Frequency effect of 0.35-1.0 Hz horizontal translational oscillation on motion sickness and the somatogravic illusion.

BACKGROUND: Low frequency translational oscillation can provoke motion sickness in land vehicles, ships and aircraft. HYPOTHESIS: Nauseogenicity should decrease towards the higher frequencies. METHODS: Some 12 subjects were exposed to horizontal sinusoidal motion (3.6 m.s-2 peak) at four different frequencies 0.35, 0.50, 0.70, and 1.00 Hz, at 1-week intervals, latin square order. Subjects were seated in the upright position; motion was through the head-body X-axis. Motion was stopped (motion endpoint) at moderate nausea or after 30 min. RESULTS: The proportion of subjects experiencing moder

The effect of multisensory illusions on pain and perceived burning sensations in patients with Burning Mouth Syndrome: A proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic pain disorder affecting the oral cavity. Previous work has shown promising analgesic results of bodily illusions in other chronic pain conditions. The aim of this proof-of-concept, pilot study was to investigate whether bodily illusions reduce pain in BMS patients. METHODS: Nine participants diagnosed with BMS underwent bodily illusions using a MIRAGE-mediated reality system. All participants completed four conditions and performed standardised movements of the tongue. First, a baseline condition was performed while the tongue was viewed a…

The illusion of functional stability: functional redundancy does not equal functional insurance in a natural-engineered aquatic continuum.

Functional redundancy-the capacity of multiple species to perform similar ecological functions-is widely regarded as a buffer that stabilizes ecosystem processes. However, whether functional redundancy truly translates into functional insurance remains unverified in microbial communities. Here, by integrating metagenomics and metatranscriptomics from 52 samples across a natural-engineered aquatic continuum in the Yanjin River watershed, China, results show that functional redundancy and functional insurance are fundamentally decoupled. We constructed a dual-layer analytical framework linking g

Increased excitation enhances the sound-induced flash illusion by impairing multisensory causal inference in the schizophrenia spectrum.

The spectrum of schizophrenia is characterised by an altered sense of self with known impairments in tactile sensitivity, proprioception, body-self boundaries, and self-recognition. These are thought to be produced by failures in multisensory integration mechanisms, commonly observed as enlarged temporal binding windows during audiovisual illusion tasks. To our knowledge, there is an absence of computational explanations for multisensory integration deficits in patients with schizophrenia and individuals with high schizotypy, particularly at the neurobiological level. We implemented a multisen

The statistical illusion of a global HIV endgame: disparities in regional progress toward 95-95-95 targets.

This study analyzes prevalence growth rates across regions using UNAIDS data and statistical modeling to forecast trends through 2050. Globally, the 95-95-95 targets are projected to be achieved by 2035, 2034, and 2025, respectively, largely due to the success of robust interventions in Eastern and Southern Africa. While some progress has also been made in other regions, including improvements in treatment coverage and testing uptake in parts of Latin America and Asia, significant gaps remain, with a continued high burden and sustained accumulation of new infections in certain countries, where

The effects of local vibration inducing a tonic vibration reflex or movement illusion on acute modulations of corticospinal excitability.

Stimulation of muscle afferents by local vibration (LV) can lead to two distinct perceptual and motor responses: the tonic vibration reflex (TVR) or the movement illusion. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of TVR and movement illusion on corticospinal excitability. In two experiments, EMG activity of the vibrated flexor carpi radialis (FCR) muscle (80 Hz, 6 min) and the extensor carpi radialis (ECR) muscle were recorded. Illusion was assessed using questionnaires. LV conditions were adjusted to favour either TVR (visual attention focused on the vibrating wrist) or ILLUSION (hidden hand,

Trapped by the Arrows: Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and the Illusion of Control in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

We present the case of a 25-year-old female patient with a 20-year history of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), who experienced recurrent episodes of shakiness, diaphoresis, and dizziness, despite normal blood glucose levels. These symptoms were attributed to changes in the direction of the arrows displayed on her continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device. Further investigations, including capillary and venous blood glucose measurements, ruled out biochemical hypoglycemia. Psychiatric evaluation using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) criteria exc

Can you believe your eyes? Positive schizotypy is associated with increased susceptibility to the Müller-Lyer illusion.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Visual illusions provide a unique opportunity to understand cognitive and perceptual alterations in schizophrenia-spectrum conditions. Schizophrenia patients often exhibit increased susceptibility to the Müller-Lyer illusion. Here, we investigate susceptibility to the Müller-Lyer visual illusion in the general population with different levels of schizotypy. STUDY DESIGN: We assessed a population-based convenience sample (N = 263) on an online platform. In addition to basic demographics, participants completed the Müller-Lyer illusion, the Cardiff Anomalous Perceptio…

Subjective embodiment during the rubber hand illusion predicts severity of premonitory sensations and tics in Tourette Syndrome.

