Assessment of infection efficiency and symptom severity of rhizogenic Agrobacterium strains.

Hairy Root Disease (HRD) is a significant threat to hydroponic crops such as tomato, cucumber, melon, eggplant, and bell pepper. Rhizogenic agrobacteria are the primary causative agents of HRD and infection of host plants results in excessive root growth, which leads to substantial yield losses. This study investigated infection efficiency and symptom severity across 24 rhizogenic Agrobacterium strains and explored potential correlations with specific genomospecies, opine types or host of isolation. This was done using a laboratory-scale assay, i.e. an in vitro carrot disk bioassay, and a soil

Subcellular Potassium Ion-Mediated Structural Coordination Between Mesophyll Cells and Chloroplasts Determines CO2 Mesophyll Conductance.

Potassium (K) homeostasis critically orchestrates photosynthetic performance through mesophyll conductance (gm) regulation-a key bottleneck limiting CO2 assimilation under K deficiency. While K deprivation reduces gm via anatomical alterations, the mechanistic interplay between subcellular K+ distribution and chloroplast-level structural determinants remains elusive. Field experiments using two Brassica napus L. cultivars with contrasting K utilization efficiencies (KUtE) were employed to resolve how subcellular K+ dynamics regulate gm through hierarchical structural modifications. Under mild

Uptake, translocation, and phytotoxic mechanisms of polystyrene and polylactic acid nanoplastics in tobacco seedlings.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are increasingly recognized as pollutants in agricultural systems, yet their impacts on tobacco remain poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the uptake, translocation, and physiological responses of tobacco seedlings exposed to polystyrene (PS, 50 nm) and polylactic acid (PLA, 50 nm) NPs under hydroponic conditions. Both PS and PLA exhibited concentration-dependent effects. Low concentrations (10 mg L-1) moderately enhanced biomass accumulation (8.2-24.4%) and photosynthetic performance (21.6-33.5%), whereas high concentrations (100 mg L-1) significantly

Co-Application of Silicon with Selenium, Sulphur, Zinc, and Iron in Plants: Mechanisms of Stress Tolerance, Nutrient Homeostasis and Secondary Metabolism.

While individual Si-nutrient interactions have been reviewed separately, a comparative analysis of multiple Si-element interactions remains lacking. This review compares current knowledge on co-application of Si with selenium (Se), sulphur (S), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe), focusing on stress tolerance, nutrient homeostasis, physiological responses, secondary metabolism and agronomic relevance. The evidence indicates that combining Si with these elements helps maintain reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis, strengthen antioxidant defenses, stabilize photosynthetic function and improve nutrient

The inoculation with Pseudomonas simiae WCS417 strain promotes growth and the induction of iron-deficiency responses in cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.).

Inoculation with Pseudomonas simiae WCS417 improves cucumber growth under Fe deficiency conditions and induces iron-deficiency responses, making it a promising candidate for sustainable biofertilization strategies in dicot plants. Iron (Fe) deficiency poses a significant agronomic challenge in calcareous soils, particularly affecting dicot plants. Conventional production methods rely heavily on high-yielding varieties and the application of substantial amounts of agrochemicals, leading to considerable environmental concerns. In this context, leveraging the potential of beneficial rhizosphere m

Helium governs nitric oxide signaling to improve alfalfa salinity tolerance by reestablishing redox and ion homeostasis.

Helium, previously described as "biologically inert", displays great medicinal potential in a number of respiratory ailments via influencing redox signaling. However, whether or how this gas functions in plant biology is still elusive. Here, hydroponic and pot experiments showed that mimicking the responses achieved by nitric oxide (NO)-releasing compound, exogenous helium supply with helium-enriched solution or its fumigation significantly prevented NaCl-induced growth inhibition of alfalfa seedlings. Lower level of Na+/K+ ratio in both root and shoot parts caused by lower efflux of net K+ an

Exogenous Fe(II) enhanced iron plaque formation influences the adsorption and immobilization of Cd in rice root.

