"Sky Full of Stars" Pattern: Dermoscopic Findings in a Desmoplastic Giant Congenital Melanocytic Nevus.

Desmoplastic giant congenital melanocytic nevus (DGCN) is an uncommon variant of congenital nevus, presenting as a progressive induration and hypopigmentation of the lesion that occasionally causes hair loss and even total or partial disappearance of the nevus. A 6-month-old girl with a giant congenital melanocytic nevus that involved the entire posterior side of the right thigh was seen in our department. Nine months later, the peripheral area of the nevus presented as a marked induration with hypopigmentation. Dermoscopy demonstrated a reticular pattern exclusively located in the perifollicu…

Genes influencing deposition of melanin in breast muscle of the Xuefeng black bone chicken based on bioinformatic analysis.

The Xuefeng black bone chicken (XFBC) represents an important poultry genetic resource. However, the darkness in breast muscle is heterogeneous. The molecular genetic mechanisms underlying melanogenesis of breast muscle in XFBC remains unclear. This study used RNA-seq to compare the difference in transcriptome between hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation of breast muscle. Six cDNA libraries were constructed for hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation groups in XFBC. We identified 395 differently expressed genes (DEGs) between hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation group (P < 0.05, |log2FC|≥1)…

Inhibitors of intracellular signaling pathways that lead to stimulated epidermal pigmentation: perspective of anti-pigmenting agents.

Few anti-pigmenting agents have been designed and developed according to their known hyperpigmentation mechanisms and corresponding intracel … ts capable of attenuating the natural unstimulated pigmentation process have the risk of leading to hypopigmentation. Since intracellular signaling pathways within melanocytes do not function substantially in maintaining normal skin color and are activated only by environmental stimuli such as UV radiation, specifically down-regulating the activation of melanogene …

Noncultured keratinocyte/melanocyte cosuspension: effect on reepithelialization and repigmentation--a randomized, placebo-controlled study.

Randomized controlled trials in the literature investigating the efficacy of noncultured keratinocyte/melanocyte suspensions are scarce; however, the advocates of such techniques press the value of their application based largely on case studies and anecdote. Caucasian patients with burn hypopigmentation seldom request cosmetic revision making worthwhile clinical trials difficult so that informal case treatments with new therapies generate anecdotal results. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial was carried out to evaluate whether cosuspensions of noncultured skin cells are capable of (1) dec…

Depigmented extramammary Paget's disease.

BACKGROUND: Depigmented extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) has been reported in a few cases. Depigmented macules or patches may be the only … manifested depigmented lesions which were confirmed to be EMPD pathologically. In two patients, the hypopigmentation was associated with erythematous lesions at the initial presentation. In four others, the depigmentation developed later as local recurrence after excision, cryotherapy, photodynamic therapy or radiotherapy. The progressive enlargement of the depigm …

Periocular cutaneous pigmentary changes associated with topical betaxolol.

PURPOSE: We report two cases of periocular cutaneous hypopigmentation and one case of hyperpigmentation which appeared while the patients were on betaxolol. We propose several possible explanations for this phenomenon. METHODS: Charts of three patients with glaucoma who developed periocular cutaneous pigmentary changes while on betaxolol were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Case #1 was a 47-year-old black man with primary open angle glaucoma, started on betaxolol 0.5% in both eyes in January 1981. Bilateral hypopigmentation of the eyelids was first documented in October 1987. Betaxolol wa…

Long-term results of carbon dioxide laser resurfacing of the face.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of, and the complications associated with, carbon dioxide laser treatment of rhytidosis and solar aging. METHODS: This retrospective report describes our experience with 47 patients who underwent entire facial carbon dioxide laser resurfacing. RESULTS: The mean improvement in facial rhytid score at long-term follow-up was 45%. This improvement was consistent in all facial subsites. With the exception of 1 case of hyperpigmentation, which resolved within 2 years of treatment, hypopigmentation was the only long-term adverse effect. This compli…

Fractional photothermolysis for treatment of poikiloderma of civatte.

