nervous system effects of the novel antitussive compound vadocaine hydrochloride.

Vadocaine hydrochloride (2',4'-dimethyl-6'-methoxy-3-(2-methylpiperidyl) propionanilide hydrochloride, OR K-242-HCl; INN: vadocaine) is a novel antitussive compound which is effective in several animal models at doses of 2.5-6 mg/kg. It has both central and peripheral local anaesthetizing properties. The present studies were aimed at exploring the specificity of the central antitussive activity of vadocaine. Vadocaine administered in doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg was not found to be effective in any of a series of experiments, although some antinociceptive activity was shown in the hotplate test an

Sex differences in the parasympathetic nerve control of rat heart.

1. As it has been shown that oestrogen enhances the cholinergic muscarinic activity in the central nervous system, we studied sex differences in the response to parasympathetic nervous stimulation in the rat heart using in vivo and in vitro preparations. 2. In in situ perfused, innervated hearts, stimulation of bilateral vagus nerves (15 Hz with 1 mumol/L physostigmine) inhibited sympathetic nerve stimulation (5 Hz) induced noradrenaline release to a greater extent in female than in male rats (54 +/- 5 vs 72 +/- 5% of control). Similarly, vagus nerve stimulation at 1-20 Hz reduced heart rate (
