Revision of the world Monoctonia Starý, parasitoids of gall aphids: taxonomy, distribution, host range, and phylogeny (Hymenoptera, Braconidae: Aphidiinae).

The present paper represents a contribution to the knowledge of the taxonomy of Monoctonia Starý aphid parasitoids obtained using the barcoding region of the mitochondrial COI gene. We discuss the phylogenetic position of the genus within the subtribe Monoctonina, redescribe known species, and describe Monoctonia japonica sp. n. from Japan in the association Pemphigus matsumurai Monzen/Populus maximowiczii. A key for species identification is provided. Also, we review and discuss the host records, origin, and geographical distribution of Monoctonia species. It is hypothesized that the genus Mo

Individual hymenoptera venom compounds induce upregulation of the basophil activation marker ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 3 (CD203c) in sensitized patients.

BACKGROUND: Bee and wasp venom extracts contain potent allergens capable of inducing severe clinical reactions. To analyze immediate-type hypersensitivity to defined hymenoptera venom components, a recently developed in vitro test was applied that is based on the upregulation of CD203c expression on basophils. METHODS: CD203c expression on blood basophils of 9 healthy donors and 39 patients allergic to bee and/or wasp venom was analyzed by flow cytometry before and after activation with the purified bee venom allergens phospholipase A2 (Api m 1), hyaluronidase (Api m 2) and melittin (Api m 4)…

Florida red scale Chrysomphalus aonidum (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) and parasitoid Aphytis melinus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) colonization of Citrus Under Protective Screen.

The Citrus Under Protective Screen is a novel production system implemented to grow citrus free of huanglongbing disease vectored by Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri. Other significant pests such as mites, scales, thrips, mealybugs, and leafminers, as well as parasitoids and small predators, have been identified from Citrus Under Protective Screen and require management. Chrysomphalus aonidum (L.), an armored scale is a major pest of citrus. We determined the incidence of C. aonidum and parasitoid Aphytis melinus in 4-quarter-acre Citrus Under Protective Screen structures and open-air co

Honeydew production by the giant willow aphid (Tuberolachnus salignus, Hemiptera: Aphididae) and its effect on foraging yellowjackets (Hymenoptera: Vespidae).

BACKGROUND: Understanding the factors that promote the success of invasive species is important for managing biological invasions. Interactions between invasives and other species (e.g. competitors, pathogens, or predators), could favor or limit their success. In recent decades, yellowjacket wasps, including Vespula germanica and Vespula vulgaris, have successfully established in Patagonia. Additionally, the invasive willow Salix fragilis has invaded areas next to watercourses, which in turn are typically colonized by the giant willow aphid (GWA, Tuberolagnus salignus), an additional species c

Fatal hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis by undetected clonal mast cell disorder: A better identification of high risk patients is needed.

Hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis is the most frequent cause of anaphylaxis and responsible for about 20% of all fatal anaphylaxis cases in adults. We report two cases of fatal hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis with undiagnosed underlying mastocytosis and review the risk factors for severe or fatal hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis, as well as the specificities of its association with mastocytosis. As hymenoptera venom allergic patients with underlying clonal mast cell disorder generally lack typical skin lesions of mastocytosis, its diagnosis can easily be missed, underscoring the importance and need for…

Diagnostic precision of component-resolved vs. extract-based in vitro diagnosis of hymenoptera venom allergy: effects on clinical management.

BACKGROUND: The measurement of specific IgE (sIgE) antibodies plays a key role in the diagnosis of honeybee and wasp venom allergy. In recent years, component-resolved diagnosis (CRD) has been introduced, which allows for the measurement of sIgE antibodies against Api m 1, Ves v 1, Ves v 5, and Pol d 5, as well as cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCDs). These tests are intended to help determine the clinical relevance of any given sensitization, especially in patients with dual sensitization. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Specific IgE antibody levels were measured in 143 patients with bee an

Effects of Two Conventional Insecticides on Male-Specific Sex Pheromone Discrimination and Mate Choice in Trichogramma chilonis (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae).

Trichogramma chilonis Ishii is an important natural enemy of many lepidopterous pests on vegetables and field crops. The effects of two conventional insecticides on male-specific sex pheromone discrimination and mate choice in T. chilonis was evaluated in the laboratory. Beta-cypermethrin LC20 exposure induced decreases in male conspecific sex pheromone discrimination and mating rate in T. chilonis, and these decreases were not due to the lower locomotor activity of the surviving T. chilonis males. Spinosad LC20 exposure caused a significant decrease in male locomotor activity of T. chilonis,

The parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), influences food consumption and utilization by larval Diatraea saccharalis (F.) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae).

Parasitoids exploit host insects for food and other resources; they alter host development and physiology to optimize conditions to favor parasitoid development. Parasitoids influence their hosts by injecting eggs, along with a variety of substances, including venoms, polydnaviruses, ovarian fluids, and other maternal factors, into hosts. These factors induce profound changes in hosts, such as behavior, metabolism, endocrine events, and immune defense. Because endoparasitoids develop and consume tissues from within their hosts, it is reasonable to suggest that internal parasitization would als

Photosynthesis and yield reductions from wheat stem sawfly (Hymenoptera: Cephidae): interactions with wheat solidness, water stress, and phosphorus deficiency.

The impact of herbivory on plants is variable and influenced by several factors. The current study examined causes of variation in the impact of larval stem mining by the wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae), on spring wheat, Triticum aestivum L. We performed greenhouse experiments over 2 yr to (1) study whether biotic (hollow versus solid stemmed host wheat) and abiotic (water, phosphorus stress) factors interact with C. cinctus stem mining to influence degree of mined stem physiological (photosynthesis) and yield (grain weight) reductions; and (2) determine whethe…

The role of ants, especially the fire ant, Solenopsis geminata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), in the biological control of tropical upland rice pests.

Predatory ants are omnipresent year-round in upland (dryland) rice fields in the Philippines. At least 14 species were identified of which the very aggressive Solenopsis geminata (Fabricius) and also Tapinoma sp. nr indicum Forel usually predominated. Some highly aggressive species, notably Pheidolegetonspp. and Bothriomyrmex dalyi Forel were localized. Solenopsis geminata flourished within many fields, not only during the crop season but also throughout dry season fallows where they remained aggressively predatory. Rice plants infested with brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) were usu

Commercial Product Based on Metarhizium Anisopliae Affects Survival, Midgut Morphology, and Behavior in the Stingless Bee Scaptotrigona depilis (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Brazilian social stingless bees are important pollinators and producers of honey, wax, royal jelly, propolis, and other products. These species are experiencing a population decline, attributed to different factors, such as the excessive use of pesticides. Biological control has been proposed as an alternative to chemical control, relying on the use of natural enemies to manage pests, including microorganisms such as entomopathogenic fungi. However, little is known about the effects of these agents on stingless bees. Therefore, this research evaluated the effect of the commercial bioproduct Me
