This paper explores the use of Housing First services for women experiencing homelessness, focusing on those aged 35 and over, who have multiple and complex needs. The paper draws on an evidence review and the results of a five-year evaluation of a Housing First for Women pilot project (2015-20) and three-year longitudinal study of two further Housing First services for Women in the UK (2021-24), which centred on the lived experience of women using these services. Four main arguments are advanced. The first is that the original Housing First model from the US and the initial deployments of the…

BACKGROUND: Housing wealth can be leveraged to maintain economic security when expenses exceed income, allowing households flexibility when managing a new chronic disease diagnosis. We linked housing and electronic health record (EHR) data to examine how housing wealth and stability relate to type 2 diabetes (T2D) outcomes.
METHODS: EHR data from patients diagnosed with T2D were linked to housing data (tenure, foreclosure, home equity, reverse mortgage, and loan-to-value ratio) using residential address. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to estimate associations between housing…

BACKGROUND: Patients experiencing houselessness/housing insecurity have increased morbidity and mortality compared with stably housed (nonhouselessness/housing insecurity) populations, but their long-term outcomes after traumatic injury are understudied. We sought to describe these outcomes and evaluate their association with houselessness/housing insecurity, after accounting for measured confounding factors.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of adult patients admitted to an urban, level 1 trauma center, July 1, 2015-May 31, 2023, with an Injury Severity Score ≥9 who completed a validated p…

Culture-independent techniques are playing a major role in exploring unique and novel microbial communities from complex ecosystems, leading to an outstanding impact on our basic understanding of the tree of life. Microbial communities are not extensively studied in layer chicken housing environments, particularly from the point of view of taxa carrying antimicrobial resistance genes, virulence genes and their functional potential. This study aimed to extract metagenomic-assembled genomes (MAGs) from the Illumina short-reads shotgun metagenomics sequenced data that originated from an Alberta p…

IMPORTANCE: Eviction and housing loss are pressing public health concerns. Understanding how caregivers' stress about eviction or loss of housing is associated with specific childhood psychiatric issues across development is important.
OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between stress about eviction or loss of housing and caregiver-reported child depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and behavioral problems, while adjusting for sociodemographic factors.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2022 National Survey of…

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related harms - including acute and chronic harms as well as those partially- and fully-attributable to alcohol consumption - incur a substantial public health burden. Understanding the potential associations between structural factors, such as housing eviction, and alcohol-related harms could elucidate important opportunities for reducing this burden. Therefore, the objective of this review is to assess what current research shows about the associations between eviction and alcohol-related harms.
METHODS: Using PubMed/Medline, APA PsycINFO, and Web of Science, we conducte…

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that the effectiveness of environmental intervention is crucial in reducing levels of the mouse allergen Mus musculus (Mus m 1) in inner-city homes. However, the impact of mouse control alone on mouse allergen reduction has not been studied.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of 3 house mouse control programs on mouse allergen reduction.
METHODS: A total of 18 buildings in 3 cities in New Jersey were randomly divided and assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: (1) trapping and baiting (T&B); (2) trapping, baiting, and rodent exclusion

OBJECTIVES: Homelessness is associated with poor health outcomes and increased healthcare utilization. The existing roles of social workers and case managers often are inadequate in addressing the complexity of patients' housing-specific needs. Our intervention aimed to pilot a novel housing support navigator (HSN) role within the existing electronic medical record workflow at one large safety-net hospital.
METHODS: This innovation encompassed 877 adult patients with defined housing needs at Grady Health System (GHS), a large academic safety-net hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. All social worker…

BACKGROUND: Rising housing prices are becoming a top public health priority and are an emerging concern for policy makers and community leaders. This report reviews and synthesizes evidence examining the association between changes in housing price and health outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review by searching the SCOPUS and PubMed databases for keywords related to housing price and health. Articles were screened by two reviewers for eligibility, which restricted inclusion to original research articles measuring changes in housing prices and health outcomes, published …

