A 45-year-old man developed Horner's syndrome after sustaining an intraoral gunshot in a suicide attempt. Examination did not show any major vascular injury or other neurological symptoms. Radiograph of the skull and helical computed tomography angiography of the brain and neck detected a bullet embedded in the interior of the left internal carotid artery (ICA) sheath. Surgical examination showed an intact left ICA. Horner's syndrome resulting from intraoral trauma rarely presents as an isolated sign and is generally associated with carotid injuries. It may herald a life-threatening artery inj

A seventeen-year-old girl presented with acute otitis media, unilateral miosis and ptosis (partial Horner's syndrome) and tenderness of the ipsilateral jugular vein. A culture of the otorrhoea showed Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. A CT scan revealed an infiltrate near the ipsilateral carotid artery and jugular vein. The patient was hospitalised and treated with antibiotics. Clinical signs disappeared within 6 days. This report discusses the first case with a partial Horner's syndrome as an unusual complication of acute otitis media (AOM). Imaging studies suggest extracranial

BACKGROUND: Injury to the cervical sympathetic chain and its consequence, Horner's syndrome, as a result of thyroid pathology or surgical intervention is an uncommon complication. The purpose of the present study was to examine the experience of one endocrine surgical unit with pre and postoperative Horner's syndrome.
METHODS: This is a retrospective case series. The study group comprised all patients undergoing thyroid and parathyroid surgery at Royal North Shore Hospital from January 2000 to October 2003 who were identified as having either pre or postoperative Horner's syndrome. Patient de

PURPOSE: To highlight that internal carotid artery dissection is a common cause of Horner's syndrome and that it is important to diagnose dissection as anticoagulation can prevent carotid thrombosis and embolism.
METHODS: Five case reports are presented of patients with Horner's syndrome secondary to carotid dissection. One patient had carotid dissection secondary to trauma, two had spontaneous dissections and two had dissections in the settings of other illness. A literature search was performed on carotid dissection as a cause of Horner's syndrome and its diagnosis and management.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas are rare tumors arising from paraganglionic tissue of neural crest origin. They are present in any location where autonomic ganglia are found. The most common location in the head and neck is the carotid body, followed by the jugular bulb and vagus nerve.
METHODS: A 30-year-old woman with a slowly growing left neck mass, aniscoria, and left eyelid ptosis was found to have a vascular tumor consistent with a paraganglioma arising near the left carotid bifurcation. After preoperative embolization, the patient underwent resection of the tumor.
RESULTS: The tumor was fo
