OBJECTIVE: Increased brain interferon-alpha (IFNα) is associated with neurodegenerative disorders, including HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). HAND occurs in approximately 50% of individuals with HIV despite combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of a 2-month topical interferon alpha 2b treatment in patients with refractory vernal keratoconjunctivitis.
METHODS: Twelve (10 male, 2 female) patients with refractory vernal keratoconjunctivitis received topical treatment with one million IU/mL interferon alpha 2b 4 times a day for 2 months. Symptom and ophthalmological examination scores were assessed at baseline and during follow-up.

In vitro activity of interferon-alpha-2b in combination with various antioxidants against the influenza virus and Herpes simplex was studied. The standard strains and a clinical strain of Herpes simplex isolated from a patient with resistance to acyclovir were used. Lichen nitidus is an uncommon dermatosis of unknown etiology. Here we present the case of a generalized lichen nitidus with involvement of the palms in a patient with hepatitis C after systemic treatment with interferon alpha and ribavirin. Furthermore in our patient we could show a strong lesional expression of MxA, a protein specifically induced by type I interferon. It is tempting to speculate that interferon alpha may be involved in the pathogenesis of lichen nitidus.

One prominent activity of Interferons (IFNs) is their ability to induce cell cycle arrest, and this effect has furthermore been proposed to be of major importance in mediating the clinical antitumor activity of IFNs. In several IFN sensitive established cell lines, a rapid upregulation of the cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor p21 occurs following IFN-alpha treatment, and is thought to play a major role as an effector for this phenomenon by triggering further events. The aim of this study was to investigate how these previous findings in established cells lines correlate with clinical material.

The efficacy of interferon-alpha (IFN) was reported in three patients with congenital dyserythropoietic anaemia (CDA) type I. We describe two additional cases treated with IFN, which normalized the haemoglobin level in both patients with a dramatic decrease in the size of the spleen in one. Haemoglobin remained stable more than 6 months after discontinuation of treatment.
