[Medical history without purpose? On the medical history aspects of Théophile de Bordeau (1764)].

Théophile de Bordeu (1722-1776) published in 1764 a large Medical History. He used it for a discussion of the pros and contras of smallpox inoculation by giving the hypothetical opinions of ancient physicians who could not have known that new method. As he was at that time unjustifiedly involved in a theft-scandal, he used his book also for ridiculising his enemies among his colleagues.

Case Report: History-Indicated McDonald's Cerclage for Uterine Didelphys and History of Cervical Insufficiency.

INTRODUCTION: Mullerian anomalies alone are not an indication for prophylactic and history indicated cerclage (HIC). Data on the use of cerclage for patients with mullerian anomalies is therefore limited to case reports of ultrasound indicated cerclage (UIC) and physical exam indicated cerclage (PIC). Given these limitations, there is a hesitancy towards cerclage use in this subset of patients. This case report aims to highlight that HIC is a safe and effective intervention for patients with mullerian anomalies and a history of cervical insufficiency (CI). CASE: We present a case of a patient…

The Perception of History: Seeing Causal History in Static Shapes Induces Illusory Motion Perception.

The perception of shape, it has been argued, also often entails the perception of time. A cookie missing a bite, for example, is seen as a whole cookie that was subsequently bitten. It has never been clear, however, whether such observations truly reflect visual processing. To explore this possibility, we tested whether the perception of history in static shapes could actually induce illusory motion perception. Observers watched a square change to a truncated form, with a "piece" of it missing, and they reported whether this change was sudden or gradual. When the contours of the missing piece …

Bipolar II disorder family history using the family history screen: findings and clinical implications.

Psychiatric family history of bipolar II disorder is understudied. The aims of the current study were to find the psychiatric family history of bipolar II patients using a new structured interview, the Family History Screen by Weissman et al (2000), and to find bipolar disorders family history predicting power for the diagnosis of bipolar II. One hundred sixty-four consecutive unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) and 241 consecutive bipolar II major depressive episode (MDE) outpatients were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID). The Family History Screen was …

Differentiation of alcoholics. Childhood history of minimal brain dysfunction, family history, and drinking pattern.

Alcoholics were differentiated into two subgroups on the basis of drinking patterns and subjective response to alcohol. Severe drinkers (primary alcoholics) retrospectively reported more symptoms of childhood minimal brain dysfunction than less severe drinkers (secondary alcoholics), psychiatric patients, and normals. The alcoholics as a group reported a greater incidence of familial alcohol abuse than the psychiatric subjects, but a difference on this factor was not observed between the primary and secondary subgroups. In terms of clinical status, the primary alcoholics presented Minnesota Mu

[The nasopharynx and pharyngeal tonsil in the history of otology and rhinology. Pictures from the history of otorhinolaryngology, presented by instruments from the collection of the Ingolstadt Medical History Museum].

Anatomy, nomenclature, first clinical observations: In ancient Greece and Rome and in the Middle Ages the posterior opening of the nasal passage was known (Greek "choane" = funnel) as an atomical structure, and it was also known that chronic nasal catarrh is common in children, but it was not realized that this was associated with special pathological alterations. The anatomist H. von Luschka in Tübingen, Germany, was the first to describe the nasopharynx in detail, and he coined the term "pharyngeal tonsil." The otologists of the 19th century like Kramer and Toynbee had placed the Eustachian

Gapmers: Invention and Early History.

Gapmers are antisense oligonucleotides composed of a central DNA segment flanked by nucleotides of modified chemistry. Hybridizing with transcripts by sequence complementarity, gapmers recruit ribonuclease H and induce target RNA degradation. Since its concept first emerged in the 1980s, much work has gone into developing gapmers for use in basic research and therapy. These include improvements in gapmer chemistry, delivery, and therapeutic safety. Gapmers have also successfully entered clinical trials for various genetic disorders, with two approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for

Natural History of Lumbar Spondylolisthesis.

The natural history of spondylolisthesis remains inadequately understood, and an optimal treatment algorithm has not yet been clearly established. A better understanding of the natural history is crucial for guiding surgical decision-making. In this article, we aimed to characterize the natural course of spondylolisthesis, focusing on slip progression and destabilization risk. Analysis of the natural history of both degenerative and isthmic spondylolisthesis based on radiographic parameters and prospective studies indicates that slip progression occurs in approximately one-third of patients ov…

Blue balls: a brief history.

INTRODUCTION: Blue balls is a mundane complaint that generates substantive popular lore but has little coverage in the sexual medicine literature. OBJECTIVES: To draft a first medical history of relevant nosology and etiology. METHODS: The Latin, French, German, Dutch, Italian, and English literature was mined. RESULTS: As expected from a period of not only widespread scaremongering concerning masturbation and "semen loss" but also "overly rigid continence," scrotal pain reminiscent of blue balls was well covered between the 1820s and 1920s, under variably inclusive nosologic headings: "her…

Natural History of Lung Hernias.