The purpose of this study was to describe the feasibility of implementing interdisciplinary senior housing clinics. Feasibility was based on evidence of resident participation, services provided, improvement in clinical outcomes and sustaining clinics over time. Data were collected prospectively in four senior housing communities which included approximately 375 residents 60 years of age and older. Over the 12-month implementation period, 228 residents were seen, 61 % of all residents. We gave 131 immunizations, checked 576 blood pressures, completed 92 foot care treatments, 69 hearing evaluat…

Addressing housing insecurity contributes to health care programs as stable housing has positive health benefits. Home environmental hazards may reduce these potential health benefits and could increase morbidity for conditions such as asthma. This study examined housing and indoor air quality among urban low-income households in Colorado to inform housing-insecurity interventions. We conducted a community-engaged study among residents of motels, mobile homes, apartments, and single-family homes that included a survey on the home environment, health, and sociodemographic factors, spirometry, a…

Cancer is a leading cause of death in older unhoused adults. We assessed whether being unhoused, gaining housing, or losing housing in the year after cancer diagnosis is associated with poorer survival compared with being continuously housed. We examined all-cause survival in more than 100,000 veterans diagnosed with lung, colorectal, and breast cancer during the period 2011-20. Five percent were unhoused at the time of diagnosis, of whom 21 percent gained housing over the next year; 1 percent of veterans housed at the time of diagnosis lost housing. Continuously unhoused veterans and veterans…

Homelessness in psychiatric patients in Flanders, Belgium, has never been investigated. Advocacy groups from patients with lived experience of psychiatric disorders have sounded the alarm on the scarcity of suitable housing options, the strain on psychiatric institutions, and the challenges faced by social service workers. To investigate the extent of the problem a survey on the topic was initiated. A "homelessness-in-mental-health-questionnaire" was designed by experts in the field. The social services of all Flemish psychiatric hospitals and all psychiatric wards in general hospitals were co…

OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between air pollution exposure and housing context during pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes.
METHODS: We linked air pollution data from the Environmental Protection Agency and housing data from the American Community Survey with birth records from Wisconsin counties over a 9-year period. We calculated average daily pregnancy exposure to fine particulate matter and ozone and modeled its relationship to preterm birth, low birthweight and NICU admission, adjusting for individual characteristics and housing context.
RESULTS: Ozone exposure and housing cos…

Trichinella is a zoonotic parasite, which historically has been of large concern for public health in Europe. Consequently, testing of all pigs for Trichinella has been mandatory in many European countries, even though Trichinella is almost exclusively found in outdoor or backyard production. The idea therefore emerged that auditing for biosecurity should replace testing in indoor production. In the European Union (EU), pigs raised under so-called controlled housing conditions are exempt from testing. The specific requirements for a pig production to be considered a controlled housing holding …

In 2005, the city and state of New York launched New York/New York III (NY/NY III), a permanent supportive housing program for individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness with complex medical and behavioral health issues. This review paper summarizes a decade of findings (2007-2017) from the NY/NY III evaluation team, to analyze this program's impact on various housing and health outcomes. The evaluation team linked NY/NY III eligible persons with administrative data from two years pre- and two years post-eligibility and compared housing and health outcomes between placed …

In April 2020, the Department of Veterans Affairs responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and escalating unsheltered homelessness in Los Angeles by sanctioning a tent turned tiny shelter encampment at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs medical center. Initially, staff offered linkages to on-campus VA healthcare. However, as many Veterans living in the encampment struggled to avail themselves of these services, our "encampment medicine" team was launched to provide on-site care coordination and healthcare at the tiny shelters. This case study showcases the team's engagement with a Veteran experie

Housing instability is considered a significant life stressor and preemptive screening should be applied to identify those at risk for homelessness as early as possible so that they can be targeted for specialized care. We developed models to classify patient outcomes for an established VA Homelessness Screening Clinical Reminder (HSCR), which identifies housing instability, in the two months prior to its administration. Logistic Regression and Random Forest models were fit to classify responses using the last 18 months of document activity. We measure concentration of risk across stratificati…
