Validity of Italian administrative healthcare data in describing the real-world utilization of infusive antineoplastic drugs: the study case of rituximab use in patients treated at the University Hospital of Siena for onco-haematological indications.

INTRODUCTION: Italian administrative healthcare databases are frequently used for studies on real-world drug utilization. However, there is currently a lack of evidence on the accuracy of administrative data in describing the use of infusive antineoplastics. In this study, we used rituximab as a case study to investigate the validity of the regional administrative healthcare database of Tuscany (RAD) in describing the utilization of infusive antineoplastics. METHODS: We identified patients aged 18 years or older who had received ≥1 rituximab administration between 2011 and 2014 in the onco-ha

Attributable mortality due to fluoroquinolone and extended-spectrum cephalosporin resistance in hospital-onset Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp bacteremia: A matched cohort study in 129 Veterans Health Administration medical centers.

In this cohort of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp hospital-onset bacteremia, isolated fluoroquinolone resistance had a larger relative impact on mortality than other phenotypic resistance patterns. This finding may support stewardship efforts targeting unnecessary fluoroquinolone use and increased attention from infection prevention and control departments.

Tolerability and efficacy of single dose albendazole, diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC) or co-administration of albendazole with DEC in the clearance of Wuchereria bancrofti in asymptomatic microfilaraemic volunteers in Pondicherry, South India: a hospital-based study.

BACKGROUND: The tolerability and efficacy of single dose albendazole (400 mg), diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC) (6 mg/kg bodyweight) or co-administration of albendazole (400 mg) + DEC (6 mg/kg bodyweight) was studied in 54 asymptomatic Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaraemic volunteers in a double blind hospital-based clinical study. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the overall incidence of adverse reactions between the three drug groups [42.1% (albendazole), 52.9% (DEC) and 61.1% (albendazole + DEC); P > 0.05]. The mean score of adverse reaction intensity did not differ significan

Early administration of ivabradine in patients with acute anterior ST-elevation myocardial infarction: a prospective, randomized, open-label study on in-hospital and short-term major adverse cardiac events and left ventricular function.

BACKGROUND: Elevated heart rate (HR) in acute anterior ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) increases myocardial oxygen demand and limits perfusion, worsening outcomes. Ivabradine selectively reduces HR without negative inotropy. This open-label randomized controlled study investigates the efficacy and safety of early ivabradine administration in patients with acute anterior STEMI. METHODS: This randomized controlled prospective study included 300 patients with acute anterior STEMI (sinus rhythm, HR > 70 bpm) at Ain Shams University hospitals. Patients were randomized 1:1 to receive eit

Hospital admissions among adolescents with local authority care experience or special educational needs in England: a population-based cohort study using linked administrative data from health, education and social care services.

INTRODUCTION: Children and young people in state care or with special educational needs (SEN) experience disproportionately higher rates of long-term physical and mental illness compared with their peers. However, few large-scale studies have explored the intersection of social care, education systems and healthcare services during adolescence. We aimed to quantify planned and unplanned hospital admissions during adolescence for pupils with SEN and/or experience of state care in England. METHODS: We analysed linked administrative records from hospital, education and social care systems for ad

Lack of hospital resilience as the main challenge of hospital management during the COVID-19 pandemic: A grounded theory study.

BackgroundTraditional hospital management responses during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic proved ineffective, particularly considering the pre-existing challenges in healthcare systems. The study examines hospital management challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, transforming their lived experiences into a conceptual approach to prevent repetition and benefit health planners and policymakers in future crises and normal times.MethodsThis qualitative study utilized the grounded theory methodology, conducting in-depth interviews with 12 hospital administrators from seven major…

Executive rounding program improves communication, performance.

A patient safety executive rounding program at St. Charles Hospital, Port Jefferson, NY, has united staff and helped to identify a number of performance issues. The success of the program has even surprised top administrators who pushed to have it implemented. Each month, teams of executive staff and department heads make rounds through all areas of the hospital, talking with staff, identifying problem areas and noting best practices that could be used in other departments.

Code of ethics could unify personnel administrators.

A variety of factors, such as federal protective labor legislation and unionism, have pushed personnel administration into the forefront of hospital management. The added responsibility brought on by these factors and the growing number of people entering the field have created a burgeoning profession that will require guidance with regard to ethical principles of practice.
