Infant feeding in the first year. 2: feeding practices from 6-12 months of life.

The mainstay of nutrition in infants below six months of age is breast and/or formula milk. Infants aged between six and 12 months require additional sources of nutrition and numerous oral and developmental milestones have to be achieved to support normal development of feeding skills. Requirements increase during this period for protein, vitamin D, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, zinc, iron and magnesium. This increased demand is met through weaning foods and breast-feeding, and, if breast milk is not available, through a suitable milk formula. The choice of milk formula above the a

Prevalence, Characteristics, and Outcome of Cow's Milk Protein Allergy in Chinese Infants: A Population-Based Survey.

BACKGROUND: Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is commonly seen in children. There have been no reports of the true prevalence of CMPA in Chinese infants. The aim of this population-based study is to determine the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and outcome of CMPA in Chinese infants. METHODS: We carried out a prospective survey in 7 participating hospitals throughout southern China. We included infants ≤12 months of age during the survey. For those suspected of CMPA, oral food challenge with cow's milk protein (CMP) was performed. A follow-up telephone interview was conducted at 12 mont

Ethnic differences in infant feeding practices and their relationship with BMI at 3 years of age - results from the Born in Bradford birth cohort study.

The present study aimed to explore previously unreported ethnic differences in infant feeding practices during the introduction of solid foods, accounting for maternal and birth factors, and to determine whether these feeding patterns are associated with BMI at 3 years of age. An observational study using Poisson regression was carried out to investigate the relationship between ethnicity and infant feeding practices and linear regression was used to investigate the relationship between feeding practices and BMI at 3 years of age in a subsample of 1327 infants in Bradford. It was found that co

Effect of maternal nutritional status and infant supplementation during lactation on postpartum amenorrhea.

This paper explores the effects of maternal nutritional status and food supplementation ingested by the infant on the duration of postpartum amenorrhea. A significant negative association was found between the nutritional status of the mother during the third trimester of pregnancy and the length of postpartum amenorrhea. A negative association was also found between infant supplementation and duration of postpartum amenorrhea. Each of these associations remained significant after controlling for the other, suggesting that both factors independently affect the length of postpartum amenorrhea.

Total parenteral nutrition exposure in neonates and the risk of long-term food allergy: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is essential for critically ill neonates but bypasses enteral stimulation and may induce gut dysbiosis, raising concern about long-term allergic outcomes. We hypothesized that neonatal TPN exposure is associated with an increased risk of food allergy in infants compared with the absence of TPN. METHODS: Using the South Korean National Health Insurance Service database, we followed 2,325,275 infants born between 2005 and 2010 from their first birthday until December 31, 2023. Our exposure of interest was TPN administered during the first 28 days of

How maternal malnutrition affects linear growth and development in the offspring.

Maternal malnutrition is common in the developing world and has detrimental effects on both the mother and infant. Pre-pregnancy nutritional status and weight gain during pregnancy are positively related to fetal growth and development. Internationally, there is no agreement on the method of diagnosis or treatment of moderate or severe malnutrition during pregnancy. Establishing clear guidelines for diagnosis and treatment will be essential in elevating the problem. Possible anthropometric measurements used to detect and monitor maternal malnutrition include pre-pregnancy BMI, weight gain, and

Nutritional Issues in Food Allergy.

Diet and nutrition play an important role in the development and management of food allergy. The diet of expectant mothers can have an effect on their offspring in terms of allergic outcomes. A host of confounding factors may influence this, with a maternal diet rich in fruits and vegetables, fish, vitamin D-rich foods associated with a lower risk of allergic disease in their children. More surprisingly, the consumption of milk and butter has also been shown to have a protective effect, especially in a farm environment. Similarly, the diet of the infant can also be important, not only in terms

[Rectal bleeding in infancy; could it be an allergy?].

Rectal bleeding in infants is frequently regarded as an alarming symptom for healthcare providers and often causes significant concern and anxiety among parents. In this article, we discuss two infants who were urgently referred to pediatric services for further evaluation. Both infants showed no signs of illness. The diagnosis in one case was ingested maternal blood and in the other Food Protein-Induced Allergic Proctocolitis (FPIAP), triggered by cow's milk. FPIAP is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy. FPIAP can also occur in exclusively breastfed infants when the lactating mother consumes cow'

Allergic proctocolitis: Evaluation and management.

Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) is a condition that causes rectal bleeding and mucous in stools, which typically presents in healthy infants within the first month of life and improves by 12 months of age. It can present in both breast- and formula-fed infants, with the most common implicated foods being cow's milk and soy protein. Currently, there are no widely accepted diagnostic criteria, but it is considered a clinical diagnosis, with FPIAP symptoms resolving with removal of culprit food(s) and recurrence with food reintroduction. Although the duration of the eliminatio

Food for the suckling: revolution and development.

The 1970's saw a renaissance in child nutrition, a major revision of infant feeding practice and substantial changes in food for the suckling. Many more babies are breast fed, those who are not receive an infant formula specifically designed for this period of life, and solid foods are no longer introduced in the early weeks. These changes have contributed to the improvement in the suckling's health, particularly the reduction in neonatal tetany, and in deaths from gastroenteritis. Developments in the 1980's should improve our knowledge of breast milk and its properties, advisable intakes of s

Influence of dietary manipulation on incidence of atopic disease in infants at risk.

Of 5,500 newborn infants whose family histories were screened, 900 were found to have anamnestic risk. Cord-blood IgE was evaluable in 4,677 of these newborns, of which 394 had levels > or = 1 IU/mL; 84 infants had both anamnestic risk and elevated cord-blood IgE levels. Parents of infants with anamnestic risk were informed of their child's risk of atopy. Additionally, for 391 infants at two of the three participating hospitals, a preventive diet was prescribed that recommended breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life, with maternal diet restricted to no more than 200 dL of cow milk per da

Role of breast-feeding in the prevention and treatment of diarrhoea.

Recent studies have again shown the beneficial effects of breast-feeding in preventing morbidity and mortality from diarrhoea in infants. A case-control study in Brazil has shown that young infants who are not breast-fed have a 25-time greater risk of dying of diarrhoea than those who are exclusively breast-fed. A longitudinal study in the urban slums of Lima, Peru found that exclusively breast-fed infants have a reduced risk of diarrhoeal morbidity when compared with infants receiving only water in addition to breast-milk. Both these studies, along with numerous others in developing countries

Food allergy.

Food allergy is now known to encompass a number of distinct clinical entities that follow the ingestion of specific food or food additives. Research continues to shed light on immediate reactions to foods and food protein-induced enterocolitis of newborns and infants. Adverse reactions to food additives remain an area of health concern. Studies of food allergies have entered an era in which improved clinical design is the hallmark of the research and conclusions may now be drawn reliably.

The Complexities of Early Peanut Introduction for the Practicing Allergist.

Recommendations for the timing of introducing major food allergens, such as peanut, into the diet of at-risk infants have undergone major changes in the past decade. The most substantial modification has been a shift toward advice that delaying beyond 4 to 6 months does not prevent and might actually increase the risk of food allergy. The Learning Early About Peanut (LEAP) study published last year provided strong evidence that early peanut introduction with regular ingestion has a potentially dramatic benefit. Although there is little current doubt of the effectiveness of early peanut introdu
