One potential reason for punishing criminal offenders is so that third parties will become willing to socially reintegrate the offenders after their punishments have been completed. Another reason is simply to satisfy third-party desires that appropriate punishments be issued. OBJECTIVE: To build upon research that investigates the health significance of familial and former incarceration with special emphasis on obesity risk among native-born Black (ie, African American) men.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2001-2003 National Survey of American Life (NSAL), focusing on native-born Black men (n=1140), the demographic group that bears the brunt of mass incarceration. A pyrene-based metal-organic framework (MOF) SION-8 captured iodine (I2 ) vapor with a capacity of 460 and 250 mg g-1 MOF at room temperature and 75 °C, respectively. In the context of the ever increasing incarcerated population in the U.S. and a lack of data documenting weight status of this population, we document the weight status of male inmates in a unified correctional facility in Rhode Island using BMI and waist circumference. This needs assessment describes the characteristics of men most at risk of weight gain and elevated disease risk associated with their weight status in order to build the groundwork for a collaborative health intervention.

Killings by juvenile homicide offenders (JHOs) who use accomplices have been increasing since the 1980s and currently represent approximately half of juvenile arrests for murder in the United States. Nevertheless, prior research has not compared JHOs who kill alone with JHOs who kill in groups. An 85-year-old woman presented with genital prolapse (rectocele and cystocele) with stress urinary incontinence. Three days after laparoscopic promonto fixation, bowel became incarcerated in the opening of a 5-mm port site. This clinical case forces us to reconsider the harmlessness of 5-mm ports. Urinary retention resulting from urethral obstruction by a retroverted, gravid uterus is an uncommon disorder that is reported only once in the Emergency Medicine literature. Yet these patients may present in extreme distress and precipitate considerable confusion regarding the cause of and solution to this problem. No study evaluating outcome, risk of complications, or therapy exists. We present two cases that clarify diagnostic and therapeutic controversies and provide a better understanding of what is known about the pathophysiology and treatment alternatives.

The low morbidity and good results of elective herniorrhaphy in children are adversely affected by incarceration. Since incarceration is a potentially avoidable complication, we reviewed 908 consecutive cases to determine its incidence and consequences in children awaiting elective operation for an inguinal hernia.