Poikiloderma of Civatte refers to a change in the skin where there is atrophy, hyper- and hypopigmentation, and dilation of fine blood vessels (telangiectasia). These alterations often cause cosmetic disfigurement, most commonly in middle-aged or elderly women with a fair complexion. Several treatment modalities, based on the theory of selective photothermolysis, including argon lasers, KTP lasers, pulsed dye lasers, and intense pulsed light devices, have been used to treat this condition in the past. Clinical experience has shown that complete clearing is difficult to achieve. Moreover, depen…

Dilemmas in the management of rhinophyma in pigmented individuals.

Rhinophyma affects predominantly the Caucasian population and is rare in those with Fitzpatrick skin type IV-VI. Diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation. Prominent features include abnormal coloration and texture of skin, impaired vascularity, irregular nodular exophytic growth and telangiectasia. Management can be surgical or dermatological. Surgery remains the mainstay of treatment but achieving an acceptable aesthetic result can be challenging, particularly in those with pigmented skin. Postsurgical hyper- and hypopigmentation make for unpredictable outcomes requiring appropriate preopera…

[Hereditary pigmentary disorders].

Pigmentation in human skin differs individually and is regulated by more than 100 genes. The discovery of an increasing number of these genes has shed light on the molecular basis and pathogenesis of genetic pigmentary disorders. They are very rare and can be caused by changes in melanocyte number or melanin synthesis as well as development, transport and transfer of melanosomes. Pigmentary disorders can be divided into hyper- and hypopigmentation, of which the distribution can be diffuse or localized. Localized hypopigmentation can be found in piebaldism, Waardenburg syndrome and Tietz syndro…

Long-term survival in a cat with pancreatic adenocarcinoma treated with surgical resection and toceranib phosphate.

CASE SUMMARY: Primary pancreatic adenocarcinoma is an uncommon neoplasm seen in cats and often has a poor prognosis. We report a case of an 8-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat weighing 5.8 kg diagnosed with pancreatic adenocarcinoma treated with surgical resection and toceranib phosphate, which had a progression-free interval of 1148 days and survived for more than 1436 days. The treatment was well tolerated; however, the cat developed generalised coat hypopigmentation. RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION: To our knowledge, the cat in our report has the longest progression-free interv…

Molecular genetic and clinical evaluation of three Chinese families with X-linked ocular albinism.

X-linked ocular albinism (OA1) is an X-linked inherited disease characterized by hypopigmentation of the fundus and nystagmus. Our study performed mutation analysis of the G protein-coupled receptor 143 gene (GPR143) and assessed the clinical characteristics of OA1 in three Chinese families. Three novel mutations, c.333_360+14del42insCTT, c.276G>A (p.W92X), and c.793C>T (p.R265X), were identified in GPR143 by PCR followed by Sanger sequencing in these families. All affected individuals presented with nystagmus, photophobia, poor visual acuity, foveal hypoplasia and varying degrees of hypopigme…

[Oculocutaneous albinism].

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is an inherited condition characterized by hypopigmentation of the skin, hair, and eyes. Ocular involvement is often severe with photophobia, decreased visual acuity due to foveal hypoplasia, nystagmus, and strabism secondary to defective routing of optic axons in the chiasma. Cutaneous hypopigmentation is responsible for diminished photoprotection that places patients at increased risk for skin cancers. OCA also occurs in a number of life-threatening conditions, including Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome, Chediak-Higashi syndrome, and Griscelli-Prunieras syndrome. Most …

Evoked potentials in albinos: efficacy of pattern stimuli in detecting misrouted optic fibers.

Misrouting of retinogeniculostriate projections associated with retinal hypopigmentation has been found to be a general phenomenon in mammals, including humans. Anomalous optic pathway projections of albinos may be detected by recording visually evoked potentials (VEPs). To determine the efficacy of various stimulus conditions for detecting misrouted optic fibers, we compared flash, modulated light, pattern reversal and pattern onset/offset (appearance/disappearance) stimuli. Pattern onset/offset were found superior in detecting anomalies of misrouting of retinogeniculostriate projections. As …
