Hemogram parameters can predict in-hospital mortality of patients with Myasthenic crisis.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease involving the neuromuscular junction. Myasthenic crisis (MC), which is character … of MC patients has not been established. METHODS: To identify whether hemogram data can predict in-hospital mortality in patients with MC, we retrospectively investigated 188 myasthenic crisis events from the Chang Gung Research Database between April 2001 and March 2019. Demographic and clinical characteristics were collected, as well as hemogram data before intub …

Artificial intelligence to predict in-hospital mortality using novel anatomical injury score.

The aim of the study is to develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm based on a deep learning model to predict mortality using abbreviate injury score (AIS). The performance of the conventional anatomic injury severity score (ISS) system in predicting in-hospital mortality is still limited. AIS data of 42,933 patients registered in the Korean trauma data bank from four Korean regional trauma centers were enrolled. After excluding patients who were younger than 19 years old and those who died within six hours from arrival, we included 37,762 patients, of which 36,493 (96.6%) survived and 1…

Surgical, Obstetric, and Anesthetic Mortality Measurement at a Ugandan Secondary Referral Hospital.

BACKGROUND: The health care systems of low-income countries have severely limited capacity to treat surgical diseases and conditions. There is limited information about which hospital mortality outcomes are suitable metrics in these settings. METHODS: We did a 1-year observational cohort study of patient admissions to the Surgery and the Obstetrics and Gynecology departments and of newborns delivered at a Ugandan secondary referral hospital. We examined the proportion of deaths captured by standardized metrics of mortality. RESULTS: There were 17,015 admissions and 9612 deliveries. A total o…

Association of methicillin resistance with mortality of hospital-acquired Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.

OBJECTIVE: Methicillin-resistant (MR) Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) is associated with higher mortality rates than methicillin-susceptible (MS) SAB. This study assessed potential predictors of mortality and evaluated the association of methicillin resistance with mortality in patients with SAB. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in patients with hospital-acquired SAB, from 2009 to 2018. Clinical features of patients with MR-SAB were compared with those of patients with MS-SAB and predictors of 30-day mortality were determined using Cox regression analysis. RESULTS: A

Patient and hospital factors associated with induction mortality in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Deaths during induction chemotherapy for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) account for one-tenth of ALL-associated mortality and half of ALL treatment-related mortality. We sought to ascertain patient- and hospital-level factors associated with induction mortality. PROCEDURE: We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of 8,516 children ages 0 to <19 years with newly diagnosed ALL admitted to freestanding US children's hospitals from 1999 to 2009 using the Pediatric Health Information System database. Induction mortality risk was modeled accounting for demographics, in

Inappropriate prehospital ventilation in severe traumatic brain injury increases in-hospital mortality.

In the setting of acute brainstem herniation in traumatic brain injury (TBI), the use of hyperventilation to reduce intracranial pressure may be life-saving. However, undue use of hyperventilation is thought to increase the incidence of secondary brain injury through direct reduction of cerebral blood flow. This is a retrospective review determining the effect of prehospital hyperventilation on in-hospital mortality following severe TBI. All trauma patients admitted directly to a single level 1 trauma center from January 2000 to January 2007 with an initial Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score <or=8…
