Restricted Partition Function Semiclassical Transition State Theory (RPF-SCTST): Applications to Reactions Involving Hydrogen Cyanide, Hydrogen Peroxide, and Formaldehyde Oxide.

We demonstrate the efficiency of the numerical calculation of thermal semiclassical transition state theory (SCTST) rates across several representative chemical reactions using the restricted partition function (RPF)─viz a function that depends only on the imaginary action associated with a reaction. Here, we treat the potential energy surfaces (PESs) through fourth order expansions around the saddle point and integrate the Hamiltonian up to second order in employing vibrational perturbation theory. We apply this formalism to uni- and bimolecular reactions with different─though relatively high

Development of an online hydrogen fuel quality analyzer with gas chromatography-pulsed discharge helium ionization detector for applying hydrogen infrastructures.

Hydrogen fuel, which is essential for the hydrogen economy, including hydrogen cell vehicles, must be of high quality for optimal hydrogen cell use. Currently, hydrogen fuel quality control is mainly done by offline analysis with periodic sampling. However, with the anticipated surge in hydrogen charging stations, there's a pressing need for cost-effective, high-throughput online analysis systems. Additionally, the miniaturization of these analytical instruments for field application is also a challenge. In this study, we present a compact, real-time hydrogen fuel analyzer based on gas chromat…

Microbial hydrogen consumption leads to a significant pH increase under high-saline-conditions: implications for hydrogen storage in salt caverns.

Salt caverns have been successfully used for natural gas storage globally since the 1940s and are now under consideration for hydrogen (H2) storage, which is needed in large quantities to decarbonize the economy to finally reach a net zero by 2050. Salt caverns are not sterile and H2 is a ubiquitous electron donor for microorganisms. This could entail that the injected H2 will be microbially consumed, leading to a volumetric loss and potential production of toxic H2S. However, the extent and rates of this microbial H2 consumption under high-saline cavern conditions are not yet understood. To i…

Ligand-Controlled Ruthenium-Catalyzed Borrowing-Hydrogen and Interrupted-Borrowing-Hydrogen Methodologies: Functionalization of Ketones Using Methanol as a C1 Source.

Herein we report simple, highly efficient, and phosphine-free N,C-Ru and N,N-Ru catalysts for ligand-controlled borrowing-hydrogen (BH) and interrupted-borrowing-hydrogen (I-BH) methods, respectively. This protocol has been employed on a variety of ketones using MeOH as a green, sustainable, and alternative C1 source to form a C-C bond through the BH and I-BH methods. Reasonably good substrate scope, functional group tolerance, and good-to-excellent yields at 70 °C are the added highlights of these methodologies. Controlled experiments reveal that an in situ formed formaldehyde is one of the c…

Isotopic-Perturbation NMR Study of Hydrogen-Bond Symmetry in Solution: Temperature Dependence and Comparison of OHO and ODO Hydrogen Bonds.

Is a hydrogen bond symmetric, with the hydrogen centered between two donor atoms, or is it asymmetric, with the hydrogen closer to one but jumping to the other? The NMR method of isotopic perturbation has been used to distinguish these. Previous evidence from isotope shifts implies that a wide variety of dicarboxylate monanions are asymmetric, present as a rapidly equilibrating mixture of tautomers. However, calculations of hydrogen trajectories across an anharmonic potential-energy surface could reproduce the observed isotope shifts in a phthalate monoanion. Therefore, it was concluded that t…

Hydrogen Sulfide Increases Production of NADPH Oxidase-Dependent Hydrogen Peroxide and Phospholipase D-Derived Phosphatidic Acid in Guard Cell Signaling.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important gaseous signaling molecule in plants that participates in stress responses and development. l-Cys desulfhydrase 1, one of the enzymatic sources of H2S in plants, participates in abscisic acid-induced stomatal closure. We combined pharmacological and genetic approaches to elucidate the involvement of H2S in stomatal closure and the interplay between H2S and other second messengers of the guard cell signaling network, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and phospholipase D (PLD)-derived phosphatidic acid in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Both NADPH oxidas…

Direct hydrogenation of natural oils to fatty alcohols enabled by an alcoholysis/hydrogenation relay strategy and two-phase solvent system.

Direct hydrogenation of natural oils to fatty alcohols was achieved via a relay strategy involving alcoholysis of natural oils followed by hydrogenation of fatty acid esters. A two-phase system was used to avoid catalyst poisoning by glycerol. This protocol is suitable for plant oils, animal fats and waste cooking oil.

Boosting Chemoselective Hydrogenation of Nitroaromatic via Synergy of Hydrogen Spillover and Preferential Adsorption on Magnetically Recoverable Pt@Fe2 O3.

It is highly desired but challenging to design high performance catalyst for selective hydrogenation of nitro compounds into amino compounds. Herein, a boosting chemoselective hydrogenation strategy on Pt@Fe2 O3 is proposed with gradient oxygen vacancy by synergy of hydrogen spillover and preferential adsorption. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the nitro is preferentially adsorbed onto oxygen vacancy of Pt@Fe2 O3 , meanwhile, the H2 dissociated on Pt nanoparticles and then spillover to approach the nitro for selective hydrogenation (>99% conversion of 4-nitrostyrene, > …

Pharmacokinetics of hydrogen administered intraperitoneally as hydrogen-rich saline and its effect on ischemic neuronal cell death in the brain in gerbils.

