Characterizing impulsivity in individuals with methamphetamine and methcathinone use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) are characterized by loss of control in drug use, such as increased impulsivity. M … IONS: These findings suggest that MUD and MCUD participants differ in impulsivity traits but not in impulsive behaviors, implying that impulsive traits and behaviors represent different aspects of impulsivity.

Increased impulsivity associated with severity of suicide attempt history in patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a prominent and measurable characteristic of bipolar disorder that can contribute to risk for suicidal behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between impulsivity and severity of past suicidal behavior, a potential predictor of eventual suicide, in patients with bipolar disorder. METHOD: In bipolar disorder subjects with either a definite history of attempted suicide or no such history, impulsivity was assessed with both a questionnaire (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale) and behavioral laboratory performance measures (immediate memory/dela

The independent effects of child sexual abuse and impulsivity on lifetime suicide attempts among female patients.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a causal agent in many negative adulthood outcomes, including the risk for life-threatening behaviors such as suicide ideation and suicide attempts. Traumatic events such as CSA may pose risk in the healthy development of cognitive and emotional functioning during childhood. In fact, high impulsivity, a risk factor for suicidal behavior, is characteristic of CSA victims. The current study aims to understand the relations among CSA, impulsivity, and frequency of lifetime suicide attempts among a female patient sample admitted for suicidal behavior. Participants inclu

The relationship between impulsivity and impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

A range of behaviors presumed to be related to dopaminergic medications have been recently recognized in Parkinson's disease (PD). We evaluated 50 consecutive cognitively intact PD patients on stable dopamine agonist and levodopa therapy and 100 healthy controls for compulsive sexual behavior, compulsive buying, or intermittent explosive disorders assessed by the Minnesota Impulsive Disorders Interview (MIDI), pathological gambling (South Oaks Gambling Screen, SOGS), impulsivity (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale), compulsivity (Maudsley obsessional-compulsive inventory), and depression scores (Geri

Impulsivity in first-degree relatives at risk of psychosis and mania: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Impulsivity is elevated in psychosis and during mania in bipolar disorder. Studies in unaffected relatives may help establish whether impulsivity is a heritable, state independent endophenotype. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine whether impulsivity is elevated in unaffected relatives of those with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder, compared to controls. Databases were systematically searched up until March 2023 for articles reporting data on a behavioral or self-report measure of impulsivity in first-degree relatives and controls. Ni

Family history of suicide and impulsivity.

A family history of suicide indicates a raised risk for suicidal behavior; this liability might be familially transmitted as an impulsive-aggression trait. To examine the impulsivity factor, data from 258 abstinent drug dependent patients who were interviewed about their family history of suicidal behavior and who completed the Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS) were examined. The results showed that patients with a family history of suicidal behavior had significantly higher BIS scores for risk taking than patients without a family history of suicidal behavior. Also, patients with a family histo

Self-harm and bulimia nervosa: a complex connection.

There is some evidence to suggest that eating disordered individuals are unusually likely to engage in self-harm behavior. However, the nature of the relationship among self-harm, bulimia nervosa, and related constructs such as borderline personality disorder and multi-impulsive bulimia nervosa remains unclear. This article briefly addresses the nature of this relationship and discusses two possible mechanisms for self-harm behavior in bulimia nervosa. Additionally, a protocol for managing such behavior in the treatment of eating disordered individuals is presented.

Suicide Attempts in First Episodes of Major Psychiatric Disorders With Psychotic Features.

Suicidal behavior is prevalent with first psychotic episodes, but reports of associated factors involve inconsistent findings and emphasis on schizophrenia. We evaluated suicide attempt rates and associated risk factors in 395 first-episode patients with various DSM-5-TR diagnoses with psychotic features, comparing 83 suicidal patients to others. Suicide attempt risk averaged 21.0%, with the final diagnosis ranked as follows: major depression, bipolar I depression, bipolar I mixed features, schizoaffective-depressed, unspecified psychosis, schizophrenia, schizoaffective-bipolar, bipolar I mani

Differential attentional control mechanisms by two distinct noradrenergic coeruleo-frontal cortical pathways.