BACKGROUND: Iron plaque on the rice rhizoplane could potentially prevent cadmium (Cd) entry into plant roots. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to study the morphological characteristics and mineral compositions of iron plaque, Cd immobilization mechanism by iron plaque, and its effect on Cd uptake and transport in rice. RESULTS: Exogenous divalent iron ion (Fe(II)) could induce the formation of deep-red iron plaque on rice rhizoplane, which primarily consisted of ferrihydrite, goethite, hematite, iron phosphate, and iron sulfate compounds. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

The magnesium-specific uptake and translocation transporters ZmMGT10 and MGR6 are upregulated not only by magnesium deficiency but also by high potassium concentrations in maize.

The antagonism between potassium (K+) and magnesium (Mg2+) is the primary cause of Mg2+ deficiency worldwide. Recent studies have demonstrated that the suppressive effect of K+ on Mg2+ uptake is significantly reduced as the K+/Mg2+ ratio increases, as both cations share non-specific cation channels. Concomitantly, the relative root/shoot translocation of Mg2+ increased. In contrast, there are indications that elevated tissue [K+] impedes the primary physiological functions of Mg2+. In this study on Zea mays L., the involvement of the only known specific Mg2+ uptake transporter ZmMGT10 and that

Genome-wide association study reveals effect of nsSNPs on candidate genes in rice during iron deficiency.

Resource-poor areas with moisture deficit lands following aerobic and direct seeded rice (DSR) methods of cultivation face severe problems of iron deficiency. In this study, Bengal and Assam Aus rice panel was phenotyped at the seedling stage using an iron-deprived hydroponic medium for various shoot and root traits. A novel iron deficiency scoring scale was used to classify the tolerance reaction and could range anywhere between 0 and 9, indicating the most tolerant and susceptible, respectively. The GWAS results identified four putative candidate genes; OsFLA for number of leaves and shoot l

PEG treatment is unsuitable to study root related traits as it alters root anatomy in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.).

BACKGROUND: The frequency and severity of abiotic stress events, especially drought, are increasing due to climate change. The plant root is the most important organ for water uptake and the first to be affected by water limitation. It is therefore becoming increasingly important to include root traits in studies on drought stress tolerance. However, phenotyping under field conditions remains a challenging task. In this study, plants were grown in a hydroponic system with polyethylene glycol as an osmotic stressor and in sand pots to examine the root system of eleven spring barley genotypes. T

Synergistic effects of silicon and goethite co-application in alleviating cadmium stress in rice (Oryza sativa L.): Insights into plant growth and iron plaque formation mechanisms.

Rice is one of the most important staple food crops; however, it is prone to cadmium (Cd) accumulation, which has negative health effects. Therefore, methods to reduce Cd uptake by rice are necessary. At present, there is limited research on the effects of co-application of silicon (Si) and goethite in mitigating Cd stress in rice. Furthermore, the specific mechanisms underlying the effects of their combined application on iron plaque formation in rice roots remain unclear. Therefore, this study analyzed the effects of the combined application of Si and goethite on the biomass, physiological s

Exploring the Role of Debaryomyces hansenii as Biofertilizer in Iron-Deficient Environments to Enhance Plant Nutrition and Crop Production Sustainability.

The European "Green Deal" policies are shifting toward more sustainable and environmentally conscious agricultural practices, reducing the use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides. This implies exploring alternative strategies. One promising alternative to improve plant nutrition and reinforce plant defenses is the use of beneficial microorganisms in the rhizosphere, such as "Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria and fungi". Despite the great abundance of iron (Fe) in the Earth's crust, its poor solubility in calcareous soil makes Fe deficiency a major agricultural issue worldwide. Among plant

Elevated CO2 enhances growth and cyanide assimilation in nitrogen-deficient rice: A transcriptome and metabolomic perspective.

