The mechanisms responsible for the increase in minimal coronary vascular resistance per unit mass of myocardium in animals with chronic hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy remain unidentified. Because increases in wall thickness of resistance vessels in some vascular beds in response to hypertension may decrease luminal diameter, we hypothesized that similar changes may occur in the coronary vasculature. To test this hypothesis, we performed hemodynamic and morphometric studies on eight dogs with renovascular hypertension (one kidney, one clip) of 6 weeks' duration, and in six normot

INTRODUCTION: X-linked Hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a genetic condition of renal phosphate wasting with multisystem complications. Children and adults with XLH have increased frequency of obesity, a risk factor for hypertension. We evaluated hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy in children with XLH, and their relationship with XLH treatment (phosphate/active vitamin D vs burosumab).
METHODS: Blood pressure and hypertension were combined and analyzed from four datasets: prospective data from the 301 burosumab vs conventional therapy randomized active-controlled trial (301 RCT, NCT0291570

Background: Exercise-induced left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) has been extensively investigated in adolescent athletes using the conventional two-tiered classification (2TC). However, the four-tiered classification (4TC) allows further differentiation of LVH patterns by incorporating three-dimensional information on left ventricular (LV) geometry. This study aimed to compare LVH assessment using the two classification systems and characterize the reclassification patterns. Methods: A total of 121 adolescent athletes (mean age: 15.1 ± 1.6 years) and 114 adult athletes (mean age: 22.9 ± 3.7 ye

Essential hypertension (EH) and hypertrophic non-obstructive cardiomyopathy (HNCM) are representative conditions associated with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). We compared the severity and distribution of LVH between these two conditions. This study included 44 patients with EH and 79 with HNCM exhibiting precordial negative T-waves (NTs) without LV heart failure. Electrocardiographic assessments included measurements of SV1 + RV5 and the maximum depth of NTs, and routine echocardiographic indices were measured. The SV1 + RV5 and maximum depth of NTs were greater in HNCM than in EH. BACKGROUND: Mavacamten has revolutionised the treatment of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) but requires frequent follow-up. Routine ECG may offer an accessible tool to indicate response to therapy. This study evaluates ECG-based indices of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in patients with HOCM receiving mavacamten therapy.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, after screening of 62 consecutive patients with HOCM treated at a German tertiary referral centre from August 2023 to February 2025, 31 patients (42% female, mean age 61±12 years) were included. During the first 12 week

BACKGROUND: Myocardial bridging (MB) was considered a congenital anomaly and was found with increased frequency in coronary computed tomography angiography. Some case studies reported an association of MB with various cardiomyopathies. However, the association between MB severity and left ventricular hypertrophy remains unclear.
AIMS: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate whether myocardial bridge is related to left ventricular hypertrophy in patients referred for coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA).
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 227 patients (age 53.2 [11.1

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy is a common clinical finding. Differential diagnosis includes Fabry disease, a rare and progressive, but treatable storage disease caused by deficiency of α-galactosidase A. However, diagnosis of Fabry is often hampered by its clinical heterogeneity, LV hypertrophy phenocopies and unawareness of the clinician.
METHODS: This review summarises clinical data, family history, electrocardiogram (ECG) and imaging (echocardiogram and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR)) characteristics to differentiate aetiologies of LV hypertrophy including clues fo

The goal of this paper is to elucidate the effects of sodium restriction on hypertension and left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy in a mouse model with primary aldosteronism (PA). Mice with genetic deletion of TWIK-related acid-sensitive K (TASK)-1 and TASK-3 channels (TASK-/-) were used as the animal model of PA. Parameters of the LV were assessed using echocardiography and histomorphology analysis. Untargeted metabolomics analysis was conducted to reveal the mechanisms underlying the hypertrophic changes in the TASK-/- mice. The TASK-/- adult male mice exhibited the hallmarks of PA, including h

BACKGROUND: Hypertension adds to the pressure overload on the left ventricle (LV) in combination with aortic valve (AV) disease, but the optimal blood pressure (BP) targets for patients with AV disease remain unclear. We tried to investigate whether intensive BP control reduces LV hypertrophy in asymptomatic patients with aortic stenosis (AS) or aortic regurgitation (AR).
METHODS: A total of 128 hypertensive patients with mild to moderate AS (n = 93) or AR (n = 35) were randomly assigned to intensive therapy, targeting a systolic BP <130 mm Hg, or standard therapy, targeting a systolic BP <14