In Tourette Syndrome, the expression of tics and commonly preceding premonitory sensations is associated with perturbed subjective feelings of self-control and agency. We compared responses to the Rubber Hand Illusion in 23 adults with TS and 22 controls. Both TS and control participants reported equivalent subjective embodiment of the artificial hand: feelings of ownership, location, and agency were greater during synchronous visuo-tactile stimulation, compared to asynchronous. However, individuals with TS did not manifest greater proprioceptive drift, an objective marker of embodiment observ

The invisibility cloak illusion: People (incorrectly) believe they observe others more than others observe them.

Whether at a coffee shop, in a waiting room, or riding the bus, people frequently observe the other people around them. Yet they often fail to realize how much other people engage in the same behavior, and that they, therefore, also are being observed. Because it is logically impossible that people, on average, are the subjects of observation more than they are objects of it, the belief that one watches others more than one is watched is an illusion. Several studies show that people incorrectly believe that they observe others more than other people observe them. We call this mistaken belief t

Are movements necessary for the sense of body ownership? Evidence from the rubber hand illusion in pure hemiplegic patients.

A question still debated within cognitive neuroscience is whether signals present during actions significantly contribute to the emergence of human's body ownership. In the present study, we aimed at answer this question by means of a neuropsychological approach. We administered the classical rubber hand illusion paradigm to a group of healthy participants and to a group of neurological patients affected by a complete left upper limb hemiplegia, but without any propriceptive/tactile deficits. The illusion strength was measured both subjectively (i.e., by a self-report questionnaire) and behavi

Abnormal vibration induced illusion of movement in essential tremor: evidence for abnormal muscle spindle afferent function.

OBJECTIVES: Vibration induced illusion of movement (VIIM) is abnormal in patients with idiopathic focal dystonia, an abnormality which corrects with fatigue of the vibrated muscle. Since dystonia and essential tremor sometimes coexist in families, we investigated the perception of VIIM and the effect of fatigue on VIIM in patients with essential tremor. METHODS: VIIM in 18 patients with essential tremor was compared with VIIM in 18 healthy control participants before and after volitional fatigue of the vibrated muscles. RESULTS: Vibration of the immobilised biceps produced a subnormal VIIM i

Breaking the Zero Dimensional Illusion in Te(IV) Metal Halide Hybrids via Electronic Dimensionality Control.

Zero-dimensional (0D) metal halide hybrids (MHHs) containing ns2 metal ions are attractive solid-state emitters, yet their photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) often vary unpredictably even among structurally similar systems. To identify the factors governing emissivity, we investigate a series of 0D Te(IV)-based hybrids, A2TeCl6 (A+ = BzEt3N+, BzMe2PhN+, Ph4P+, Ph3EtP+), which exhibit nearly identical optical features but display large differences in PLQY and lifetimes. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Hirshfeld surface analysis, and Voronoi polyhedral mapping reveal that these variation

Rubber voice illusion exposed neural correlates of voice perception and vocal adaptation across the continuum of psychosis.

The Rubber Voice Illusion is an auditory analogue of the classic Rubber Hand Illusion, a “mind-trick” for the voice. When speakers hear a stranger’s utterances that are perfectly time‑locked and syllable‑matched to their own voice, many momentarily adopt that alien voice as self‑generated. We used this illusion to probe the integrity of predictive auditory mechanisms across the psychosis continuum. Sixty healthy adults completed three Talk‑Listen conditions while high‑density EEG was recorded: veridical (live playback of own voice), stranger‑match (congruent stranger voice) and stranger‑mismat

Illusion of control and passion mediate the relationship between winning exposure and problem lottery gambling in a multigroup analysis.

Previous studies have highlighted the key role of winning exposure in problem lottery gambling. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying this relationship, particularly in mainland China. The current study investigated the structural relationships among winning exposure, illusion of control, harmonious passion, obsessive passion, and problem lottery gambling across three age groups. A total of 3602 Chinese lottery gamblers (3032 males, mean age = 39.72 years) were recruited to participate in this study and completed measures of demographic information, winning exposure, illusio

Strong and aversive cold processing and pain facilitation in fibromyalgia patients relates to augmented thermal grill illusion.

The thermal grill illusion (TGI) is assumed to result from crosstalk between the thermoreceptive and nociceptive pathways. To elucidate this further, we compared 40 female fibromyalgia patients to 20 healthy women in an exploratory cross-sectional study. Sensations (cold, warm/heat, unpleasantness, pain and burning) evoked by 20 °C, 40 °C and alternating 20 °C/40 °C (TGI) and somatosensory profiles according to standardized quantitative sensory testing (QST) were assessed on the palm of the dominant hand. Compared to healthy controls, fibromyalgia patients reported stronger thermal grill-evoke

Impact of CPAP on Forehead Near-infrared Spectroscopy Measurements in Patients With Acute Respiratory Failure: Truth or Illusion.

BACKGROUND: Critically ill patients with acute respiratory failure admitted to an intensive care unit are at high risk for cerebral hypoxia. We investigated the impact of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on regional cerebral tissue oxygenation (rSO2). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 40 extubated surgical intensive care unit patients requiring classic oxygen therapy (COT) for acute respiratory failure were examined. Near-infrared spectroscopy (INVOS 5100C, Covidien) was used for 30 minutes to detect bilateral rSO2 during COT via facemask (6 L/min) and CPAP therapy (40% fract
