Forgetting, reminding, and remembering: the retrieval of lost spatial memory.

Retrograde amnesia can occur after brain damage because this disrupts sites of storage, interrupts memory consolidation, or interferes with memory retrieval. While the retrieval failure account has been considered in several animal studies, recent work has focused mainly on memory consolidation, and the neural mechanisms responsible for reactivating memory from stored traces remain poorly understood. We now describe a new retrieval phenomenon in which rats' memory for a spatial location in a watermaze was first weakened by partial lesions of the hippocampus to a level at which it could not be

Angiotensin modulates long-term memory expression but not long-term memory storage in the crab Chasmagnathus.

Memory reconsolidation is a dynamic process in which a previously consolidated memory becomes labile following reactivation by a reminder. In a previous study in the crab Chasmagnathus memory model, we showed that a water-shortage episode, via angiotensin modulation during reconsolidation, could reveal a memory that otherwise remains unexpressed: weakly trained animals cannot reveal long-term memory (LTM) except when an episode of noticeable ethological meaning, water deprivation, is contingent upon reconsolidation. However, these results are at variance with two of our previous interpretation

Computer processing of audiological and vestibular data. II. A further note.

This paper provides an addendum to an earlier paper describing the development of a computer record system for patient data. The specific problems addressed pertain to the storage and retrieval of historical information, physical signs and diagnosis. Some preliminary comparisons of audiological and vestibular test results are given for groups of patients with diagnoses of acoustic neuroma, Ménière's disease, temporal bone fracture and vestibular neuronitis.

ADVISE: First Results of a European Interoperative Information System Network Developed for the ADenoVirus Initiative Study in Epidemiology.

Adenoviral conjunctivitis is extremely contagious, causes a form of conjunctivitis. Therefore, it is important to identify patients who suffer from adenoviral conjunctivitis, as early as possible, in order to contain the disease. We present the 6 independent but interoperable platforms developed for the purpose of a large European epidemiologic study (ADVISE), which has been implemented independently in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the UK. ADVISE is a non-interventional, observational epidemiology study with the objectives of assessing clinical characteristics and incidence of adenovirus

Some principles of the development of a clinical database/national register of selected inflammatory rheumatic diseases in the Czech Republic.

According to the World Health Organisation, rheumatic diseases are likely to go on occupying a prominent place worldwide. As to US statistics, rheumatic diseases are currently the most frequent chronic disorders and leading cause of disability. The development of functional clinical database or rheumatic diseases represents an essential condition how to acquire necessary epidemiological and other information on disorders under study. In 1999-2003, Institute of Rheumatology in cooperation with EuroMISE have developed clinical database/national register of selected systemic inflammatory rheumati

Increased Risk of Sarcomas in Children With Congenital Anomalies: Findings From the Genetic Overlap Between Anomalies and Cancer in Kids (GOBACK) Registry Linkage Study.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors that contribute disproportionately to cancer mortality in children. Although congenital anomalies are among the strongest known risk factors for childhood cancer, the risk of specific sarcoma subtypes among affected individuals has not yet been thoroughly evaluated. PROCEDURE: We obtained data on maternal and perinatal characteristics, congenital anomalies, and pediatric sarcoma diagnoses for all live births in nine states. We used Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interva

Automating the data extraction process for systematic reviews using GPT-4o and o3.

Large language models have shown promise for automating data extraction (DE) in systematic reviews (SRs), but most existing approaches require manual interaction. We developed an open-source system using GPT-4o to automatically extract data with no human intervention during the extraction process. We developed the system on a dataset of 290 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from a published SR about cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia. We evaluated the system on two other datasets: 5 RCTs from an updated search for the same review and 10 RCTs used in a separate published study that had

Prescriptions for insulin and insulin analogues in children with and without major congenital anomalies: a data linkage cohort study across six European regions.

UNLABELLED: Are children with major congenital anomalies more likely to develop diabetes requiring insulin therapy, as indicated by prescriptions for insulin, than children without congenital anomalies? The aim of this study is to evaluate prescription rates of insulin/insulin analogues in children aged 0-9 years with and without major congenital anomalies. A EUROlinkCAT data linkage cohort study, involving six population-based congenital anomaly registries in five countries. Data on children with major congenital anomalies (60,662) and children without congenital anomalies (1,722,912), the re

Child characteristics and early intervention referral and receipt of services: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Early Intervention (EI) is a federally mandated, state-administered system of care for children with developmental delays and disabilities under the age of three. Gaps exist in the process of accessing EI through pediatric primary care, and low rates of EI access are well documented and disproportionately affect poor and minority children. The aims of this paper are to examine child characteristics associated with gaps in EI (1) referral, (2) access and (3) service use. To our knowledge, this is the first study to leverage linked safety net health system pediatric primary care and

Educational outcomes among children with type 1 diabetes: Whole-of-population linked-data study.