BACKGROUND: Lung herniation has been described in case reports or series. There are scare data in the form of original research studies to systematically evaluate this condition. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate lung hernias with a focus on their natural history. METHODS: This is a retrospective study at our institution of patients who were found to have lung herniation on imaging between September 2010 and November 2022. Electronic medical record review was performed to extract clinical information regarding patients. Computed tomographic imaging was used to evaluate hernia size and size …

Neuroendoscopy: history, endoscopes, and instrumentation.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopy was first employed in the surgical treatment of neurosurgical diseases early in the twentieth century, but did not become an established practice for a long time, mainly because of poor technology and clinical results. After a slow re-appearance in the 1980s, the 1990s saw an explosion of techniques and instrumentation. Continuing technological improvement has led to further expansion of surgical techniques and indications for use of neuroendoscopy. DISCUSSION: The expansion of ventricular endoscopy has led to significant understanding of CSF disorders. Aqueduct stenos

Radioactive Iodine: A Living History.

Background: Before the development of antithyroid drugs in the 1940s, treatment of Graves' hyperthyroidism was primarily surgical. Surgical mortality was quite variable, but a significant minority of patients died during or after surgery. Summary: In 1936, Karl Compton, President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in a lecture attended by Massachusetts General Hospital physicians, suggested that artificially radioactive isotopes might be useful for studying metabolism. By 1942, Hertz and Roberts reported on the successful use of radioactive iodine (RAI) to treat Graves' hyperthyroid

Surgical history of Hirschsprung disease.

Harald Hirschsprung presented the first comprehensive and detailed description of clinical outcomes in patients with congenital megacolon. In the century following his discovery, we have seen realization of the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of Hirschsprung disease. In this article we describe the surgical management of Hirschsprung disease starting with Orvar Swenson, who pioneered the field with the first full thickness transrectal dissection followed by several additional innovative surgeons who have contributed to the modifications that have brought us to the modern surgical management

History of Endoscopic Ear Surgery.

The introduction of the microscope to ear surgery by Wullstein has been a transformative event in ear surgery. The ability to visualize disease and anatomy has resulted in more effective surgery and better functional outcomes. Many surgical disciplines have adapted the endoscope as the instrument of choice to access and correct internal pathology without disruption of overlying tissue. Multiple discussions and attempts at using the endoscope in ear surgery over the years have culminated in the development of transcanal endoscopic ear surgery. This article discusses the integration of the endos

Natural history of extraparenchymal neurocysticercosis.

BACKGROUND: In patients affected by neurocysticercosis (NCC), the extraparenchymal location of the parasites generates the most severe form of the disease. Due to the difficulty in its diagnosis and management, there are still many questions; in particular, the natural history of parasites at this location is not well known. METHODS: We included 21 patients with vesicular extraparenchymal NCC who had not received treatment for at least 18 months. We collected their demographic and clinical data, compared their imaging studies at the beginning and the end of the period without treatment and cl…

History of Myasthenia Gravis Revisited.

The first description of myasthenia gravis (MG) was given by Thomas Willis in 1672. MG was the focus of attention after mid-nineteenth century and a great amount of information has been accumulated in a span of 150 years. The aim of this review is to convey this information according to a particular systematic and to briefly relate the experience of Istanbul University. MG history was examined in four periods: 1868-1930, 1930-1960, 1960-1990, and 1990-2020. In the first period (1868-1930), all the clinical characteristics of MG were defined. Physiological/pharmacological studies on the transmi…

History of WOFAPS (1963-2019).

The formation of the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgery (WOFAPS) was an important unifying force in the emergence of pediatric surgery as a distinct specialty. Beginning with the formation of several national societies in the early '60s, an early, multinational effort was created. This was in large part fostered by the International Pediatric Association (IPA), which lent logistical support from the medical pediatric community to the pediatric surgeons. In 2001, the mission of the Federation was formalized to focus on the development and education of surgeons serving childre

Natural history of intracranial meningiomas.

We know that the extent of resection is the greatest predictor of long-term survival. However, the potential tradeoff for gross total resection in difficult locations is diminished quality of life. Benign subtotally resected or small incidentally discovered meningiomas may be followed clinically especially in the elderly. In addition, radiosurgery plays a role in the treatment of meningiomas as a primary treatment modality, or as a salvage therapy. Decisions regarding management should be made with an understanding of the natural history and rate of growth. In this chapter we review the known …

Pediatric ACL Tears: Natural History.

BACKGROUND: Increased participation in youth sports is associated with increased rates of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears in the skeletally immature. Historically, ACL reconstruction was avoided in the skeletally immature, or delayed until skeletal maturity, to avoid physeal injury and growth disturbance. Current practices and meta-analyses support early ACL reconstruction in some groups, to allow for return to activities and to avoid delayed cartilage/meniscus injury. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article was to report on the natural history of ACL injuries in the skeletally immature. …