Intraperitoneal administration of hydrogen (H2)-containing saline inhibited neuronal cell death in ischemic stroke in a number of animal models, but it is unknown whether H2 is absorbed from the abdominal cavity into the blood and reaches the brain. In this study, we investigated whether intraperitoneal administration of saline containing H2 inhibits neuronal cell death caused by cerebral ischemia and measured the concentration of H2 in the carotid artery and inferior vena cava (IVC). Gerbils were subjected to transient unilateral cerebral ischemia twice, and saline or H2-rich saline was admin…

A tracer-type fluorescent probe for imaging adenosine triphosphate under the stresses of hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen peroxide in living cells.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a direct energy source in cells and the core of the biochemical system, and is closely related to various metabolic activities in living organisms. Therefore, designing a simple and rapid ATP detection method is significant to study its physiological function. Herein, a dual-channel fluorescent probe RhB-NA for the in situ imaging of ATP in living cells was designed and synthesized. When ATP bound to RhB-NA, the spirolactam in rhodamine B was induced to open, resulting in a new fluorescence response at 589 nm. Notably, in cell imaging, the treatment of HeLa cell

Ozone and hydrogen peroxide as strategies to control biomass in a trickling filter to treat methanol and hydrogen sulfide under acidic conditions.

The operation and performance of a biotrickling filter for methanol (MeOH) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal at acid pH was studied. Excess biomass in the filter bed, causing performance loss and high pressure drop, was controlled by intermittent addition, of ozone (O3) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The results showed that after adaptation to acid pH, the maximum elimination capacity (EC) reached for MeOH was 565 g m-3 h -1 (97 % RE). High MeOH loads resulted in increased biomass concentration within the support, triggering reductions in the removal efficiency (RE) for both compounds close to…

[Assessment of exposure to hydrogen cyanide in fire fatalities in the aspects of endogenous hydrogen cyanide production as a result of putrefaction processes in the deceased].

On account of endogenous hydrogen cyanide (HCN) production in the deceased, it is not easy to assess exposure to HCN in people who died in fire involving closed rooms (flats, garages, cellars, etc). In the paper, the authors present the results of blood determinations of hydrogen cyanide in fatalities of explosions and fires occurring in coal-mines, as well as fires in closed rooms. It has been demonstrated that the time of exposure to a high temperature and the temperature itself hamper autolysis processes that lead to production of endogenous HCN in fire fatalities.

Hydrogen isotopes reveal water leakage from the core.

Chemical heterogeneities in Earth's deep mantle may record either preserved primordial reservoirs or later core-mantle exchange, but distinguishing between these origins remains challenging. Hydrogen isotopes offer a sensitive tracer, yet whether magma ocean crystallization could generate a deuterium-depleted deep reservoir has not been quantitatively evaluated. Here, we use machine learning-accelerated path-integral simulations to determine equilibrium hydrogen isotope fractionation between silicate melt and bridgmanite, ringwoodite, and wadsleyite under magma ocean conditions. Incorporating …

Bioinspired Hydrogen-Bond Traps Enabling Ultrasensitive Temperature Sensing.

The development of flexible temperature sensors is hindered by the intrinsically low thermal sensitivity of soft ionic conductors, which arises from averaged energy landscapes and competing transport mechanisms. Inspired by the gating mechanism of biological transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels, we propose a hydrogen-bond trap regulation strategy. By constructing localized hydrogen-bond traps with heterogeneous energy distributions within a deep eutectic solvent (DES) gel network, continuous ion transport is transformed into a confined, thermally activated hopping process. This appr…

Bromide-mediated paired electrosynthesis of hydrogen and epoxide.

Water electrolysis struggles to compete with the low cost of hydrogen produced from methane or coal. We propose a bromide-mediated paired electrosynthesis system in which an aqueous electrolyte is combined with olefins in an inert organic co-solvent to simultaneously generate hydrogen and epoxides. In this process, bromide electrolysis first produces gaseous hydrogen and solution-confined bromine; the bromine is then used to partially oxidize olefins into high-value epoxides while being regenerated back to bromide. By replacing low-value oxygen with valuable epoxides, this approach increases t…

Iron ion enables photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from methanol.

Global demand for hydrogen gas is expected to increase as efforts toward carbon neutrality intensify. Hydrogen emits no carbon dioxide during use and is regarded as a promising clean energy carrier, with technologies such as fuel cells being actively developed. However, most hydrogen is currently produced from fossil resources such as natural gas and oil, creating an urgent need for sustainable production methods. Although hydrogen can be produced from water or renewable feedstocks including alcohols, sewage sludge, and waste plastics, the high cost of these technologies remains a major barrie…

Reusable NiCo/Cu Catalysts for Sustainable Hydrogen Generation.

The generation of high-purity hydrogen via chemical reaction from hydrogen-rich materials is one of the ways in the alternative energy industry. In this approach, the utilization of catalytic materials that possess the capacity to initiate the decomposition of the starting material and the subsequent release of hydrogen is of paramount importance. In this study, nickel/cobalt-plated copper catalysts (NiCo/Cu) are presented, comprising from 4 to 90 wt.% of cobalt as catalytic materials for hydrogen generation via sodium borohydride (NaBH4) hydrolysis reaction. The NiCo/Cu catalysts were synthes…