Plants face multiple challenges from environmental pollutants and higher emissions of atmospheric CO2. Therefore, a hydroponic-based experiment was used to explore the combined effects of elevated [CO2] (700 ppm) and exogenous cyanide (CN-) (3.0 mg CN/L) on rice seedlings under nitrogen deficiency, utilizing metabonomic and transcriptomic analysis. Elevated [CO2] significantly improved the growth of CN--treated rice seedlings compared to those with ambient [CO2] (350 ppm), and it also significantly affected CN- assimilation. Transcriptome analysis revealed distinct impacts on differentially ex

Influence of exposure time, physicochemical properties, and plant transpiration on the uptake dynamics and translocation of pharmaceutical and personal care products in the aquatic macrophyte Typha latifolia.

Typha latifolia is widely used as a phytoremediation model plant for organic compounds. However, the dynamic uptake and translocation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and their relationship with physicochemical properties, such as lipophilicity (LogKow), ionization behavior (pKa), pH-dependent lipophilicity (LogDow), exposure time and transpiration, are scarcely studied. In the current study, hydroponically grown T. latifolia was exposed to carbamazepine, fluoxetine, gemfibrozil, and triclosan at environmentally relevant concentrations (20 μg/L each). Eighteen out of thirty

The sensitivity of photosynthesis to magnesium deficiency differs between rice (Oryza sativa L.) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

Magnesium is an essential macronutrient for plant photosynthesis, and in response to Mg deficiency, dicots appear more sensitive than monocots. Under Mg deficiency, we investigated the causes of differing photosynthetic sensitivities in a dicot and a monocot species. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) were grown in hydroponic culture to explore their physiological responses to Mg deficiency stress. Both Mg-deficient rice and cucumber plants exhibited lower biomass, leaf area, Mg concentration, and chlorophyll content (Chl) compared with Mg-sufficient plants. However, a mo

Accumulation, transportation, and distribution of tetracycline and cadmium in rice.

Co-exposure to heavy metal and antibiotic pollution might result in complexation and synergistic interactions, affecting rice growth and further exacerbating pollutant enrichment. Therefore, our study sought to clarify the influence of different Tetracycline (TC) and Cadmium(Cd) concentration ratios (both alone and combined) on rice growth, pollutant accumulation, and transportation during the tillering stage in hydroponic system. Surprisingly, our findings indicated that the interaction between TC and Cd could alleviate the toxic effects of TC/Cd on aerial rice structures and decrease polluta

Spatial-temporal variations of proline and related amino acids reveal distinct nitrogenous utilization strategies in rice during detoxification of exogenous cyanide.

Cyanide (CN-) pollution in agricultural systems impairs amino acid metabolism in rice plants, hence decreasing their quality and yield. Meanwhile, little is known about the effects of CN- assimilation on the innate pool of proline (Pro) and its synthesis-related amino acids (Pro-AAs) in rice plants. In this study, a hydroponic experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of exogenous KCN on indigenous levels of Pro-AAs, i.e., Pro, glutamate (Glu), arginine (Arg), and ornithine (Orn) in rice seedlings fertilized with either nitrate (NO3-) or ammonium (NH4+) through the biochemical and R

Several Yeast Species Induce Iron Deficiency Responses in Cucumber Plants (Cucumis sativus L.).

Iron (Fe) deficiency is a first-order agronomic problem that causes a significant decrease in crop yield and quality. Paradoxically, Fe is very abundant in most soils, mainly in its oxidized form, but is poorly soluble and with low availability for plants. In order to alleviate this situation, plants develop different morphological and physiological Fe-deficiency responses, mainly in their roots, to facilitate Fe mobilization and acquisition. Even so, Fe fertilizers, mainly Fe chelates, are widely used in modern agriculture, causing environmental problems and increasing the costs of production

Cluster roots of Embothrium coccineum modify their metabolism and show differential gene expression in response to phosphorus supply.

Embothrium coccineum produces cluster roots (CR) to acquire sparingly soluble phosphorus (P) from the soil through the exudation of organic compounds. However, the physiological mechanisms involved in carbon drainage through its roots, as well as the gene expression involved in the biosynthesis of carboxylates and P uptake, have not been explored. In this work, we evaluated the relationship between carboxylate exudation rate and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) activity in roots of E. coccineum seedlings grown in a nutrient-poor volcanic substrate. Second, we evaluated CR formation and t
