The rhythmically active pyloric and gastric mill motor patterns in the stomatogastric ganglion of the crab, Cancer borealis, are influenced by modulatory projection neurons whose somata are located primarily in the other ganglia of the stomatogastric nervous system. One of these projection neurons exhibits substance P-like immunolabeling. However, bath application of substance P does not influence these motor patterns. To determine whether a different peptide is responsible for the substance P-like immunolabeling, we studied the presence and physiological effects of the locustatachykinins and

Having the life cycle divided into a larval and an adult stage, each dwelling in a separate habitat, is advantageous since it prevents competition for resources and separates development and reproduction into different stages. In holometabolous insects, larval life is characterized by intense feeding, growth, and molting, whereas the adults constitute the reproductive and highly mobile stage. This review discusses how this switch in lifestyle is reflected in the neuroendocrine system and peptidergic signaling. Neuropeptides and peptide hormones (collectively NPHs) are important regulators of m

Endophytic colonization by entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana enhances plant resistance to herbivores; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms, particularly those involving hormonal disruption of pests, remain poorly understood. This study examined whether root inoculation of tomato with B. bassiana suppresses whitefly Bemisia tabaci fitness via flavonoid modulation. Metabolomic profiling of leaf tissues showed a 3.5-fold accumulation of the isoflavonoid genistein in B. bassiana-inoculated plants. KEGG enrichment analysis indicated significant upregulation of the isoflavonoid biosy

Clothianidin (CLO) is a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide in agricultural systems and may pose risks to non-target aquatic organisms, including amphibians. Here, we evaluated acute and sublethal effects of CLO on Fejervarya cancrivora tadpoles, an important predator of insect pests in rice paddy ecosystems. Acute toxicity tests (96 h) yielded an LC50 of 50.41 mg a.i./L (with LC10, LC25 and LC30 values of 15.35, 31.96 and 36.07 mg a.i./L, respectively). Sublethal exposure at these concentrations significantly reduced body weight, whole-body length, and hindlimb length during metamorphosis.

Jasmonic acid (JA) and its derivatives are lipid-derived phytohormones that coordinate plant growth, development, and stress responses through the bioactive conjugate jasmonoyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile). Their role in reproductive development is well established, particularly in stamen maturation through the R2R3-MYB transcription factor MYB21, which has been considered largely flower-specific. Here, we reveal a previously unrecognized role of MYB21 in vegetative tissues of Arabidopsis thaliana. Although basal MYB21 transcript levels in leaves are extremely low and spatially restricted, wounding and

The domesticated silkworm Bombyx mori is both a major sericultural species and a powerful model for studying how environmental cues are converted into developmental decisions. A central seasonal trait in this species is embryonic diapause, a maternally programmed developmental arrest whose incidence is shaped by genetic background and environmental conditions experienced during the maternal generation. Recent genome-editing studies have provided new functional evidence for the role of circadian clock genes in this process, particularly the two silkworm cryptochromes, BmCRY1 and BmCRY2. BmCRY1

BACKGROUND: Extreme high temperatures significantly threaten insect development and reproduction. Small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) are crucial for thermal adaptation, but their specific roles in reproduction and heat stress response remain incompletely understood. This study investigates SfHSP19.8, a testis-enriched sHSP in the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), to elucidate its function.
RESULTS: Testis-specific expression of SfHSP19.8 occurred during the 6th- instar larval and pupal stages. Homozygous knockout mutants were generated using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Transcriptomic analysis

The striped fruit fly, Zeugodacus scutellata is a significant pest in East and Southeast Asia by damaging Cucurbitaceae blossoms and fruits. To control this pest, a novel strategy to suppress the gene(s) associated with sexually dimorphic phenotypes has been devised and implemented in a laboratory scale. However, comprehensive transcriptomic analysis related to this sex differentiation of Z. scutellata was necessary to determine effective target genes for the genetic control. We performed de novo assembly of the transcript obtained by paired-end sequencing using an Illumina HiSeq platform and

Rhodnius prolixus is a blood-gorging insect that is medically important since it transmits Chagas disease via feces and urine that contain the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. In adult females, ecdysteroid hormone (20-hydroxyecdysone, 20E) is involved in the growth of the ovary and development of eggs post-blood meal (PBM). Halloween genes are essential for ecdysteroid synthesis since they code for cytochrome P450 enzymes in the ecdysteroidogenic pathway. The ecdysone receptor (EcR/USP) binds 20E, resulting in activation of ecdysone-responsive genes. We have identified and characterized the Hallowe

