The sex role identity of male drug abusers.

Administered a revised version of the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) to clients at a drug-addict rehabilitation agency in New York City (N = 203). Three samples of undergraduates were the comparison groups. In addition, information that related to demographic and family characteristics, attitudes toward parents and opposite sex, and MMPI scores were collected on the clients. Results indicate the revised BSRI has high internal consistency reliability for the addict sample. There is a modest correlation between sex-role identity score and reported reasons for drug use, as well as for the MF and S

Understanding How Negative Emotions Affect Hazard Assessment Abilities in Construction: Insights from Wearable EEG and the Moderating Role of Psychological Capital.

Background: The construction industry faces significant safety hazards, frequent accidents, and inadequate management. Studies identify unsafe worker behaviors as the primary cause of construction accidents. However, most research overlooks the psychological state, particularly emotions, of construction workers. Methods: This study designed a behavioral experiment integrating social cognitive neuroscience, collecting real-time EEG data to classify and recognize fear, anger, and neutral emotions. Variance analysis explored differences in safety hazard identification and risk assessment under th

Sociotropic cognition moderates stress-induced cardiovascular responsiveness in women through effects on total peripheral resistance, but not cardiac output.

Although cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality in women, few studies have examined the role of psychosocial factors in its development. This study examined the moderating effects of sociotropic cognition (SC), a need for social acceptance and approval, on psychosocial stress-induced cardiovascular responsiveness (CVR) and affect reactivity in women. Sixty-eight normotensive, college-aged females were randomly assigned to a low or high social threat condition. Measures of systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressures (SBP, DBP and MAP, respectively), heart

Fetishism in a woman.

Fetishism is generally considered to be a perversion occurring only in males. In this paper a clinical illustration of an adult woman with a fetishistic perversion is offered and considered within the context of the classic concept of fetishism originally described by Freud. Similarities and differences between male and female fetishism are discussed, with attention given to the greater complexity of the perversion as it occurs in a woman. The clinical example confirms the existence of fetishism in women and suggests that subtle forms of the perversion may go unnoticed and be more prevalent th

The shifting sands of self: a framework for the experience of self in addiction.

The self is a common yet unclear theme in addiction studies. William James's model of self provides a framework to explore the experience of self. His model details the subjective and objective constituents, the sense of self-continuity through time, and the ephemeral and plural nature of the changing self. This exploration yields insights into the self that can be usefully applied to subjective experiences with psychoactive drugs of addiction. Results of this application add depth to the common understanding of self in addiction, acknowledge the importance of feelings and choice in the sense

Cultural factors enhancing resilience and protecting against maladjustment in African American adolescents with mild mental retardation.

Researchers have found elevated risk for maladjustment associated with being an African American adolescent in an urban environment as well as being an individual with mental retardation. The culturally relevant factors of ethnic identification, intergenerational support, and church support were investigated in relation to high risk exposure on maladjustment in 147 urban African American adolescents enrolled in EMR special education classes. Maladjustment was measured with both self- and parent-report. Risk exposure was measured in the personal, social, and community domains. Results indicate

The dissonance of "expectation-reality": a narrative study on preoperative identity expectations and postoperative identity reconstruction of patients after metabolic and bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: More than 1 billion people globally live with obesity. Individuals who have undergone metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) face identity reconstruction challenges linked to poor dietary adherence and psychological distress. Few studies analyze the mechanism of dissonance between preoperative identity expectations and postoperative reality, leaving a psychosocial support gap for long-term recovery. OBJECTIVES: To explore the dynamic collision between preoperative identity expectations and postoperative reality and identify key turning points in identity reconstruction among patien

The moderating role of sexual identity centrality in the association between gay community stress and social anxiety among sexual minority men.

Gay community stress has been linked to social anxiety among sexual minority men; however, the moderating role of identity-related processes (e.g., sexual identity centrality) has yet to be examined in this association. The present study investigated the association between gay community stress and two measures of social anxiety (i.e., self-reported social anxiety symptoms and interviewer-based diagnostic assessment of social anxiety disorder), as well as the moderating role of sexual identity centrality. Data come from the baseline assessment of a randomized controlled trial testing an LGBTQ-

Interactive Effects of Racism and Racial Centrality on ADHD Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Although race-related stress is associated with numerous mental health outcomes, no previous research has examined associations with ADHD symptoms. We examine how such associations differ in Black Americans based on racial identity to allow for more nuanced understandings of racial discrimination's association with ADHD symptoms. METHODS: This study asked a sample of Black Americans to answer questionnaires assessing race-related stress, ADHD symptoms, and racial centrality. RESULTS: In predicting ADHD symptoms, we found a positive effect of race-related stress and a negative effe

Psychodermatologic Effects of Atopic Dermatitis and Acne: A Review on Self-Esteem and Identity.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) and acne vulgaris are among the most-prevalent skin diseases in children. Both have been well documented in the literature to have significant negative effects on quality of life. Herein, we discuss the results of a comprehensive literature review aimed at assessing the impact of acne and AD on self-esteem and identity. We highlight clinical tools for their assessment and offer coping strategies for patients and families. Multiple factors including relationships with parents and classmates, sports participation, and the sex of the patient contribute to the development of

Understand the queer world of the L-esbian body: using Queer as Folk and The L Word to address the construction of the lesbian body.

Television is a tremendous force in constructing social understandings of the body. Using the first season of The L Word and Queer as Folk, this article addresses the manners in which the lesbian body is created and conveyed within a queer media world. Although diverse and complex, the images of the lesbian body have been created to be consumed by heterosexuals as well as lesbians and gay men. Central to this transformation of body is the creation of a consumable butch body--a body that is read firstly as a woman, but offers opportunities for the queer consumer to read lesbianism, even a versi

Testing an extended theory of planned behaviour to predict young people's sun safety in a high risk area.

OBJECTIVES: The present research examined the sun protection intentions and behaviours of young people in a high risk skin cancer area using an extended theory of planned behaviour (TPB) incorporating additional social influences of group and image norms. DESIGN: The study employed a prospective design to examine young people's sun protection intentions and behaviour. METHOD: Participants (N=1,134), aged 12-20 years, were students (school, university, TAFE) and young employees living in Queensland, Australia. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing the TPB predictors (attitude, subj

Behavior Evaluation Scale: validity in studies on social anxiety.

The present study was an initial effort to evaluate the use of the Behavior Evaluation Scale, a measure of the tendency to perceive behavior as pathological, in studies on social anxiety. 61 undergraduate students provided ratings on attributional dimensions and completed the scale as well as the Fear of Negative Evaluation questionnaire. There was a moderate correlation of .48 between the Behavior Evaluation Scale scores and fear of evaluation. In addition, participants who perceived the behavior as pathological scored higher on fear of evaluation only if they made internal or general attribu

Similarities in self-depictions of female alcoholics and psychiatric outpatients: examination of Eysenck's dimension of emotionality in women.

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) item response rates of samples of female alcoholics and of nonsubstance-abusing female psychiatric outpatients were compared with those of three samples of putative psychiatric normals--female adults, medical outpatients and college students--to find items to which the two psychiatric patient samples would respond similarly to each other, but differently from normals. A total of 25 items were located that satisfied a stringent set of selection criteria. The responses of additional samples of alcoholics, psychiatric outpatients and putative
