Prevalence and availability of specialty dental care sites for children covered by Medicaid and CHIP in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Access to dental care is a critical aspect of children's healthcare. For these reasons, Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), administered by states, cover medically necessary services. Specialty providers can enroll and participate in state or state-contracted plans, but availability varies widely. Our research objective was to evaluate the availability of non-general dentist specialists in endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics/dentofacial orthopedics on the InsureKidsNow website for Medicaid/CHIP enrollees, on a state-by-state basis, and t

Addressing Selection and Confounding Biases in Dental Claims Data: A Causal Inference Framework for Periodontal-Systemic Disease Research.

Administrative health care data offer unique opportunities to investigate relationships between oral and systemic diseases. However, these data sources introduce methodological challenges that can compromise causal inference. This article demonstrates how, in the context of claims databases, selection bias (i.e., arising from restricting analyses to individuals with both dental and medical insurance) creates a collider structure that can distort estimates of periodontal treatment effects on systemic disease outcomes. Drawing on causal inference theory, we distinguish between confounding (resul

Associations among smoking status, including the use of cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and heated cigarettes, periodontal condition, and tooth loss in employed Japanese adults: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Information on the effects of the use of electronic cigarettes and heated cigarettes on oral health status is sparse. In addition, few studies have reported the oral health behaviours of the users of such products. We examined the associations among smoking status (including the use of cigarettes and electronic/heated cigarettes), oral health behaviours, periodontal condition, and tooth loss in employed Japanese adults. METHODS: The participants were 512 employees of 20 business offices of 19 companies that are members of the Aichi Branch of the Japan Health Insurance Association.

Pediatric Care Coordination and Oral Health Outcomes in the United States: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of 2022-23 National Survey of Children's Health.

The association between pediatric care coordination (PCC) and the prevalence of oral health problems (OHP) among children and youths in the United States was investigated. Using data from the 2022 to 23 National Survey of Children's Health for participants ≤17 years, multivariable Poisson regression models were employed to estimate the association between effective PCC and OHP (the presence of ≥1 parent-reported case of dental caries, gum bleeding, or dental pain). The study estimated the population attributable risk (PAR) to quantify the proportion of potentially avoidable OHP with effective

Survival Rate of Metal Crowns Covered by Public Health Insurance System in Japan: A Quality-of-Care Perspective.

Rather than focusing solely on cost-effectiveness and accessibility, it is also important to assess the quality of treatments available under Japan's Public Health Insurance System (PHIS). The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the survival rate of metal crowns used to replace first molars in a clinical setting. Only metal crowns made of 12% gold-silver-palladium alloy placed on first molars and available under the PHIS were included. The endpoint was removal/separation of a crown or extraction of the tooth. A total of 603 crowns fitted at 20 dental offices were investigated. Du

Periodontal disease could be a potential risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: An 11-year retrospective follow-up study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association of periodontal disease with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective follow-up study using the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort was performed from 2002 to 2015 in the Korean population. A total of 165,032 subjects were followed up for incident NAFLD during 11 years. Periodontal disease and NAFLD were defined by a diagnosis using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision (ICD-10) codes. Periodontal status was used as

[Use of fluorides and dental visits in elementary school students of the Rems-Murr district and conclusions for dental health--results of a parent survey (1993)].

After a dental examination at school a representative sample of 1244 schoolchildren in the Rems-Murr district received a questionnaire which had to be answered by their parents at home. The questions dealt with the use of fluorides and dental consultation of the children. Forty-nine per cent of the questionnaires were returned. The survey shows that fluoride supplementation by tablets enjoys an acceptance of more than 90% in early childhood, but loses much of its importance in later years. Eighty-eight per cent of the pupils brush teeth with a fluoridated dentifrice and ca. 39% of the househol

Association of preventive dental scaling with income status and changes: a population-based study.

BACKGROUNDS: Lower relative income is recognized as an important social determinant of health. Poor people are also less likely to invest in oral health due to limited resources. The aims of this study was to investigate the association of preventive dental scaling with income status and change in a large population. METHODS: This study was done on adults aged 30 years or older from January 2014 to December 2017 in the National Health Insurance System (NHIS) database. During this period, 558,067 individuals underwent health examinations, of whom 510,864 were adults aged 30 or older. The final

Designing An electronic patient record with multiple real time decision support modules for managing diseases.

Physician compliance with clinical guidelines varies between 30% and 50% despite knowledge of and acceptance of guidelines. In an attempt to improve the use of guidelines there is increasing interest in the development of clinical decision support systems. We are interested in designing a system that is intended for interdisciplinary use in primary, secondary, and tertiary level situations. Since 1995 we have been developing an electronic oral health record containing a decision support system for caries management. As the addition of different decision support modules was contemplated, the ab

Persistent oral health disparity in 12-year-old Hispanics: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is the most prevalent chronic illness worldwide. In the US dental caries has been described as a "silent epidemic", affecting 58.2 % of 12-15 year-olds, particularly in minority and immigrant groups. Caries is associated with complex yet preventable biological and behavioral factors such as dental plaque and diet, as well as social determinants of health. In developed nations, a higher risk caries has been associated with populations of low socio-economic status (SES), especially in areas with greater income disparity. An island-wide study conducted in Puerto Rico in

Policy integration of pediatric oral health: aligning medicine and dentistry for child well-being.

Oral health remains a critical yet overlooked aspect of pediatric health, despite strong evidence linking untreated dental disease with systemic complications, impaired growth, and reduced quality of life. Globally, early childhood caries and related oral conditions affect 60%-90% of children, disproportionately impacting disadvantaged groups. However, pediatric oral health is often siloed from mainstream child health services. Pediatricians, frequently the first point of contact for families, have limited oral health training, while pediatric dentists often see children only when conditions h

Pandemic-driven shift: increase in silver diamine fluoride utilization among Medicaid-enrolled children during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

INTRODUCTION: Untreated dental caries remains a significant public health issue, particularly among children and adolescents from low-income families, where disparities persist. The COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) changed dental care practices, leading to an increased focus on minimally aerosolizing treatments such as silver diamine fluoride (SDF). This study aimed to describe the temporal changes in SDF utilization among Medicaid-enrolled children across the United States before and during the first half of the COVID-19 PHE. Additionally, the study examined the impact of demographics a
