The authors studied immune homeostasis parameters in chromium production workers and presented changes in cellular, humoral immunity and sensibilization to chromium in main occupational groups of workers. Findings are that occupational contact with chromium compounds results in T-immune deficiency. Allergic tests also revealed higher sensibilization to 6-valent chromium.

Cholesterol, being the starting point of steroid hormone synthesis, is a long known modulator of both female and male reproductive physiology especially at the level of the gonads and the impact cholesterol has on gametogenesis. Less is known about the effects cholesterol homeostasis may have on postgonadic reproductive functions. Lately, several data have been reported showing how imbalanced cholesterol levels may particularly affect the post-testicular events of sperm maturation that lead to fully fertile male gametes. This review will focus on that aspect and essentially centers on how chol…

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) plays an essential role in regulating calcium and bone homeostasis in the adult, but whether PTH is required at all for regulating fetal-placental mineral homeostasis and skeletal development is uncertain. We hypothesized that despite its low circulating levels during fetal life, PTH plays a critical role in regulating these processes. To address this, we examined two different genetic models of PTH deficiency. Pth null mice have enlarged parathyroids that are incapable of making PTH, whereas Gcm2 null mice lack parathyroids but have PTH that arises from the thymus. P…

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder caused by an increased number of CAG repeats in the HTT gene. Apart from neurological impairment, the disease is also accompanied by progressive weight loss, abnormalities in fat and glucose homeostasis and a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus, the causes of which are unknown. Therefore, a detailed analysis of systemic energy homeostasis in HD patients in relation to disease characteristics was performed.
METHODS: Indirect calorimetry combined with a hyperinsulinaemic-euglycaemic clamp with stable isotopes ([…

Over the past decades, the clinical relevance and biological significance of Mg2+ have been thoroughly documented. Although multiple Mg2+-transport pathways have been biophysically characterized, the molecular identity of the postulated components of Mg2+-homeostasis regulation in vertebrates remain undefined. Recent advances in the fields of genetics, genomics and proteomics, and novel technologies such as cDNA microarrays have allowed for substantial progress in this area. The mitochondrial Mrs2 protein was the first human Mg2+ transporter characterized as such, and an important element for …

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of vitamin D intake and production in skin on vitamin D homeostasis in adult Icelanders.
METHODS: Participants were 30-85 years old, randomly selected from the registry of the Reykjavik area (64 degrees N) and answered a thorough questionnaire on diet and vitamin supplements. Concentrations of 25(OH)-vitamin D [25(OH)D] in peripheral blood were examined based on season during the study period February 2001-January 2003, vitamin D intake and age (age groups 30-45, 50-65, and 70-85 years old). We defined vitamin D deficiency as eit…

Resistin is an adipocyte-secreted protein that circulates at increased levels in obesity. Acute administration of resistin impairs glucose tolerance, but the effects of chronic hyperresistinemia have not been established. Here we describe the generation and characterization of transgenic mice that have high circulating levels of resistin in the setting of normal weight. Fasted blood glucose was higher in resistin-transgenic mice than in their nontransgenic littermates, and glucose tolerance was impaired in the hyperresistinemic mice. Metabolic studies in the setting of a hyperinsulinemic-eugly

This paper describes (a) the influence of glucose on carotid chemoreceptor activity, and (b) the participation of carotid receptors in glucose homeostasis. After eliminating the carotid body baroreceptors in anesthetized cats, the injection of glucose to the vascularly isolated carotid sinus region reduced by 20% the electrical activity of carotid body chemoreceptors and increased their threshold to hypoxia. Mannitol in the same concentration did not change the chemoreceptor activity. A decrease in baroreceptor activity elicited by carotid occlusion, or carotid chemoreceptor stimulation with 5…

The wide application of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) in various fields such as medicine, food, agriculture, and animal husbandry can result in direct or indirect oral exposure of CuO NPs to the human body. Therefore, the research on the biosafety of CuO NPs is crucially important. However, previous research mainly concentrated on CuO NPs-induced oxidative stress, rather than the dysregulation of metabolic homeostasis. Our current finding indicates that CuO NPs can enter the systemic circulation and accumulate in the liver by being adopted by the colon and disrupting the intestinal barr…

The primary cilium (plural 'cilia') is a highly specialized organelle found on nearly every vertebrate cell. It functions as a sensor, cell cycle regulator and coordinator of multiple signalling transduction pathways. In cholangiocytes, primary cilia extend from the cell surface into the bile duct lumen, acting as chemosensors, mechanosensors and osmosensors in response to changes in bile composition and flow. This primary-cilium-mediated sensing regulates the biliary microenvironment and is crucial to maintaining homeostasis and promoting biliary regeneration. Moreover, alterations in the str…

Prolactin (PRL) is a pleiotropic hormone that regulates diverse physiological processes beyond lactation through activation of the prolactin receptor (PRLR). The liver expresses high levels of PRLR and represents an important target organ for PRL signaling. However, the biological functions of hepatic PRLR, particularly those mediated by its multiple receptor isoforms, remain incompletely understood. In this review, we summarize current evidence regarding PRL/PRLR signaling in liver homeostasis and disease, with a focus on studies in rodents and humans. We first discuss the molecular diversity…

The mammalian intestinal epithelium is a rapid self-renewal tissue in the body, serving as a critical interface between the host and the external environment. Maintaining the intestinal epithelium homeostasis requires precise coordination of cellular processes, including proliferation, migration, differentiation, autophagy, and cell-to-cell interaction. An increasing body of evidence has unveiled circular RNAs (circRNAs) as abundant and stable regulatory molecules that play pivotal roles in the intestinal epithelial biology and are intimately involved in many aspects of gut mucosal pathologies…

Systemic iron homeostasis is governed by hepcidin through regulation of the iron exporter ferroportin. Hepcidin expression is primarily regulated by the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-SMAD signaling pathway, which integrates signals from iron status, erythropoietic demand, and inflammation. Fibrinogen-like protein 1 (FGL1) has recently emerged as a hepatocyte-derived regulator of this axis. FGL1 is a secreted hepatokine which is induced by hypoxia, inflammatory signaling, and metabolic stress. FGL1 suppresses hepcidin by binding BMP ligands, thereby attenuating BMP-SMAD signaling and reducin…

JmjC-domain-containing oxygenases are conserved epigenetic regulators whose dysfunction is closely associated with various human diseases. JMJD5, a key member of the JmjC-Domain-Only subfamily, has multiple enzymatic activities and modulates various vital physiological and pathological processes via catalytic and non-catalytic pathways. JMJD5 also displays striking tissue-specific duality in cancer: it is frequently overexpressed and acts as an oncogene in breast, prostate, and oral squamous cell carcinomas, yet is downregulated and functions as a tumor suppressor in lung, hepatocellular, and