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy (LVH) in patients with hypertension is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. However, the prognostic implication of LVH regression after antihypertensive therapy has not been clearly investigated.
METHODS: Patients who underwent echocardiography at the time of the diagnosis of hypertension and repeated echocardiography at an interval of 6-18 months were retrospectively identified. LVH was defined as LV mass index (LVMI) >115 g/m2 (men) and >95 g/m2 (women). LVH regression was defined as LVH at initial echocardiograp

Background Various ECG criteria for left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) have been proposed, but their association with clinical outcomes in patients with severe aortic stenosis undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement is unknown. We investigated the prevalence of ECG LVH according to different criteria and its prognostic impact on clinical outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Methods and Results In this prospective observational cohort, we evaluated 700 patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement between March 2010 and December 2019. Baseline preproc

OBJECTIVE: Affective temperaments (depressive, anxious, irritable, hyperthymic, and cyclothymic) are regarded as the stable core of personality and when present in their dominant form, are considered subclinical manifestations and high-risk states for various affective disorders. Furthermore, cumulating evidence supports their relationship with cardiovascular diseases. Our aim was to assess the association between affective temperaments and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in chronic hypertensive patients.
METHODS: In the present cross-sectional study, 296 patients referred to coronary comp

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) patients. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an early and severe complication in ADPKD patients. Two decades ago, the prevalence of LVH on echocardiography in hypertensive ADPKD patients was shown to be as high as 46%. Recent studies using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging have shown that the prevalence of LVH in ADPKD patients may be lower. The true prevalence of LVH in ADPKD patients is controversial. There is evidence that factors other than hypertension contribute to LVH in ADPKD

BACKGROUND: The changes in electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy (ECG-LVH) after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) are not fully elucidated.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The study group included 64 patients who underwent TAVI for aortic stenosis. Their 12-lead ECGs before and at 2 days and 1, 6 and 12 months after TAVI were analyzed, and ECG-LVH was evaluated using various definitions. Values and prevalence of each ECG-LVH parameter significantly decreased between 1 and 6 months after TAVI. Values of ECG-LVH parameters decreased especially in patients with ECG-LVH at baseline

OBJECTIVES: American-style football (ASF) athletes are at risk for the development of concentric left ventricular hypertrophy (C-LVH), an established cardiovascular risk factor in the general population. We sought to address whether black race is associated with acquired C-LVH in collegiate ASF athletes.
METHODS: Collegiate ASF athletes from two National Collegiate Athletic Association Division-I programmes were recruited as freshmen between 2014 and 2019 and analysed over 3 years. Demographics (neighbourhood family income) and repeated clinical characteristics and echocardiography were recor

INTRODUCTION: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) develop early changes in left ventricular (LV) geometry and experience cardiovascular events in excess than in the general population. This study was designed to assess prevalence, predictors and prognostic role of LV hypertrophy (LVH) in a selected group of RA patients with normal blood pressure and glycemia who should be at low risk for LVH.
METHODS: We prospectively analyzed 241 normotensive normoglycemic RA patients (mean age 53 ± 12 years, 61% women) involved in a primary prevention program for cardiovascular diseases who were followe

AIMS: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrinopathy that is suggested to increase the risk for cardiovascular disease. How PCOS may lead to adverse cardiac outcomes is unclear and here we hypothesized that prenatal exposure to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and/or maternal obesity in mice induce adverse metabolic and cardiac programming in female offspring that resemble the reproductive features of the syndrome.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The maternal obese PCOS phenotype was induced in mice by chronic high-fat-high-sucrose consumption together with prenatal DHT exposure. The prenatally an

This longitudinal study aims to characterize longitudinal blood pressure (BP) trajectories from childhood and examine the impact of level-independent childhood BP trajectories on adult left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and remodeling patterns. The longitudinal cohort consisted of 1154 adults (787 whites and 367 blacks) who had repeated measurements of BP 4 to 15 times from childhood (4-19 years) to adulthood (20-51 years) and assessment of echocardiographic LV dimensions in adulthood. Model-estimated levels and linear slopes of BP at childhood age points were calculated in 1-year intervals us