The attentional control of behavior is a higher-order cognitive function that operates through attention and response inhibition. The locus … tion or inhibition in operant tests measuring attention and response inhibition (i.e., a measure of impulsive behavior). We show that LC neuron stimulation increases goal-directed attention and decreases impulsivity, while its suppression exacerbates distractibility and increases impulsive responding. Remarkably, we found that attention and response inhibition are u …

Characterizing aggression and its association to anger and hostility among male veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The basis for the associations among anger, hostility, aggressive behavior, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains unclear. We suggest classifying aggressive behavior may elucidate the associations among these factors. On the basis of diagnostic and neurobiological similarities between impulsive aggression (IA) and PTSD, we proposed that IA was the predominant form of aggression in PTSD and that anger and hostility would not significantly predict PTSD when IA was also included as a predictor. METHODS: We used cross-sectional self-report data obtained from two samples of

Low non-oxidative glucose metabolism and violent offending: an 8-year prospective follow-up study.

Violent offenders have abnormalities in their glucose metabolism as indicated by decreased glucose uptake in their prefrontal cortex and a low blood glucose nadir in the glucose tolerance test. We tested the hypothesis that low non-oxidative glucose metabolism (NOG) predicts forthcoming violent offending among antisocial males. Glucose metabolism was measured using the insulin clamp method among 49 impulsive, violent, antisocial offenders during a forensic psychiatric examination. Those offenders who committed at least one new violent crime during the 8-year follow-up had a mean NOG of 1.4 sta

Dark Tetrad personality traits, paraphilic interests, and the role of impulsivity: an EEG-study using a Go/No-Go paradigm.

Maladaptive personality traits, such as 'dark personalities' are found to result in a diverse set of negative outcomes, including paraphilic interests and associated (illegal) behaviors. It is however unclear how these are exactly related, and if related, if then only those individuals higher on dark personality traits and higher impulsivity engage in paraphilic behaviors. In the current study, 50 participants were recruited to investigate the relationship between Dark Tetrad personality traits (i.e., narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism and everyday sadism), paraphilic interests (arousal

Self-Injury in Adolescence Is Associated with Greater Behavioral Risk Avoidance, Not Risk-Taking.

Strategies to link impulsivity and self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) show highly variable results, and may differ depending on the impulsivity measure used. To better understand this lack of consistency, we investigated correlations between self-report and behavioral impulsivity, inhibitory control, SIBs, and rumination. We included participants aged 13-17 years with either current or remitted psychopathology who have (n = 31) and who do not have (n = 14) a history of SIBs. Participants completed self-report measures of impulsivity, the Rumination Responsiveness Scale (RRS), and two behavioral m

Levels of impulsivity in individuals with cannabis use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorder consists of the presence of cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms, indicating continuous use of one or more substances by the individual. The literature points to the existence of a relationship between impulsive behavior, in which individuals tend to act thoughtlessly and with a lower level of planning, and consumption of substances including cannabis. OBJECTIVES: To examine the presence and severity of impulsivity in individuals with cannabis use disorder and investigate associations between sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and i…

Impulsiveness and lack of inhibitory control in eating disorders.

UNLABELLED: Eating disorders are considered to lie on a spectrum of disorders with varying degrees of obsessive-compulsive and impulsive traits. Restrictive anorexia nervosa patients (AN-R) are thought to belong to the obsessive pole of the spectrum, and purging-anorexia (AN-P) and bulimia nervosa (BN) patients to the impulsive pole. In this study we have compared impulsive traits in three groups of eating disordered patients (total N=56) and a control group of 83 female students. Information about impulsive traits and lack of inhibitory control was gathered by means of standardized rating sca

Multi-impulsivity of Japanese patients with eating disorders: primary and secondary impulsivity.

Several studies have noted that multi-impulsive bulimia nervosa tends to be refractory to treatment. However, it is not known whether these impulsivities are an expression of more fundamental psychopathology or simply the consequence of chaotic eating behaviors. Studies of the temporal relationship between the onset of eating disorder and the occurrence of impulsive behaviors will facilitate a better understanding of these issues. Subjects consisted of 60 patients with anorexia nervosa restricting type (AN-R), 62 patients with anorexia nervosa binge-eating/purging type (AN-BP), 114 patients wi…

Planning of suicide attempts among depressed inpatients ages 50 and over.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal behavior is heterogeneous; suicide attempts can be impulsive (lower planned) or reflect forethought and preparation (higher planned). Lower planned and higher planned attempts may have different correlates that require different prevention strategies. Based on a model of suicide planning relevant to middle-aged and older adults, we tested the following hypotheses: physical illness burden, decreased functional capacity, hopelessness, and living alone are associated with suicide attempts that are more extensively planned; lower cognitive functioning is associated with suicid