Blood-feeding arthropods are considered an enormous public health threat. They are vectors of a plethora of infectious agents that cause potentially fatal diseases like Malaria, Dengue fever, Leishmaniasis, and Lyme disease. These vectors shine due to their own physiological idiosyncrasies, but one biological aspect brings them all together: the requirement of blood intake for development and reproduction. It is through blood-feeding that they acquire pathogens and during blood digestion that they summon a collection of multisystemic events critical for vector competence. The literature is foc

Aedes aegypti is the main vector of dengue fever transmission, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya in tropical and subtropical regions and it is considered to cause health risks to millions of people in the world. In this study, we search to obtain new molecules with insecticidal potential against Ae. aegypti via virtual screening. Pyriproxyfen was chosen as a template compound to search molecules in the database Zinc_Natural_Stock (ZNSt) with structural similarity using ROCS (rapid overlay of chemical structures) and EON (electrostatic similarity) software, and in the final search, the top 10

Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes are major African vectors of malaria, a disease that kills more than 600,000 people every year. Given the spread of insecticide resistance in natural mosquito populations, alternative vector control strategies aimed at reducing the reproductive success of mosquitoes are being promoted. Unlike many other insects, An. gambiae females mate a single time in their lives and must use sperm stored in the sperm storage organ, the spermatheca, to fertilize a lifetime's supply of eggs. Maintenance of sperm viability during storage is therefore crucial to the reproductive cap

Jasmonates are lipid-based stress hormones that are critical for the defense of plants against insects. Two naturally occurring jasmonates, jasmonic acid and methyl jasmonate, have recently been explored for their efficacy as anti-cancer agents. Furthermore, certain synthetic jasmonates (e.g., the cyclopentenone isoprostane J2) exert anti-inflammatory actions in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged murine macrophages via down-regulation of chemokines and other inflammatory mediators. Chemokines participate in the development and progression of many inflammatory disorders, such as atopic dermati

A cDNA encoding the vitellogenin receptor of the ixodid tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann (HlVgR) was cloned and characterized. The full-length cDNA is 5631 bp, including an intact ORF encoding an expected protein with 1782 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of the HlVgR cDNA revealed two ligand-binding domains with four class A cysteine-rich repeats in the first domain and eight in the second domain similar to those of insect VgRs. The immunoblot analysis detected approximately 197 kDa protein in both tick ovary and egg. The developmental expression profile demonstrated that H

Mosquitoes generate an enormous burden on human health worldwide. Disease-transmitting species use a reproductive strategy, termed anautogeny, that requires a blood meal to initiate egg maturation. Whereas this strategy is important for driving disease transmission, the molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are still poorly understood. The production of yolk protein precursors (YPPs), a central event in egg maturation, is called vitellogenesis. YPPs are synthesized in the fat body, the insect analogue of the vertebrate liver. Mosquito vitellogenesis is regulated by the steroid hormon

Many examples of reciprocal endocrine interactions between parasites and hosts have been found in insects, arthropods and mammals. Cysticercosis produced by Taenia solium metacestodes is a widely distributed parasite infection that affects the human and the pig. Taenia crassiceps experimental murine cysticercosis has been used to explore the role of biological factors involved in host-parasite interactions. We had shown that T. crassiceps cysticercosis affects the serum concentration of steroid hormones and the reproduction behavior of the male mice host. In an effort to understand the biology

Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine is widely used in Asia for childhood immunizations, but the vaccine is also used for travellers to Asia from other parts of the world. In Denmark, more than 400,000 doses have been distributed from Statens Serum Institut since 1982. In 1989, the first allergic mucocutaneous reactions after JE vaccination were registered in Denmark and, although the number of reactions have decreased since 1992, reactions are still observed. No explanation of these reactions have been found. The present case-control study, including 49 travellers with allergic reactions and 14

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Ecdysteroids are steroidal insect molting hormones that also exist in herbs. Ecdysteroid-containing adaptogens have been popularly used to improve well-being and by bodybuilders for muscle growth. However, the use of ecdysone in mammals is also associated with kidney growth and enlargement, indications of disturbed kidney homeostasis. The underlying pathogenic mechanism remains to be clarified.
METHODS: Virtual screening tools were employed to identify compounds that are homologous to ecdysone and to predict putative ecdysone-interacting proteins. The kidney effect of ecdyson

Arthropods (including insects, crustaceans, and arachnids) rely on the synthesis of chitin to complete their life cycles (Merzendorfer 2011). The highly conserved chitin synthetic process and the absence of this process in vertebrates make it an exploitable target for pest management and veterinary medicines (Merzendorfer 2013; Junquera et al. 2019). Susceptible, nontarget organisms, such as insects and aquatic invertebrates, exposed to chitin synthesis inhibitors may suffer population declines, which may have a negative impact on ecosystems and associated services. Hence, it is important to p