BACKGROUND: Challenges with type 1 diabetes (T1D) blood glucose management and illness-related school absences potentially influence children's educational outcomes. However, evidence about the impact of T1D on children's education is mixed. The objectives were to estimate the effects of T1D on children's educational outcomes, and compare time since T1D diagnosis (recent diagnosis [≤2 years] and 3 to 10 years long exposure) on educational outcomes. METHODS: This whole-of-population study used de-identified, administrative linked-data from the South Australian Early Childhood Data Project. T1D

Classification of the universe of immune epitope literature: representation and knowledge gaps.

BACKGROUND: A significant fraction of the more than 18 million scientific articles currently indexed in the PubMed database are related to immune responses to various agents, including infectious microbes, autoantigens, allergens, transplants, cancer antigens and others. The Immune Epitope Database (IEDB) is an online repository that catalogs immune epitope reactivity data derived from articles listed in the National Library of Medicine PubMed database. The IEDB is maintained and continually updated by monitoring PubMed for new, potentially relevant references. METHODOLOGY: Herein we detail t

OpenMDC: an open-source framework for medical device communication.

We have developed an extensible, open source framework for collecting data from bedside medical devices which support RS-232 serial output. The system uses inexpensive hardware to convert RS-232 signals to Universal Serial Bus (USB) format, enabling "plug-and-play" device communication at low cost. A prototype of the system has been created and tested with Puritan-Bennett 840 ventilators.

A comparison of data captured at point of care versus data captured retrospectively.

Electronic data systems are being implemented in resource-poor HIV clinics to track and improve patient care. The great majority of these systems rely on paper forms and retrospective data entry, while a few have chosen to deploy point-of-care systems to collect data in real time. This study describes a comparison of data quality between these two approaches.

Segmentation of psoriasis vulgaris images using multiresolution-based orthogonal subspace techniques.

In this paper, a method is proposed for the segmentation of color images using a multiresolution-based signature subspace classifier (MSSC) with application to psoriasis images. The essential techniques consist of feature extraction and image segmentation (classification) methods. In this approach, the fuzzy texture spectrum and the two-dimensional fuzzy color histogram in the hue-saturation space are first adopted as the feature vector to locate homogeneous regions in the image. Then these regions are used to compute the signature matrices for the orthogonal subspace classifier to obtain a mo

A novel approach in diagnosing knee osteoarthritis for content based image retrieval in big data analytics and medical images.

The rapid growth in database size due to technological advances has led to difficulties in locating and accessing specific data components. While deep learning and other machine learning architectures are promising in retrieving data components, their effectiveness is more pronounced when addressing groups of diseases. On the contrary, this effectiveness decreases when large data sets are accessed. Content-based Image retrieval (CBIR) methods are used in large data sets. In this study, knee osteoarthritis detection was performed using a developed hybrid CBIR-based system. Knee Osteoarthritis i

Unplanned hospitalisations among subsidised nursing home residents in Singapore: Insights from a data linkage study.

INTRODUCTION: Hospitalisations can pose hazards and may not be an appropriate care setting for frail nursing home (NH) residents. Few studies have quantified the extent of NH resident hospitalisations in Singapore, hence we aimed to address this knowledge gap by studying characteristics of unplanned hospitalisations over a 1-year period. METHOD: This was a retrospective cohort study of 9922 subsidised residents across 59 NHs in Singapore, with analysis using administrative healthcare data. Key measures included inpatient admission and emergency department visit rates, final discharge diagnose

Post-Endoscopy Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Rate in a Tertiary Referral Centre: An Australian Data Linkage Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: High-quality gastroscopy is critical for early diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal cancers (UGCs), and assessment of missed cancers may serve as a key quality metric. Using a prospective gastroscopy database and data linkage with the Queensland Cancer Registry, we assessed the risk of developing UGC within 3 years of a cancer-negative gastroscopy at an Australian tertiary centre. Additional aims were to identify factors predictive of missed cancer, perform root cause analyses for missed cancers and assess overall survival. DESIGN/METHOD: We identified patients who were diagnosed wi
